Thanks for everything

Re: nacra 5.2 finally done - 05/09/07 12:03 AM

looks nice. What all did you do to it?

Also, your hulls look very shiney in the first picture... what's it coated with?
And I need to get one of those nacra decals you and Kris have... they look great. How much are they?

Re: nacra 5.2 finally done - 05/09/07 12:19 AM

Well I replaced all the rigging, new tramp, new jib, all new lines, added the barber hauler, removed the center bar, repaired and regelcoated the dagger boards, rudders, and the hulls, new bearings in the traveler, new end caps, all kinds of new hardware, rebuilt the outhaul on the boom, replaced all the trap lines and handles and bungees, changed the rudder system so I have no bungee, I just have a line to pull up with and to pull down with, new hinge pins for the rudder, new tiller bar connections and an adjuster to align the rudders and of course new stickers.

On the trailer I have new bearings, new wiring, new lights, and new weels and tires(not pictured) and new bearing buddies.

I got the decals from the cat house.

Bring your boat down and race Wayward Winds. Friend Kris has a nice one he is going to race and there will be a 5.0 and maybe a 5.5 there. Here is Kris's boat.

Ya the boat does look grat.
I know the decal was from cathouse, but how much did you pay for it?

Also, how hard was it to regelcoat the hulls, and how much did it cost, money and time wise?

Guys:

It will be a REAL good regatta. Just left planning meeting earlier. Bug raffle, good food, BIG bomb fire Saturday night. Lot of boats come in early. We will have some entertainment and jello shots for early arrivals. If you are going to come, go on site and pre-register.

Re: nacra 5.2 finally done - 05/09/07 03:05 AM

I don't remember exactly how much the decals were but about 20-30$. I had the hulls done but he made a big mistake on the price. (Way to cheap). He will not do it again for that price. He sprayed the dagger boards and the rudders after I repaired them. I had about 2 hours per board and per rudder sanding on them.

I think I'll do the normal division this year, even though it's on a new boat I have no experience with

Re: nacra 5.2 finally done - 05/09/07 03:59 AM

Doug, they had a novice division at red fish reach, which is a long distance race that most people without spinakers don't even bother to do (me and like 2 other boats were the only ones crazy enough to do it without a spin) so I would think they'd have it at WW which has alot more non-spin boats?
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Nacra 5.2 finally done - 05/09/07 04:10 AM

Get out there with us. You will probably be racing with me in the Open Class Non Spin. I will probably race with the reacher if i can get reacher halyard fix. Broke it last time I sailed. If not uni. You will learn a lot. I have to get better at my starts. I use to be deadly. Finished 2nd in State in 81 in Hobie 16B. Back when we had 25 boats starts. Hope to see all of you there. A member of my old Hobie fleet who's nickname is La Bamba would always bring what he called "Dave's Secret Sauce" to light bon fires. It was usually a mix of automatic transmission fluid and miscellaneous petro chemicals. Bomb fire is an apt description of the results.

you know, I may or may not camp sunday night. I could keep you company if me and my friends decide to camp there. I mentioned it to them, we may do it.
I do live in west houston so it's ~1 hour drive to the dike. I know its nothing like your 4-5 hours, but hey, still something

Just curious, how experienced are you in sailing?
I could take you and Kris around the bay, maybe we could do something fun like sail around to east beach and take a break there, and then come back... or sail to kemah or red fish island as a group.. we'll see. I *think* Kris has only been to the dike a few times, not sure though.
Posted By: airborne

Re: nacra 5.2 finally done - 05/09/07 07:29 AM

That would be great. I sailed a monoslug not as skipper but as crew for about 2 years. I have only sailed on a lake. I have only had the 5.2 out about 10 times in no more than 10 knots.

The trip around the bay sounds great.

Re: nacra 5.2 finally done - 05/09/07 07:31 AM

ok we'll plan something out sunday morning when I get there, weather permitting. I really hope sunday isnt rainy so I can go, and then I hope the wind is decent so we can have a nice cruz/race.

If it's high winds we can easily rig the boats down to suit it, and can just not tighten the mainsail etc as well.
I'm really excited about finishing my exams and going back to houston... I really don't feel like studying for my exams anymore.

Also, will you have a crew with you, or are you coming alone? I'm bringing 2 or 3 friends along, and 1 can crew for you if needed.
Posted By: johnny872005

Re: nacra 5.2 finally done - 05/09/07 07:33 AM

Also, have you flown your 5.2 yet? How do you like it?

Funny thing is, I've never been on a monohull, and I've only ridden on my hold H16, and someones inter17 (very nice boat)
I was going to get to ride on a tiger and a inter20 but there wasn't anytime. I'd like to try a monohull someday, to just get an idea what it's like.
Most people don't skip to a cat like I did.
Posted By: airborne

Re: nacra 5.2 finally done - 05/09/07 07:40 AM

I will be coming alone. I can also crew for you is need be. How much sailing have you done?

Also I don't know if you know this but I have a son about your age. (So yes I am an old guy. 49 years young.)
Posted By: johnny872005

Re: nacra 5.2 finally done - 05/09/07 07:46 AM

ya I thought you'd be somewhere near that age. That's fine, most of the other guys are anyways :P
I think I'm the only one in my age anyways. I know one other person that goes to the dike and crews on an I-20 at the regattas who's my age, but that's about it.

I randomly got into sailing last year. I used to see the cats and just went out and bought a boat. I've been sailing for a year, but I've done alot of sailing since then, and have been doing way too much reading about it as well. It's alot of fun, and I feel I have a really good grasp on it, but still everyone can get better.

but ya you coming alone will work out fine, it'll give us a better chance to do something long distance. My friends can go with us (1 with you and 1 with me, and we'll see what to do with the other one if another friend comes). That way they won't have to stay on the beach.

should be alot of fun

Be careful camping by yourself when the sailors leave. There can be some ruff people down there fishing. We plan on having a compound for WW to stop traffic on the beach. Kind of like the old wagon circle.

P.S. Set your trap lines a little high till you get the feel of it. Then you want to be level with the hull.

5,2 Dagger on Ebay - 05/10/07 08:24 PM

Hey Airborne,As an FYI in case you need a spare one, there is a single dagger on ebay for sale. Item number is 180114628829 or search under Nacra.
I used to own a 5.2 back when they had the knee buster bar. Good luck to you with the boat, it looks great!!
Posted By: AaronVZ

Re: 5,2 Dagger on Ebay - 05/10/07 08:27 PM

What was involved in removing the center (Knee buster) bar? Did you just take it off? Does it serve any purpose onter than busting knees? I have a Sol Cat 18 with a center bar and would like to remove it as well.
Posted By: CraigO

Re: 5,2 Dagger on Ebay - 05/10/07 09:39 PM

I left the back casting on as a foot hold. and took the front one off. You will have to put a bolt/screw through the beam straps and beam to keep the front beam from rotating. Later on, the beams were held on to the hulls by bolts in the beam to keep the beam from rotating Then the center bar was not really needed anymore to stop beam rotation.
Posted By: airborne

Re: 5,2 Dagger on Ebay - 05/10/07 09:54 PM

All you have to do is put a couple of rivets through the straps on the front beam. It keeps the front beam from rotating. The say you don't have to put any in the rear beam but I did anyway. If you look at the third pix in this topic it shows the rivets. I also left the rear casting on so I can put the rear bar back and also as a foot hold.

Re: 5,2 Dagger on Ebay - 05/11/07 02:49 AM

Interesting. On my Sol Cat the bolts go through the beam (no Straps)which should prevent rotation. Any Sol Cat Drivers know if it is safe to remove the center bar?

If you have 3 boats to make class and there is an interest, they said they will consider a novice class. They did it last year. Look me up Sunday. Hobie 17 with reacher. "Stress Free" #007.

Beautiful boat. I just bought a 5.2 today and hope to get sailing soon with maybe just a few items to replace immediately. However, I see a total refit maybe in the winter months. I would like to stay in touch and maybe you could pass on some of that info. Great Job. Thanks.

Doug, I think you need a new picture of your boat? or is that really not your boat? I swear I click on attachments and expect to see something new but it is always that same picture that always makes me jealous.

Bill,

I'm Todd, the one with the Nacra 6.0na, Tx flag spinnaker.
It was nice to meet you and your son. That's probably the record for driving for a day of sailing!!

Also nice to see kris and Erin, Dennis and Doug.

I had a great time, even though the light air!
