Nacra 5.2 Hulls - 10/31/07 12:43 PM

I am going to have to repair some delaminatin on my '77 Nacra 5.2 starboard hull.
Can somebody pass on some good instruction as to how I would go about removing the decks.
What is the proper releasing agent to remove the decks?

Clayton: I have been searching this site and came up with no listings. Is there a specific word or phrase that I am missing that I should insert in the "search" box?

release agent is a chisel lightly and slowly tapped with a hammer. With some patience, you should be able to remove the decks in one piece with very little damage.

It was my thread, and it can't be more than 1-2 pages back.

When removing the aft decks, I used a dremmel to cut lateral seams (port to starboard) before and aft of the dagger wells in the decks. This allowed the removal of a mojority of the aft decks without tearing up the dagger well structure. Once inside I added bulkheads in addition to repairing stringers. When repairs were complete, sand clean the over lapping edges of the decks and the hull lip. I used epoxy and a single layer of nondirection cloth between the decks and the hull lip with weights on top to squish it all together when curing.

FYI - I saw a Nacra 5.2 on ebay in texas the other day. No mast but the hulls looked solid.

NOOOOOO, don't tell people about that! I am looking to by it, because I just bought Airborne's old mast.

It is actually for a friend but we were thinking we might be able to get him in a boat cheap with it.

Hey Fearless,

what did you build your bulkheads out of?

For some reason I could not reply to your PM. It would not let me post a reply.

I think gree answered your question.

There was a 5.2 on craigslist two days ago, now I can't find it.

Hey Fearless,

actually used the cheap "home depot" pink foam with Epoxy resin and several layers of cloth. Polyester resin wont work with the cheap foam as it will melt it into goo... First thing I did was create cardboard cutouts of the shape of the bulkheads by inserting in the hulls at the desired locations and trimming to fit. Then trace the cardboard onto the foam and cut the bulkhead shape. Layed up 2 layers of cloth and resin on wax paper, then the foam cutout over that, then 2 more layers of cloth and resin. One last layer of wax paper and some weight ontop to apply pressure when curing. Came out sweet, made 8 bulkheads (4 per hull) that way. 2 bulkheads for each of the forward hulls, 2 for each aft hull, immediately in front and behind the dagger wells.

Did you weigh the results?

I added 6 lbs per hull for all the bulkheads and many stringer repairs! The boat is significantly stiffer and Im not worried about the forward hulls twisting off during a hot spin reach!

That is what I am going for, since i have added a spin to the boat and plan to keep her sailing for a while i just want to stiffen her up.

That sounds like a rational trade to me. I think the obsession with minimum weight has gotten w-a-a-y out of hand.
