Cat insurance

Hey guys I've just received my insurance bill for my boat , a Hobie 20, State Farm raised my premiun 41 % for no reason whatsoever (never had a claim or anything like that).
I have requested a quote from Boat R US and it is a real rip off.
I am paying $ 240 under my present State Farm coverage and would like to continue in the same rage, any suggestions for insurance coverage ?

I insured my F16 through US Sailing for $246. All online, no hassle for a one design class. Only took a few minutes. I forget whether US Sailing membership was required.

Correct. What I should have said is that US Sailing's insurance company accept the F16 as part of their "One Design Program". I believe this was a result of the US F16 Association gaining recognition by US Sailing as an organized class.

Old guys can use AARP/The Hartford and tack it on to the homeowners policy.

Like Tiki said ... Progressive. I just made a claim, very quick, couretous and happy to fill my claim. You can sign up on-line AND they know what an F16 is!

Progressive doesn't list Hobie as a manufacturer. Wierd huh?

Is it a possibility that you have a deductible decrease provision within your policy? State Farm includes this on some of their policies.

same with progressive ..25% reduction per year when no claims are made.

USAA which then uses progressive. No problems so far, but no claims.

Couple of points:
- Check what value you are using for your cat/trailor.
- Check if it is a "replacement cost" or "actual cash value" policy. It makes a premium difference (because what they pay for damage differs)

- If you can fix the boat yourself, get a "liability only" policy which is very cheap (comparably) because it doesn't cover the loss of your boat (fire, theft, etc), or damage to it caused by you (if you hit something)

NEVER go without liability insurance, because if you hit me, I'll find the best ambulance chaser I can and take your car, house, future wages, weed-eater, garbage disposal, Christmas tree lights, and yard gnome.... <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

Which leeds to the next aspect of insurance for the older "Millenium Falcon Class of Cat",that still have value and are not allowed on the race course without acceptable insurance (which is understandable).Who is writing the policies for older boats.Makes it kind of hard to come to an event if you cannot get insured. you cna get insurance for almost anything. When I got insurance for my 6.0 through boatus I don't think they knew what the heck they were insuring. If you tell them how much insurance you want (if you are getting full coverage) for xxx dollars they will give it to you.

Ask for a liability only quote, or low value and high deductible.

Mostly, you need to talk to someone who knows what a sailboat is, i.e. US Sailing, Boat US or Progressive.

I've had Progressive Insurance for years, last renewal was $254 for the year. I did have one claim about 5 years ago they paid on after doing a little research, had to get them a price list from England and the cost of a Smythe main. I sail a Dart20 and that time had a Smythe main that was torn, mast dented... when the boat was picked up off the beach by the remnant weather of a water spout that showed up off of Clearwater Beach. We did a reenactment for the weather channel that I heard is still playing.

My old man told me when I started driving that if I hit a pedestrian to make sure and kill him/her. Even if I had to hit em' again. Prison is far less costly than a good lawyer. Out in 3 on good behaviour and you still have all your stuff. Be careful who you sue.

You know, that actually doesn't sound as bad as a lifetime defending myself in court....
