P-19 roller furling and jib halyard conversion

I'm planning on adding roller furling to my P-19, and due to the pain in the *** jib halyard system on the Prindles, I was wondering if anyone has changed over to either the Hobie 18 type or the Nacra type halyard system when adding jib furling? Any problems doing that? Murrays has kits available for all three types, and it would seem to be the time to do the change, if I'm going to do be adding new hardware anyway. I'd love to do away with that hook and ring system, if I can.

If you add a roller furling system, you have to eliminate the s hook and ring system and add a swivel instead of the upper forestay, and then add the H-18 halyard system. You also may have to shorten the forestay after you have added the swivel at the top and roller furler drum at the bottom.

I used a TheMightyHobie18 roller furling and had to change the bridle wires and the upper forestay which had to be a tad shorter. To this last one you must insert the swivel. I did this myself using West marine equipment and leftover wire from a stay. I can tell you taht next time I'll have it done professionally. Getting the wire to bend in the thimbles was a pain. I like the new system as I couldnt stand the noise of the jib flapping when reigging/derigging the boat. Let me know if you need any additional info.

Thanks, guys. I'm considering having Murrays put the whole thing together for me, as they offer two Hobie kits, one of which includes the entire halyard setup, which may be aimed at people like me. Ferminj, did you have to shorten the bridle wires, or change them completely? That's something that's not included in the kit, so will cost extra. I know what you mean about the flapping - drives me nuts, and now I've moved my boat to a mast-up storage yard with concrete launch ramp (no more beach), so I'm pretty sure that furling is almost a necessity.

I got a system like what Murray's sells for the Hobie with the bridle pole and the 18" track and the Hexarachet blocks, then had a custom reacher cut. It is 78 sq ft. The boat FLYS. Let me know if you have any questions?

Doug, you really got a reacher put on your H17? When did that happen? How come you haven't mentioned that before?

I used the Murrays P-19 "kit" works great. Keeps the hook and ring, but if you are going to leave the mast up and the jib on, then there is no problem.

I'm glad to hear that the P19 kit also works, especially as it would run me about $150 less, when all is said and done. The hook and ring isn't impossible to use, of course, but there was that one time when the only way I could get the jib down was by lowering the mast.

My reacher has a zipper. Forestay has a pulley that pulls the reacher up. There is a wire forestay. Some of the old jibs had a built in forestay, zipper is better.

I have the MX sails. I altered the typical ring setup to one that allows me to adjust the luff tension while under sail. In addition to a sheave up top on the pigtail I added one at the bottom where the forestay meets the jib-pole. From there the jib halyard goes thru a 3:1 purchase before going to a jam cleat on the main beam. The line that goes to the main beam is separate from the excess line that is leftover after the jib has been raised. I connect these with tiny shackles that require a slotted screwdriver to tighten and loosen. You have to have a steady hand if it's blowing when you are trying to set sail. Otherwise it works great. I'll send photos when I get my boat rigged this month if you are interested. Greg

I'd be interested. My P19 had the jib pole setup for the MX jib when I bought it in November, but the boat only came with the standard jib, so I simply removed the poles. I've still got them, and can put them back on in 5 minutes or so. Your system sounds great, and I'm thinking there probably is a way to do something similar with the standard jib and furler, although the furler adds an extra complication to the mix.

Peter,I replaced the bridle wires and the pigtail. The bridle wire lenght did not change, the pigtail was shortened as indicated by others here. I can use the new bridle wires with the old setup if I figure a way to attach them to the forestay. Let me know if you need pics. I am now trying to rig a spinnaker....
