1982 nacra 5.2 rudder limit screw? - 10/05/07 09:34 AM

hi all,
in my reading about all the adjustments possible on a sporty cat i see references to altering the angle of the rudders, in the down position, by use of a rudder limit screw
have attached a pic of my rudder casting
can't see any screws there but can see what looks to be a threaded hole in about the right position
should there be a screw in there?
if there was it would only allow me to to push the rudders back, would that be desirable?

1,000kms through croc waters, 3 people up a coast on a laden 14foot cat. inspirational stuff!

Hey,
I don't have one of those! Or at least I don't think I do. I will have to go look.

I had those on my 5.2 also. From what I have been told there is a nylon screw that goes in there to adjust the rudders. The farther back the rudders go the more weather helm you get.

Well, I have spent the last hour adjusting my rudder crossbar so that my rudders have a few degrees of toe in. Before they were slightly toed out.

yes, there is supposed to be a nylon screw in there to adjust the stop position for the rudder.

It seems like all my old N5.2 rudders were raked all the way up under the boat by removing the nylon screw. that seemed to be the best rudder location anyway. i am not sure you really need them unless you are facing specific helm issues.

How is your hull alignment? We used to have to put "spacers" between the main beam and the hulls to get proper alignment (or in later models, redrill the rear beam "guides"). We tried to get the bows a small amount wider than the sterns. Assuming mainsheet and rig tension would tend to pull the bows together.

thanks for the responses guys

i figured that if i wasn't having helm problems with the rudders as far forward as possible, no screws, then it wasn't really an issue but i might experiment with them anyway

will get out a tape measure and check the hull and rudder alignment. the goose marine 5.2 setup guide mentions hull toe-out of 35mm or about an inch and a half

quick serial number Q, my hull serial number is TRRC2158M82B, as far as i know the 82 at the ends means built in 1982, does the 2158 mean the 2158th nacra 5.2 built?

i see that airborne lists his 1983 5.2 as 2410, which from his pics is the boats sail number, is it also the hull serial number???

Yeah, mine is 1499, it is the sail number and in the serial number.

As for the rudders I now have mine toed in every so slightly, and the hulls are toed out just a tad, but it is hardly noticable. The hull toed out is such a small percentage of the speed that without a whole bunch of other 5.2's to compare to you will never notice it.

so your boat, 1499, and my boat, 2158, have the simple non-adjustable spreader but i see that airborne's, 2410, has the later style, adjustable for rake

but we all got the bar across the tramp

Yeah, my spreaders are the old style. I am not sure how important the adjustable ones are.

I love my bar, it is a great footrest!
