Hot stick repairs - 06/29/07 08:19 PM

I thought that this has been discussed here before but I tried a search on the forum for this info to no avail, so I am asking. Can anyone with experience give me advice about repairing hot sticks? I have two that are damaged that should be perfect to use to make one good one - one with a broken top section (outside tube)and one with a broken bottom section (inside tube). Can they be taken apart, exchanged, and put back together? If so, how is that done?

Just to be more clear - these are the black color fiberglass tiller extensions that we always referred to as Hot sticks; probably made by Arriba but with no name on them and I don't know how old.

Yes they can - I've done it before. There's a spring pin gong through the inner part that you need to remove at the bottom. That should let you remove the small outer sleeve and pull the inner part through the top (if you have a cork ball at the top, you will need to remove it or drill a large hole through which to extract.

do you mean the plain black fiberglass sticks?

If so, remove the rubber grip on the end (or the cork ball). Once you cut the connector end off, the inner tube will slide out and all that keeps it from over extending is a SS metal pin.

Mike
if this is the hotstick that you get with the hobies, I have at least one brand new one in my shed, ( l think l have two the shed needs a clean)l can sell them cheap, not sure on the cost from Austraila to USA, it most likely be cheaper than trying to fix one.

Mike,

Arriba / Hot Sticks are now being made by Hobie 20 sailor Bob Edmonds in Little Rock, Arkansas. He's a really decent guy to work with and would probably help if you shot him a line.

Thanks, Matt. I did call and e-mail Bob and he told me how to take apart the tillers to try and make one good one. Thanks to the other responders, too.

**** ball at that end).
Grab the end that connect and put some dish washing soap where the slot is where tube connect.
SLOWLY move it in and out till you get it all the way out.
This will get all the sand and salt water out of in.

I do it to both of mine EVERY time I use time now and they have never stuck again. I almost lost one before I started doing this.

Doug, that would be a big waste of my time. There is very little salt in the water here on the north coast. Also, if you read my original post, the problem was that I had two broken tillers that I could make one good one from if I could get them apart - it had nothing to do with sand or salt.

Be glad you don't have to worry about those to problems. Fill a bucket up around here and let in set for a few minutes. There is about half inch of sand in it most of the time.
