A-Class Worlds - The Pot is Sweeter

A-Class Worlds - The Pot is Sweeter - 10/25/07 04:59 PM

Since the last update on this regatta, the depth of competition has gotten even deeper. Here are some new additions:

1. Randy Smyth will be sailing an LR2 with a new mainsail design.
2. Robbie Daniel will be looking to avenge his second place Trials finish against Charlie Ogeltree.
3. Mitch Booth has another passport and will be sailing as a Spaniard with a Dutch sail number!
4. Epic ocean sailor Cam Lewis will be joining us. At 6'3" and the frame to go with it, I would not line up to leeward of Cam on the starting line in anything over 10 knots.
5. Matt Struble decided to quit polishing his ice runners for a couple of weeks and the DN Iceboat World Champ will dust off his Flyer for some soft H20 racing.

The entry number is still at the maximum limit of 100 with a few still on the waiting list hoping for last minute cancellations. We have been contacted by lots of sailing magazines and websites wanting daily updates and our newest member Tom Siders has volunteered to handle that task. We have been contacted by a TV company that wants to film the event.

With four Olympic medalists, several world champions, and who knows how many national or continental champions in the fleet, this is shaping up to be THE MULTIHULL regatta of the year.

So why aren't the rest of you sailing A-Cats?

Here is a post from Italy:

The list of the approved entrants to the 2007 A-class WC is really impressive, no doubt the best ever with four past A class champions (Glenn Ashby, Scott Anderson, Pete Melvin and Mitch Booth, who comes back to sail a major A class event after 13 years). There are six Olympic medalists also competing (Randy Smyth, Jay and Pease Glaser, Charlie Ogletree, Andrew Landenberger and Goran Marstrom), a world known maxi-multihull skipper (Cam Lewis), an 18’ skiff WC (Howie Hamlin), the current DN Iceboat WC (Matt
Struble), a prominent AC yacht designer (Mike Drummond) and many more. Very seldom a sailing event has gathered such a various and qualified attendance. Equally impressive is the equipment roster which includes the first ever A- cat fitted with a solid wing sail, (Ben Hall’s project is
worth at least the same deal of attention paid to Rohan Veal’s flyng Moth), the radical platform designed by Richard Roake for Ian and John Lindhal with a new type of mainsail to be tailored for it by Randy Smyth, the evolution of the XJ done by Peter Cogan, the new Swedish state-of-the-art all carbon wonder (the Marstrom M5) together with the more or less older Flyer Mk1/Mk2, Bimare/VMI XJ, Tool, and of course the Melvin A2/A3 contingent.

Sail Fast, Sail Light.

His name is Goran Marstrom, his company is Sailcenter of Sweden, and his A-Cats are very Swedish and very beautiful boats.

Re: A-Class Worlds - The Pot is Sweeter - 10/26/07 01:20 AM

Bob, if the rest of us were sailing A cats, there wouldn't be enough room for all those late additions at the Worlds, since it is limited to a max of 100 boats. Are those late additions already -in- or are they on the waiting list?

Man, that's a lot of tallent! Should be quite a regatta, but with 100 boats on the line, how are they going to police the all important starts, to be sure the correct white hull gets called back for being over early? I hope you are going to be using a video system for help in the protest room!

The late additions we mentioned above are in and there are still a couple of folks waiting. We (USACA) are considering asking the international class to consider dropping the max entry rule and if we have to we will use split fleets or gate starts to manage the larger fleet size (like the Laser and 505 classes do respectively).

Regarding managing a 100 boat fleet, it's done often and there will be boats on either end to call OCS'ers. It won't be perfect but the RC team we have will make it as fair as possible.

It's going to be a great week of sailing!

100 boats is easy. Bow numbers and pin boats are very helpful. 450+ gets challenging... <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Just out of curiosity, who is the RC team for this event?

Billy Richnow is the P.R.O. - together with some of his usual team. I think he also has Betty Reeh helping him as well. With those guys involved it is going to run smoothly.

PU will be there as the IRO course consultant and as an IJ. It can't be a worlds without an IRO. Billy's "only" a RRO.

10 Clinio Freitas Brazil BRA 7

Clinio won an Olympic Medal (bronze, I believe) crewing Lars Grael's Tornado. I don't know how he is sailing nowadays, but certainly above average. I wonder if he is sailing the SambA Cat...

To continue the hijack (and to show how much freaking material we're covering to get our RRO and Judge certifications)

ISAF Regulations
Quote
18.12.12 ISAF shall have the right to approve and/or appoint the Race Officer(s) and/or Course
Representatives when deemed necessary for the following events otherwise not covered
by the Regulations above:
ISAF World Sailing Rankings graded Events;
World Championships of non-Olympic ISAF Classes, when agreed with the ISAF

Mike is correct. An IRO is not required. "Reserving the right to appoint" is not the same as "required."

However, an International Jury is required at a Worlds. PU is the Canadian on that Jury, and since he is an IRO, too - he will act as a course consultant.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled A-cat lovefest . . .

Re: A-Class Worlds - The Pot is Sweeter - 11/01/07 05:34 PM

Aren't rules fun???

While not "rules", you all should see what ISAF has to say regarding black flags (Race Management Policies for ISAF Events). Here's a hint: If there's nothing wrong with the setup of the line, go immediately to black flag after first general recall. The RO really needs to have their stuff together!

That will help with a 100 boat line at your love fest! Hard core... <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
