Cat Name - 01/15/02 03:34 PM

We are trying to name our Prindle 16, which my wife and I sail for fun and relaxation on Sarasota Bay in Florida. Any suggestions would be welcome. (We have a few of our own, like Duet, Miata, etc.)

Thanks,

Andrew

my H16 was "Twin Screw" (I have some powerboat blood in my veins). all boats since have been "boat".

I personally like one I saw on the internet not too long ago:

Re: Cat Name - 01/16/02 02:03 AM

On of my favorites on Lake Champlain is called "A Meeting". (Whenever its owner needs some time away from the office, he tells his co-workers that he's "at a meeting".)

Hi Kevin, There are many names in this category. Like "Assignment", as "I'll be out on assignment today". There are some websites for boat name but I do not remember the addresses. Try a web search and you will find lots of ideas.

The name that Rick Bliss has on the side of his N6.0 is a good one, too - "Follow the Yellow 6.0"

Re: Cat Name - 01/16/02 03:17 PM

I forgot to mention that we named our first Mystere 6.0 "Dances With Waves" because we bought it right after the movie Dances With Wolves came out. We had graphics made up so that the name was done in the same colors as the boat decals and with a font that made the name sort of resemble waves. It was really eye catching and we had lots of nice comments about it. Then one evening during our local club's race, we had a monster storm come roaring through and wreak havoc. Dances With Waves suddenly Tumbled In Storms and was written off after smashing up on rocks after we were rescued by the Coast Guard. My only insurance claim in 26 years of buying boat insurance but it paid back all those premiums! NOOA weather radio issues high wind warnings at appropriate times where they urge operators of high profile vehicles to consider staying off the roads. So the new Mystere was named 'High Profile Vehicle" to remind us of what happened. Interestingly, we had watched the 6 P.M. T.V. news weather report immediately before launching as we live on the bay and the race area is close enough to sail to for the 7 P.M. start. Not a word was mentioned about this storm - it took a giant right turn down the eastern shore of lake Michigan just to give us a whole new experience. The storm traveled at 50 mph and had winds as high as 82 mph. Not the recommended way to get a new boat or a new name!

Andrew-

Definitely take your time and the "right" name will come to you all. Sometimes you can incorporate part of the boat, or your own name, in a "play on words" (my Taipan 4.9 is named "My Tai") or pick a name that describes you (or the boat) in some way- My late Father's last boat was named "Folie a Deux" which is psychiatric lingo (he was a psychoanalyst by trade) for the situation where 2 people go crazy together ;-)

Enjoy!

If you like foreign languages, you can simply translate cat into something else. In Spanish (and other latin languages), for example:

Cat = Gato

Tiger = Tigre

Panther = Pantera

My old H16 - "Allez Cat" ('allez' is 'you go' in French)

Friend's yelo VIVA 27' - "Morris"

My 18sq - "Vileine" (means 'ugly' in French)

Other boats I've seen: "Nice Pair", "E Aho La'ula" (from the TV ad, 'wider is better'), "2 Kewl" "Et Two Brute" "Deuced"

Re: Cat Name - 01/18/02 07:11 PM

I do think boats should be named. Some would disagree, especially the smaller boats. They each have their own personality and quirks. It is important to be comfortable and cats when sailed well truly become an extension of your body. It also inspires a higher level of ownership and pride.

My first catamaran was named “Hotspur”. The “spur” gives it a little piece of Texas, however the name was taken from the book “Hornblower and the Hotspur” by CS Forrester. The book is number three in a 10 + series of naval fiction set in the late 1700’s. Yep, when British canvass, wood, gunpowder and cannon balls ruled the sea! This is Hornblower’s first command and HMS "Hotspur" becomes part of the Channel Fleet, blockading the French fleet based at Brest. The routine of life on blockade duty is broken by furious North Atlantic gales. "Hotspur" is a sloop of war and although smaller, slower and outgunned by virtually every other warship, she is able to defeat a French frigate with better boat handling and tactics and uses her strengths to stage daring raids on the French coast.

I tried for a long time to come up with the perfect name, and nothing was just right. Then without trying so hard, "Hotspur" just came and I knew it was right. No name for the new cat yet. Get the book and read it. No doubt my favorite in the series.

Thank you for all your imaginative suggestions for naming our cat; we appreciate your help. Alas, we have not selected one yet, but have thought of DUET, KITTY, ZIPPY, KATZ (cat in German), and WINGS. In the meantime, we enjoy passing almost all of the monohulls on Sarasota Bay, including the fast Flying Scots. Only the E-Scows seem to keep up with us. So our little blue and white Prindle 16 is a sweet cat, though still nameless.

Thank you for all your suggestions, many of them very clever and some truly amusing. No wonder some of your responses have made it into the CATAMARAN SAILOR magazine. The final, final name we have arrived at is PURRARI, combining a catlike behavior with the speed of a Ferrari. So the tempest in a teapot is probably over -- and it has been great fun.

My old Hobvie 16 (sail # 4032, so it was an OLD one) I named "Beach Bum" since I left it on the causeway all the time. My G-Cat 5.7M I've named "Nerito" which is Latin for "Sea Nymph" which is a mermaid. I've got the graphics all set up on the computer, just have to take them to the shop and have them done in vinyl to put on the boat after painting it.

I almost named it "Chester the Cat" after the cat in Alice in Wonderland...

My friend's P18-2 has a name for each hull. One is "Sex Sea" and the other "Teddy Time".

NACRA 5.8s tend to have aggressive names. I chose "WET SPOT" when I had a 5.8. My current boat, NACRA 5.5 is called "TWO HOT". Notice the short names - turns out that the nice vinyl letters cost a lot of money - fewer the letters, cheaper the naming exercise turns out.

One of my all-time favorites was a P18-2 from Dallas, "Catillac", the couple had finally moved up from their humble P16.

Re: Cat Name - 11/29/02 02:20 PM

I use to have a Dolphin and then Nacra 5.8 both named THE PREDATOR and sported a sharks mouth (Kittyhawk airoplane style) on its bows with gills and fins. Looked awsome cutting through the water.

Would love to name my Tornado that but have gone for a name that is a little more subtle for the sponnsors. We have named it ALIVE (that's how we feel when we are on it)

Some names that I have like and laughed at are-

Gets ya wet, Dry Reach, Rampaging Muppet, Rhino Juice, The Big Don't Argue, Accidently on Purpose, Bad Medicine, Beatz Workin, Sir Pshyco, Xisbitter (Ex is bitter - because you kept the boat in the seperation), Rum Needs Ice, Appatite for Destruction.

Can keep going all night

Ok.... I'll put in this one:
Our H-16 59650 is bright Awlgrip yellow, so her name is: ~ B'NANA SPLIT ~(placed on the bows)~ The reason for the {'} rather than an A was because we were being frugal and could only find 4 A's per 18 dollar package of multicolor letters at West Marine. Still searching for appropriate decals to place along the hulls near the helm position with which to signify her "wins" at the races. Kinda like the fighter pilots did in yesteryear with their **** access area.

As long as we're still dragging this topic through the snow, maybe someone can help w/my decision...i'm currently torn between :

A: Sunscream
B: SUPERCATifragilisticexpialFEROCIOUS

Being that she is a 17 S/C, i'm leaning toward "B", but i'm afraid that by the time i make the letters big enough to read, i'll need a bigger boat. (and i'll confess, i plagiarized it from the orig. '83 factory brochure)

Re: Cat Name - 12/03/02 05:50 PM

I know you have already chosen a name for your cat, but I was just wondering, does your screen name (VeniceSailor) mean you have some connection with Venice or Italy? If so, I would have thought you'd go for a cat name with an Italian/Venician flavour, like:

(Il) Gondola di Gatto....(The) Gondola Cat
(Le) Gondole Gemelle...Twin Gondolas OR
(I) Gemelli di Gondola...(The) Gondola Twins (not sure of plural)
Due Gondole...Two Gondolas
(Lo) Specchio di Gondola...(The) Gondola Mirror
(La) Gondola Riflettuta...(The) Reflected Gondola

(You'll have to pardon my Italian if it's not perfect, as I do not speak it, just English & some Spanish). If you (or anyone) felt like using one of these, please check out spelling, grammar, etc. first!!

Re: Cat Name - 03/28/03 05:00 PM

I just thought it was time to bring this boat name thread back into action, since the new season is almost upon us, and it is time to think about putting a name on your boat and christening her before she splashes in for the first time this year.

If your boat is more than just a piece of equipment, if she is a part of your family and your life, you should give her a name.

And I read somewhere recently that boats, like hurricanes, are no longer considered to be only female, so that also gives a greater potential range of names, although it is hard to imagine a boat named George.

Does anybody have any new name suggestions?

There was an Australian cat named:
" [color:"red"] LIGHT BLUE TOUCH PAPER AND GET AWAY" (a warning printed on fireworks)

Re: Cat Name - 10/09/03 02:25 AM

My first Hobie 18 was "Cat Nap", and after I switched to custom black sails they became "Black Magic", "Merlin", "Black Cat", "Magus", and then "Trident" after my companies. My Hobie 14T's were "Yeller Cat" and "Blue Cat", and my Hobie 17 was "Slo Cat". My 35' twin screw is named "Hakuna Mutata" by my kids after the Lion King "No Worries" theme. My current Taipan 4.9 is yet unnamed, but I'm leaning to "The Shadow."

Say Andrew, let's get some cats into the Sarasota Sailing Squadron racing series. There are a gazillion cats stored up there but none of them look like they've been in the water for years. I sail regularly off the beach in front of my house here on Casey Key Island just north of the Venice Jetty. Can't miss my black sails. I went out this past weekend and lapped the monohulls in their distance regatta.

I really like 'Blow Me' too but Bonnie would never let me go out in public with that on my boat

I'm still quite happy with my "Flippen Fearless" too. However, I've learned that it is bad luck to name two boats the same thing. My N5.2 was named "Flippen Fearless" and I never once capsized that boat during a regatta (only on occasion when really pushing it while out recreationally). Once I named my new 6.0NA the same thing, I capsized in nearly every regatta I entered at least once per weekend. I have since appended the name with "again!?" and haven't capsized since. (knock on wood).

My former Tornado was called "Disaster Area". My current boat is "DoubleMint" since it has dark green/minty decks. I've got a Marstrom on it's way and I'm starting to think of a name for it. So far I've got "Full Tilt", "Twister", "Snuffleluffagus" (a reference to the spinny snuffer), or since Tuesday, "Terminator" refering to Arnold S.'s win here in CA.

Other names I've seen on cats over the years:
"Psych Job" on an 18SX owned by a psychologist.
"Shear Force" on a T-boat.
"Peppermint Catty" on a light green T-boat.
"Panty Buncher" a T-boat once owned by the daughter of a former Tornado Builder in Canada (SailCraft).
"No More Mister Nice Guy" on a T-boat in Toronto.
"Katamoorangmaroo" on a T-boat.
"Great White" on a T-boat
"Blew Job" on a blue T-boat.

"Kat Scratch Fever" is too cliche'
"2 fast" is probably over-used

maybe "I got your room at the mark" ???

Resurrecting this old thread...

While in Monterey I saw this fishing boat hauling out…named “FILLET SHOW”.

I passed it off as some fisherman thing until I spoke the name out loud. I chuckled and pointed it out to my wife who laughed. My teenage daughter stared at it for quite a while and then got REALLY embarrassed when she finally figured it out. Her idiot pizza-faced boyfriend kept saying loudly “I don’t get it…FILLET SHOW, FILLET SHOW”??? I saw my daughter jab him in the ribs and tell him to shut up, she'd explain later. I pushed him off the pier.

A friend had a fishing boat around the Chesapeake Bay area called "The Crack of Dawn". We tried for years to get him to admit that he had actually searched for a girlfriend (he finally found a year AFTER naming the boat) whose name was.........DAWN. Ended up marrying her and never changed the name of the boat.

Bullswan,
You just gave me a great idea for a name for my Wave, "Lady on the Tramp."

It's a lot better than the name that came with a Laser I bought a long time ago. It was "Yssup Tew." You figure it out.
Posted By: bullswan

Re: Cat Name - 07/31/05 01:27 PM

Mary, I am sooo glad you took it the way it was intended. I thought it was pretty clever so I passed it on to you.My nine year old son actually came up with it. I can't take the credit.
I also have to confess that I don't get the previous name for your laser, but I'm not through working on it! Probably be muttering it to myself over and over all day.
Good sailing.

Re: Cat Name - 07/31/05 01:55 PM

Greg,
The clue is that Lasers spend a lot of time upside down, so look at the name from that perspective. Please remember that I did not give it the name -- it came with the boat.

Re: Cat Name - 07/31/05 02:01 PM

Maybe writing it as "yssuP teW" gives you a clue...

I was thinking about a different name for Port and Starboard, maybe some smart remark like "Give way!" on one side and "Problem?" on the other. (Will take suggestions!)

This is also a cool idea, it translates to Watermirror...

Okay. Got it. Duhhh.

I kept getting stuck with "tew" being a cutesy way of spelling two. Or II. Upside down worked out to "met dnssh" by the way, Mary.

I definitely think "Lady on a tramp" would be a step-up!

here's a funny - 08/01/05 02:03 PM

At the 2001 Ruff Rider, the logistics boat was a shrimp boat named 'WIDE LOAD'

Asked the skipper about the name. He said that the boat had been hauled about on land for years, never finished out until he bought it (and then not terribly finished). so when he bought the boat, it had its towing banner across it... WIDE LOAD. He figured the boat'd had that name for so long, he wasn't gonna change it.

Not a bad name for a cat.

Took some people off the beach for an introductory ride to the world of catamarans and when the wind hit the sails and we took off the guy said, "God, that was like a controlled explosion!"

Re: here's a funny - 08/01/05 04:08 PM

Well, I know this might be traditionalist and sentimental and not very creative, but my father named all his sailboats for his two daughters -- Mary-Bet. At least it made us kids feel involved and important and part of it all.

My sister and her husband named their catamarans "Mush Monk," which were based upon nicknames for their children.

And, guess what, all four of those kids (Mary, Bet, Mush and Monk) are sailors.

We had a NACRA 6.0 that was named that (not backwards, but forwards) in deference to it being a cat and a boat that gets wet.

Of course, after calling the Tuesday results out in the bar by boat name a handful of times (the score-keeper NOT being the squeamish type) the name was changed to "Liquid Courage"...

Re: Cat Name & Mascots - 08/02/05 11:16 AM

In our club we have:

Lickalotapuss - which can only refer to beating other cats (sailed by ex Dart 18 World Champ);
Eat My Kittywake - another sailor determined to be in front!
And my favourite is Jammy Dodger for a red Dart 18 with a white waterline stripe.
Visitors have included Hullraiser and Scorched Cat.

My Spitfire was already named White Tiger (the previous owner names his boats after rare cats - appropriate in my corner of the UK). I stuck with it partly through superstition about changing boat names, and because I quite liked it. I like it a lot better now that a friend (and sailing rival) rescued a fluffy toy white tiger from his daughter's donation to the jumble. It now sits astride my spinni pole and is often the first to cross the line! (This will please Wouter - his scalps inculde various F18s and Nacra 6, all rated as faster than the Spitti, a grandfathered F16.)

To change the theme a bit, does anyone else have a mascot on board?

Wait a minute!!!! If dolphins are the smart ones why do WE have the sailboats? Hmmmm? Answer that.

Also I don't think 42 is the answer. Wouldn't it have to be a prime number?

Finally, I think women rule the world...... Think of all the stupid things you have done (or will do) just to get a piece. My father-in-law with 3 blonde ex-wives taught me this.....

Re: Cat Name - 08/02/05 01:17 PM

To get a little bit back on topic -- on the F16 forum somebody apparently wants the number 666 for his Blade. This was my response:

What is in a name, or in this case a number?

I would not tempt fate by asking for a number like 666. I tend to be somewhat superstitious about boat names and numbers.

Rick and a bunch of people on his boat were rescued once in the Gulf Stream by a freighter named "Kindly." (Good name.)

A big monohull sailboat that we were hired to maintain for a while was named "Incorrigible." The wife of the original owner of the boat died of cancer. And the wife of the current owner (at the time we were involved) also died of cancer. (Bad name. The second owner should have changed the name to something less aggressive sounding. Boats are supposed to be female in gender.)

A young sailor (college student) drowned when trapped under a Hobie 16 named "Wet Screams." We were there in Vancouver, BC when it happened. The next day when I saw the name on the boat, it really freaked me out.

After that I decided it is very important to be careful what you wish for when you name a boat.
Posted By: Keith

Re: Cat Name - 08/02/05 03:02 PM

To tempt fate or embrace it - a ways back a sailor named Phil Weld was capsized while sailing his Newick-designed trimaran "Gulf Streamer" - it happened in the Gulf Stream when the boat was hit by a rogue wave. His next Newick tri to replace it was named "Rogue Wave".

Re: Cat Name - 08/02/05 04:00 PM

Well the mice own the planet, they commisioned it, bought and paid for, so I just automatically put them in charge. As to why we have sailboats and dolphins don't, I think its just so that have somethign that makes wakes for them to play in.

so I'm on topic how about "Puss 'n Chutes"

In Greek mythology, the Argonauts (ancient Greek) were a band of heroes who, in the years before the Trojan War, accompanied Jason to Colchis in his quest for the Golden Fleece. Their name comes from their ship, the [color:"red"] Argo which in turn was named after its builder Argus . They were sometimes called Minyans, after a prehistoric tribe of the area.

I just named my new Nacra 5.2, it was officially christened today. Bottle of Champange and everything. Granted we didn't break the bottle and didn't launch her right then but we drank the champange while sitting on the tramp in the freezing cold.

She is officially named "Elsies". This is named after the girl that I have talked about, I couldb't name it directly after her but her intials are LCS, so if you sound out the name it sounds like her intials. That was part of her B-day present! She really liked it!
