Sail boxes

Sail boxes - 08/16/07 02:49 PM

Earlier this year I got a few people together to buy sailboxes. I have a guy here that makes them, and if we get an order of 5 or more, he cuts a pretty good deal. If you are up for getting a sailbox, please shoot me an email. I want to add another to my trailer, so if we can get 4 others, they'll be $550 each. They are all aluminum (diamond plate), and are made to the same dimensions as the standard fiberglass box. The rear door open down, and the front 5' of the top comes off.
JW, TBack, Joanna, did you like your boxes?

Yes, and I get lots of compliments on it.

Only thing I added was a plastic insert for the flooring...the "wavy" kind used for screen enclosure roofing.

Re: Sail boxes - 08/27/07 02:19 PM

Anybody else what? Living with John in his sail box?

I do know that back in the early 1990's we did a seminar somewhere in the Midwest, like Kansas or Nebraska, and at least three people had sail boxes that opened up into camper tents right on the trailer. Really cool. I probably still have photos somewhere.

The box is wonderful!! If anyone needs one Trey is the one to get it from. Well built, good looking, lots of room and a great price.

Re: Sail boxes - 08/28/07 02:36 AM

I don't have any pics, sorry. Maybe Oley or JW can hook us up. Dimensions are ~ :10' x 14" x 24"
Come to Catfest and you can see it.

Here is the only one I have. The front top opens and the back end drops down. Hope that helps.

I would love to get two... but getting them to Ohio is a bit of a problem. Anyone traveling from NC to Ohio any time soon?

Re: Sail boxes - 08/28/07 12:58 PM

I would like one, but 10' isn't long enough for my one-peice spinnaker pole, which I think is about 11'6", can they make one 12 feet long? There is a guy in Orlando whom I have called, he built some for the local Orlando guys, but he is burried in his regular job until October, and he wants about $1,200 for a custom 12' aluminum box...

Re: Sail boxes - 08/28/07 01:22 PM

buy 4" pvc tube, a 4" to 4" straight coupling, and a 4" cap. Cut coupling in two (to get two sleeves - table saw w/ fence works well). Cut hole in bottom corner / end of box (be sure to leave room for coupling - use inside of coupling as hole template from inside the box), slide one coupling onto tube, slide tube into hole in box, slide second coupling half onto PVC inside box, slather with 3M 4200, slide couplings tightly together against box side, drill and put in three small screws into each coupling, and lightly support the front of the tube...spinnaker pole problem solved.

Re: Sail boxes - 08/28/07 01:42 PM

Jake idea works great..we did that and have plently of room for the spin pole.

Re: Sail boxes - 08/28/07 01:55 PM

Joanna, I see you have your hull cradles lifted via blocks, was boat beam to toy box clearance a problem without the blocks? With the blocks, how much room do you have between the beams and the top of the box? Thanks.

That was actually a WWDLD with a light sprinkling of WWJKD.

Timbo,
I've mounted mine directly on the trailer beams (used some weather stripping as a gasket) and have about 1" clearance below the dolphin striker. Enough room to open the box (with the boat on the trailer) and slide the top section back ontop of the box...still clearing the dolphin striker.

Well, I'm not in NE anymore but I want one too! And Jake, send me some PVC pipe!

Re: Sail boxes - 08/28/07 04:17 PM

Timbo--The wood blocks on the trailer are actually so that the boat clears the fenders. (Oley built the trailer himself) The dolphin stricker clears the box by about 8 inches and the boat by about 16. Hope that helps.

Every time I hear a story like this I wonder if someone else found some "Cycle-Campers" in the corner of a warehouse.

In the 80's there was a company in that general area that made a tiny popup camper designed to be towed behind a motorcycle. It did not sell very well and the company went under.

These things were the perfect size to fit between the hulls of a catamaran. I knew a couple of people who did that. I bought one from a dealer real cheap, with the intent of mounting it on my trailer. A friend begged a lot and I sold it to him to mount like a tool box in the bed of his pickup.

We later found these things did not like water. They would fall apart if you got them wet launching your boat.

I have not seen one in years, I suspect they fell apart when people parked them outside like they were real trailers.

Well Mary, I know you're refering to the seminar held at Lake Perry (Kansas) but for the life of me I've don't recall any of these campers. Carl, you're probably right they must have been junk.

I've been scheming on a quick/safe way to put the double stack rails on an old pop-up trailer. The tent thing is getting old (or wait, maybe that's me getting old).

180? Is that loaded? My PVC tube (12" schedule 40 not the light stuff) weighs less than 1/2 that! Just a little less than my aluminum box I made.

These units for camping have intrigued me. They are Australian and my cousins all have them there. Seem to be very well built. 3 dog camping

Re: Sail boxes - 04/25/08 02:14 PM

I picked up BVining's box for him a few months ago from Trey's house.... I could not believe how light they were! It can easily be moved my one person (although two is nice because of the size). I think Trey said it was only about 25-30 lbs!
If my wishlist wasn't already so long i'd be getting a box myself for sure.

Re: Sail boxes - 04/25/08 02:15 PM

These boxes weigh in somewhere between 30-40 lbs. They are extremely light, but they are still pretty stiff. I've laid on top of mine before.
Who else wants one?

Re: Sail boxes - 04/25/08 02:20 PM

What we need to develop is a sailbox that when fully opened, turns into a tent and a bar, for the regattas!

Re: Sail boxes - 04/25/08 02:39 PM

the lunchboxes are the best trailer box you can currently find on the market. Not only because of their quality, but because of the cost compared to its inferior products.

Its on my shortening list of "things".

No, only a recliner option (lazy-boy style).

I keep trying to get Trey to merge with Krantz Enterprises LTD to get a margarita machine built into the front.
