New toy - 01/30/08 12:06 AM

After more than six years, my boat is finally sailing. I think it looks good.

Re: Third picture - 01/30/08 01:15 AM

I have a question for you Luiz. But first let me say that I am thoroughly impressed with your creation! Hope you have a great time sailing that beauty. Ok, so in picture 2, it just looks very odd to me seeing the daggerboard so far forward. I am not very familiar with the physics of this, so what are the advantages of having the board more forward or more aft? thanks

NICE.That's gorgeous. I've got an old Trailer Tri 720 that I've been working on for awhile. I can't seem to stay ahead of the repair work. After 6 years you must be one happy camper.

Re: New toy - 01/30/08 05:29 PM

That's great!!! Congrats.

It seems to sit really high in the water. Is it running on it's designed water line?

I hope it turns out to be everything you hoped for.

Much admiration for see a project like this through.

Re: Third picture - 01/30/08 08:35 PM

The boards are forward and angled to provide a certain amount of lift for the leeward ama. Not enough to be a true foiler, but enough to keep the bows from stuffing and the ama from generating a lot of drag from being submerged. Check out the video link that was posted, check out the banana boards forward on the amas. Then look at how the lee ama is not submerging - same idea here.

Biggest Congrats on "the end of the beginning" to your relationship with your Catri <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Here's to many exciting times ahead.

Now for an important question: When are you going to invite me for a ride??

Re: Third picture - 01/30/08 10:23 PM

The daggerboards (bruce foils, actually) are displaced forward in order to increase dynamic stability. The center of lateral effort is kept in place because only their vertical projection counts, so it is effectively smaller, and the rudder is big. Bill Roberts also did something similar in the ARC 21 and calls it "shared lift".

Re: New toy - 01/30/08 10:27 PM

I have not weighted it yet, but it seems to be sailing in its lines. There is no carbon at all in the boat.

Are you talking about board position or that high trapping position? <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

There are more or less 20 pictures worth seeing and the best ones are in the first posts. This one is Rio seen from aboard, returning from a day sail cruise we like to do.

I'll say more about the boat after we test her in Buzios with stronger winds. With about 15 knots she sailed at 18 knots, but the big genoa wasn't ready yet, so we had only the main and jib up. I tried to fly two hulls but there wasn't enough wind and sail area.

Besides that, I can say that Tom Speer is right: hydrofoils don't make a boat faster, they make a fast boat more seaworthy - without ballast, multihulls pitch, roll, etc. differently from monohulls. They move fast but only once or twice, not like a pendulum that oscilates many times after each perturbation. Add hydrofoils and those sharp movements are damped, making for a really smooth ride. We could have a glass of water on the table all the time and it would not spill.

The C Class guys in Canada gave it a try.

Rob White fitted extra front boards to a F20 I think, for extra lift and I think a German company too on an eagle ??

Aclass were using canted boards for extra lift but think they outlawed it ?????

Re: New toy - 02/06/08 12:38 PM

I'm pretty sure the ARC 21 has the dagger boards forward of the front beam!!!

It does. They are vertical, like in most boats. My boards have asymetrical sections and are inclined, so they lift part of the weight and increase stability. They are also comfortable, as you can see...
