Amazing isn't it, to what length anonymous posters go to justify their own cowardness.

This time one of them is hiding behind a disabled person !

That must be a new low.

HobieZealot, not very cool.

I don't know who you are behind your "personna" but I probably know you in person.

That's not cool. Unfortunately, you've included a brand name to your handle which will forever associate itself with your thoughtless, tactless, downright stupid post.

Thanks a--hole. Go away. We don't need you.

Dude, I've got a kid that was born with a lot of problems, the worse being spina bifida. He will live with both physical and mental challenges his whole life. He's had many surgeries to help improve his quality of life.

He's a good kid, hold down a job where he gets good reviews and has many friends who look out for his well being.

The saddest thing he ever said was to ask my wife, "Mom, will there ever be an operation that will let me walk like other kids?"

Your poster is in extremely bad taste. You sir, are a piece of hot, steaming fecal matter. Please don't ever post another message here again.

Why is retarded not politically correct? I guess I wouldn't wholly consider it accurate, when I think of a good context for the word retarded I think of: backed off, turned down, something of that nature. More along the mechanical lines. Its in no way demeaning, it could be used in a demeaning manner, but that has nothing to do with the word it self or what it describes. Does saying Mentally Challenged or Mentally handicapped somehow soften the blow of the truth? Will these terms at some point become as publically unacceptable as retarded if overused? Giving a condition a different name doesn't make it any less tradgic.

Would it have been different had the poster used more P.C. language? The point is that we facelessly argue one another and on certain points nothing can be gained or won, there by making us act or appear much less intelligent than we are.

Intolerance is just the latest form of discrimination.

Well Karl, my son is mentally retarded/mentally challenged/etc. We know it and we use the term to describe him when asked what his issues are. We do not, however, use the term to disparage him or anyone else who have challenges in life beyond their control.

The graphic above is mean spirited and lacks any taste. I am intolerant of scumbags who think posting something like that is humorous. Would it be okay if the Downs kid was replaced with an African American and some witty remark about his/her race or appearance? The Downs kid would laugh if shown the poster. The African American would kick your butt. Pick on someone who understands and can fight back.

Mr Zealot,

I 've had the HONOR of working with the Special Olympics. My first event when I joined Fleet #54 was their Special Olympics with Danial Flanigan. This event was the starting point for sailing in the Special Olympics and today is a worldwide program. I was blessed to work with some increadable athletes and their families. I was fortunate enough to be asked to be a sailing coach on the Maryland Delegation for the Special Olympics World Games held in NewHaven Conn 1995.

I can only pity you, for you will never know the great joy and acts of kindnesses that I recieved ....

Suggest we all vote to reduce Mr. Zealot to one star. Too bad there is not a zero star rating. Most of know people or have friends that live with or care for people with special needs. They are to be honored and deserve a special place in this World.

I've got to say when I first opened to read this thread, I thought this would be one of those more amusing conversations I often read on the forum, I get a lot of laughs off this forum, some teeth grinding, but more laughs.

But that is the weakess, lowest, most distasteful thing I have seen to date, you sir, are as weak as piss, I hope you are identified, and you lose some friends, thats what you deserve, think about it.

Can we get that removed, if the poster won't get rid of it? Rick or Mary?

Strongly second that motion. What message does this send to the potential catsailor? It's a very poor, distasteful and embarrassing representation of this forum.

Re: That's Mr. Weanie to you - 01/14/08 02:11 PM

I agree with Robi. The context of the message is whats offensive not the single word. Interacting with children, disabled/handicapped or not is usually a eye opening experience. You are reminded of how simple life could/should be as they are not cluttered with the many hassles of adulthood.

You should step back a bit think a little, get involved with something SPECIAL and see what these kids are like. Retarded maybe but full of LOVE you can't get anywhere else.

Note: Remember to Start the Brain before engaging the MOUTH.

I had the pleasure of taking kids sailing at Camp Bluejay in Tehachapi California a few years ago with the local Hobie dealer and I have to say it was one of the most rewarding sailing days of my life. To be there with those kids and be around their enthusiasm while sailing was moving to say the least. We could all learn alot from these kids.
Mr. Zelot has over-extended his "Karma Insurance Policy". When he is at his lowest point in life (if he isn't already), this will be right there staring him in the face. If I ever get to meet him in person, I hope I am strong enough to just take pitty on him rather than break his nose.

Okay, I have managed to delete the offensive graphic in both the beginning post and its attachment.

I did not delete the user from the forum, because he has been contributing to the forum for quite a while and this is the first offensive thing I have seen. He made a mistake, as many of us do from time to time on the internet as well as in e-mails, and I think he has been properly punished by the forum users.

I DO think he should apologize.

I have seen that same picture elsewhere on the internet, used in the same negative context, and I think he just saw that and thought it conveyed what he was trying to say. BIG error in judgment.

Re: That's Mr. Weanie to you - 01/14/08 06:23 PM

Nice measured response Mary.
We have all done and said stupid things we regret.
I also think that Mr.Weanie should apologize and sign it.
How one handles these kind of mistakes is more important(to me anyway) than the mistake itself.

On a positive note.
My first experience with a disabled sailor was at the 17 Nationals in Syracuse.Matt probably has the article from the Hotline. He was very excited that we were going to have the event on a lake(No surf). He (Evan?) was then able to have his support team lift him on the boat a push him off. He was a great guy and a pretty darn good sailor.
He was able to compete in a Nationals before his disability made it impossible. Pretty Cool.

Just by going through all his posts, I would bet money that he is a 16A Fleeter. He must be pretty well known. He obviously likes to promote youth sailing (his posts)but not youth handicapped sailing. Defend him all you wish but still a spineless worm to me. Still would love to meet him in person.

Google gave me this information based on a search of the sail number:
Arie van Duijn
Fort Myers FL
This of course does not definitively prove that HobieZealot or anyone else owns sail #107568
Posted By: fin.

Re: That's Mr. Weanie to you - 01/14/08 08:29 PM

Arie's a nice guy, I spent yesterday sailing with him. If he is actually "Mr. Weanie" I suspect the statement is a result of English not being his first language. As Wouter said this morning, no matter how fluent you become in a foreign language, you will never be a "native" speaker.

But, I gotta know! How did you do that!!???

It was definitely not me, as you can tell from my username I don't like to hide behind some alias. Where my name came into the mix is that I now own Rich's old boat, which is the H16 in the picture (#107568). I would suggest though that before we start throwing around names we clarify the context in which that name is used and are certain of our allegations. I teach physical therapy for a living so I get to spent a lot of time with people with disabilities, and I do not appreciate my name being associated with this type of posting <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I send the person who posted my name unrefutable evidence that he was wrong, and requested that he post something to that effect.

Sadly the censuring of the material means I cannot see it or judge for myself what the fuss is about. I am pleased Mary, that you have seen that a cooler head is needed here than burning a mistake at the stake.
Someone, I think Shakespeare said humour is just tragedy plus time.
Humour, if that what is was is risqué by its very nature....everyone laughs until someone steps over an invisable mark.
Would this man indeed disparage a challenged person in a personal and thoughtless way?

I don't have to give a S*** what I say or do on the net because no one has that sort of hold on me..but some people are further into the rat race than others and might just e taking sensible precautions.
