Posts: 1,121 Eastern NC, USA | The annual Tradewinds regatta has been designated the F16 Midwinters East. All US East coast F16s should consider this a "must attend" event. More info can be found on the CatSailor homepage.
Can any South Florida sailors comment on the location, sailing conditions, etc.?

Posts: 2,718 St Petersburg FL | Can any South Florida sailors comment on the location, sailing conditions, etc.? One word Perfect. But in all honesty, last two tradewinds, the wind was howling. 20+kts and it has been cold. Wind temps in the mid 50s. The venue is excellent. They have a huge pool, showers, restrooms everything you need for a good weekend sailing event. The hotels close by are pretty good, but you will find better for the same price in other locations. That is a plague that occurs down in the FL keys. I dont mind it, because I only need a bed to sleep in. The water is crystal clear, depth is around 10 to 12 ft so do not worry about waves or going turtle. Getting down there can be crazy driving through South FL. If you are driving down via I-95 I recomend getting on the FL turnpike just before West Palm beach and if you are comming down via I-75 get on the turnpike just after the Miramar Pkwy extit. If not, you will be stuck in mad-crazy traffic. Any questions you can contact me via pm or reply here. I will try my best to help out. | | | Re: F16 Midwinters East - US

Posts: 5,558 Key Largo, FL & Put-in-Bay, OH... | Actually, the water depth is more like 8 feet, about the same as Blackwater Sound. The Founders Park property was originally 55 acres before they added additional acreage to the north.
I don't know about the beach being small. We have had more than 100 boats on it for past Tradewinds Regattas. It is one of the most beautiful beaches anywhere in the Keys. Maybe you didn't see it when you were down there for the seminar, because we were over on the far other side of the property.
The beach is in a cove, so it is usually nice calm water for launching. It's an awesome location, as some will remember from long past Tradewinds Regattas and seminars.
And as far as motels, we are hoping that everybody will choose motels that are in Islamorada, since that is the Tourist Development Council district from which we received funding to advertise Tradewinds. It is important to impress them with the business the event brings to that area.
There are lots of motels within three miles north and south of Founders Park (Mile Marker 87). Closest are Lookout Lodge, Islamorada Motel, and Conch-on-Inn. Holiday Isle is two or three miles south, and Harbor Lights and Coconut Cove.....complete list from the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce. Link is at the NOR.
In plenty of time before the regatta I will make a diagram of Founders Park, showing where to rig and where to put trailers, etc., and will have it with the NOR and also posted on this forum.

Posts: 5,558 Key Largo, FL & Put-in-Bay, OH... | Okay, here you are -- I think these are all the closest ones. There are lots more a mile farther down the road. Don't rely on the rates that I have on some of them, because they are from last April. Islamorada Motel (Closest) 87760 Overseas Highway (Mile Marker 87.76, bay side) Phone: 305-852-9376 They have a total of 13 rooms, 5 large and 6 small. Rates: Small room, one queensize bed -- $79 Large room, two beds and kitchen -- $99 Web site: www.islamoradamotel.comLookout Lodge (Next Closest) (On the same water as the regatta) 87770 Overseas Highway (Mile Marker 87.77, bay side) Phone: 305-852-9915 They have a total of 10 rooms Rate range: $139-$350 Web site: www.lookoutlodge.com Conch-on-Inn (third closest) Corner of U.S. 1 and Caloosa St. (Mile Marker 89.5, bay side) Phone: 305-852-9309 They have a total of 8 rooms Rates: One queen bed -- $89 Two double beds -- $99 I think all the rooms have frig. and microwave. Web site: www.conchoninn.com. Holiday Isle Resorts Mile Marker 84 (just 3 miles south of Founders Park) Phone: 305-664-2321 They have five hotels on the property, all with different names. You call that same number for all of them and pick the one you want. They all have different price ranges. If you want a peaceful one, get one of the motels farthest north on the property (closer to Founders Park). If you want to be where all the action is, you might want the Tower Building (also called the Horizon) or the next motel north of that. They are the closest to the Tiki Bar, which is far better than the one at Gilbert’s. Holiday Isle also has restaurants on the premises and I think food at the Tiki Bar, too. Holiday Isle is the big “hot spot” between Miami and Key West. Web site: www.holidayisle.comFor more motels, go to the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce: http://www.islamoradachamber.com/lodging.cfm

Posts: 1,121 Eastern NC, USA | 5 F16s pre-registered. I hope that a fleet of 10 is a possibility. Just over a month to go. You can check the pre-registered boats by entering the registration site.
Is there a hotel that is preferred by the F16 crowd? I am looking to book asap, but want to make sure I am in "good" company.

Posts: 1,121 Eastern NC, USA | **** around about it.
I assume matt/GINA, THE Chuck, maybe Seth others....does anyone need some coaxing? Talk to me.
I'd like for my 900 mile (one way) excursion to be well worth it. I don't mind chasing you guys around the course, but let us see what we have (since we have no BIG NAME SAILORS IN THE FLEET and F16 IS ONLY A FAD).
900 miles maybe inconsequential to the trip I am going to take to the Pacific Coast Champs in June. ROAD TRIP! Maybe Robi wants to coordinate a container of F16 to the CA venue. I know he loves to talk shipping!!!

IS renting an RV an option? we need a big trailer where we can fit four to five boats. I am sure if I go, Pete and Terry would go as well, seing how we are in FL and we usually hang out with eachother. Now Matt, The Chuck and Seth, well they are hard to track down for some odd reason. ROAD TRIP!I got 50 days I can burn off, plus by then I will have around 15 extra days Robi wants to coordinate a container of F16 to the CA venue. California in June? I will try very hard! Need to start working on the logistics now. I would imagine Debbie will come with me for that one. Seth has a brand-new baby, so he's probably out. Matt has a business to run, doubt he would make a road trip. Don't know about Chuck. Probably you, Terry and me are all we can count on to drive. Of course Terry has business obligations as well.
How much time are you willing to spend on this?
It looks like a scheduling conflict with Daytona. Hopefully we can work around it.

Oh and its NOT Chuck, every sailor in FL, knows that when we address "Chuck" we address him as THE CHUCK. | | | Re: F16 Midwinters East - US
