Eagle 20!

Eagle 20! - 10/09/06 04:43 AM

Everyone, have a look at this website: www.eagle-cat.com. They are undoubtedly the fastest one design sailboats in the world

Isn't the Eagle 20 a beautiful boat?

Very nice boats but 'undoubtedly' ????

The M20 whilst the numbers show otherwise, has yet to proove itself against the Tornado. The Eagle 20 likewise.

Absolutely beautiful, but I can't imagine what one will cost out the door (in the US) by the time you get the spi kit, trailer, etc...

Very impressive though!

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me, the Eagle 20 is ugly. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

I noticed the F18 hull design on their website. Looks interesting. Any reviews on the design yet?

Re: Eagle 20! - 10/09/06 03:22 PM

I think "interesting" is a polite way of expressing it. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Anyone with more than a "Hydrodynamics 101" course who can say more about the theorethical advantages of the design? It looks very "wrong" if you are after a fast boat.

Re: Eagle 20! - 10/09/06 04:30 PM

wow...that is an interesting design. I'm not sure about "wrong" though. Obviously, they are trying to achieve a hull that will plane but with some rocker in it to handle chop. I can't imagine the price on the thing though.

The daggerboard wells appear to be pretty far forward from the current line of designs and the shrouds are WAY forward.

Re: Eagle 20! - 10/09/06 04:48 PM

another upside-down cat.

As a side note, I was on Lake Lanier this weekend doing foredeck on a J29, and there were two a-cats rocketting around in the light air amongst all the lead-sleds.

They were definitely the topic of discussion on the boat before the start, as some of the guys were curious as to how they were moving so fast.

My response was that "when you can pick the boat up on your back and carry it to the beach, it doesn't take much umph to make it go."

Then they proceeded to tell me that the VWM XJ looked "upside down"

Everyone wanted one though.

Erez,

No idea what that says, but I was also thinking the F18 hull looks very similar to the A2. From what I understand, the A2 is quite a performer and is no more prone to sticking the bows than any other current design.

The bottom shape of the boat looks similar to the new A-Class design, "The Tool". It is a u-shape rather than a semi-circular shape which has been the standard underwater shape for the last 15 years in the A-class. The goal is try to get a planing shape to work that is still low drag in lighter air. I think the jury is still out.

Pete Melvin brought a new A2 to the NA's in Bristol that had forward beam, daggerboard wells, and shrouds moved further aft. We really did not see any performance difference (positive or negative) in the light to moderate air of the event and Lars Guck was obviously not slow on the older A2 design. The placement of shrouds and daggerboards on the Nikita F-18 looks similar to the A2 but I believe it's hard to tell in a photo like this in a comparative sense to other boats.

Well, I can't read my post also <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
how ever the boat in the pics is not A2,
It is A class boat designed by the same designer of the Nikita [Linked Image]

Re: Eagle 20! - 10/09/06 10:57 PM

Are they manufacturing them or just testing at the moment? Is their pricing going to be more in line with their Eagle or will it be competitive with other F18s? Does it have a measurement certificate? (that pole doesn't look legal - could be the camera perspective).

Re: Eagle 20! - 10/10/06 12:10 AM

There are no measurement stickers on the sails.

It does appear to feature something I've been an advocate of for a while, a track for the kite sheet, to allow you to adjust sheeting angle independently of the luff tension.

Re: Eagle 20! - 10/10/06 08:19 AM

Nils Bunkenburg also designed the Hobie FX-One and Fox,
so is this what the new Tiger would look like if they hired him again?

Re: Eagle 20! - 10/10/06 08:31 AM

Hobie first has to pay Nils for the work he has done for them in the past.

Re: Eagle 20! - 10/10/06 12:36 PM

are you saying that he's still waiting on a check from Hobie for his previous designs?
Posted By: Wouter

Re: Eagle 20! - 10/10/06 01:05 PM

I guess I'm saying here that on the info that I have, Nils wouldn't even consider for one sec designing the new Hobie Tiger for Hobie. Experiences gained during previous projects sort of left a really bad taste in one particular designers mouth. Hobie refers to Hobie France in this respect.

That is all.

Don't ask for proof or names as I won't give you those. I will need these sources in the future and I'm not going to offend them by exposing them.

Wow, a scenario where wout WONT talk.

Never thought I'd see the day.

Re: Eagle 20! - 10/10/06 04:15 PM

Actually you did already see that day pass before.

It was when the first nacra infusions were shipped into Europe.

Same principle was applied then as well. Different sources but I kept them confidential just the same.

Is the Tornado faster than the Inter 20?
Posted By: Mark Schneider

Re: Eagle 20! - 10/10/06 10:07 PM

My assertion,

Anything over 12 knotts ... yes

the Inter is faster in breeze where it can fly a hull and the Tornado can't. Then they are even up till the point where the Inter starts to depower to stay upright... the Tornado just flattens the rig and goes while using the extra beam to stay upright.

Macca's Taipain super 5.7 should be faster with the long boards and less weight and now wider beam then both.

All this considering equal teams on the boat.

Re: Eagle 20! - 10/11/06 06:04 PM

Macca's super Taipan uses standard boards, besides the wider beam and new rig, only the rudders have been modified. He also says it's way faster than the T in any condition. And regarding Macca's experience with the Tornado (he has done several Tornado worlds with respectable results), I believe him..

I think a Tornado sailed by a class competitive team is faster than an Inter 20 in any condition. A Tornado with this calibre crew and the very latest rigging and tuning is a very, very refined and potent yacht.

Re: Eagle 20! - 10/12/06 12:11 AM

Hi Bob

The last two cat fights are good data. The Tornado and Inter 20's were sailed by comprable teams in those races. Matching the guys on the US Sailng Team against the Weekend warriers is probably not fair to compare the boats. Certainly given a choise... you take the Tornado!

BTW... do you have any pictures of the A cat mast positive rotation system you have written about?

Thanks
Mark
