Steady 20 knots from the east here in Cocoa Beach. Looking kinda nasty out there.

Good Tiger weather.

Sunday its forcast out of the west, which will be a reach both ways to the light and back.

Sunday its out of the NE, 17 gusting to 32. One big beat up the beach. eeeyuck.

These forcasts are more than 5 days out though, so are subject to change.

If that big low doesn't move to the north east, it's going to be ugly just getting through the surf!

Re: Tybee - Its getting interesting - 05/08/07 02:21 PM

Are they going to let discretion be the better part of valor in cases like that, or will we see another Worrell/ Jensen Beach debacle?

I don't see what all that broken equipment proves, other than beach cats aren't designed for light onshore wind with huge surf.

I'm not sure anyone can design a mast capable of withstanding being stuck in the sand while a 6 foot wave hits the boat. Does this make the boat "fragile" or "undependable"?

Are we testing the crash-worthiness of the boat, or the skill of the sailor?

Re: Tybee - Its getting interesting - 05/08/07 02:50 PM

that's enough of that kind of talk.

Re: Tybee - Its getting interesting - 05/08/07 02:58 PM

Yeah really.

You're making me actually happy that I pay my insurance payments on time.

I was looking at the accuweather forcasts. Sunday its out of the west, so the wave action shouldn't be that bad.

Monday out of the NE, which could be hairy, but there's usually a small shoal about 100 yards off the Hollywood beach that causes the bigun's to break after you can get a bit of reaching speed.

It looks like NE again off the beach for Jupiter, which is one of the stops that can get hairy - steep beach with a big rock in the middle of the line. (The tiki bar the night before doesn't help either)

Your gonna be just fine for the race. The waves are smacking the boats around a bit here in Delray today so if your not tied down say Bye Bye .There is a P19 on top of a hobie so far.High tide is at noon "so take em away Johnny"!

If anyone's gonna return that boat in one piece, it'd be Misha.

I'd think that the race organizers learned their lesson from years past, and would leave the extreme sailing conditions to those with bigger egos than brains.

Now I know why you guys sail those light boats.

You just want to be on top when the fit hits the shan.

Re: Tybee - Its getting interesting - 05/08/07 04:30 PM

Vs the high risk 'le mans' off the beach start. (or even cancellation)
How about using a jet ski to get cats through the surf?
Then set a starting line just out side of the surf line.

Re: Tybee - Its getting interesting - 05/08/07 04:35 PM

Are you going to get a jet ski to get them back in?

Re: Tybee - Its getting interesting - 05/08/07 05:15 PM

I'm not so sure you would need a boat to come back in, anyway, I never have had that problem, maybe someone else has?

Generally, it is much easier coming back in, as one has the momentum vs lack of when going against the waves (going out).
Although, a skipper has to have the enough common sense/skill not to overrun the crest when coming in, to prevent going over the falls.

Re: Tybee - Its getting interesting - 05/08/07 05:32 PM

Good thing it is not a 1000 mile race with it going around OBX. Conditions yesterday were nuclear. 34' seas and 60 mph winds. The coast guard had their hands full. http://www.newsobserver.com/856/story/571940.html
I understand they are still searching for a missing sailboat.

No kidding. Anyone that thinks Florida is rough this time of year should take a little trip up north.

Well they don't call it Cape Fear for nothing!

Hey, I can see my house from here...about a half inch below the FL in the middle of the state!

This morning the Orlando weather man said, "The low will continue to move to the south west and they are sending hurrican hunter aircraft in today, to keep an eye on it..." I hope it drifts off to the east soon. They had some major waves crashing over the jetty in Palm Beach!

naaaahh...that thing will be long gone. (I hope).

Re: Tybee - Its getting interesting - 05/09/07 02:08 PM

I agree with Jake. It will have moved onshore by Friday, and with that will come a shift to WSW and S winds for FL, which should make the first few legs a sleigh ride (at least keep the sea flat near shore).

Apparently, this race is "brainless"

I've unleashed my nasty fingers.

You do have an affinity for the "f" word, don't you.?

I'd be tempted to try that Everglades challenge, but two stops have bridges with clearance less than 10 feet, which would require dismantling of the mast to get through (so low you can't even flip the boat and swim under)...

Other thought for distance was Marco Island to Long Key (across Florida Bay), but that's a long way away from land if something goes wrong....

Don't worry Wouter says the same thing, but he takes a couple of pages to say it. You two are more alike than you know.
