I suspect everyone will be interested in the photos. Suggest you post them or if there are a lot stick them on somewhere like flickr. If you're not sure how, email them to me and I can do it. mark dot thomson at ieee dot org.

I just got back from Auckland on Thursday. Was really hoping to be there to see the Worlds, but my work situation forced me back to the US early. Great venue, though February is not the most reliable month for decent wind.

Re: Tornado Worlds in Auckland - 02/05/08 02:26 AM

Looking at the attendance list, I was intrigued to see that Rex Sellars (NZL) is competing - the '84 Tornado Olympic gold and '88 silver medalist. His son Brett is also sailing.

Cheers, got a ride skippering for a guy from the UK. Met him for the first time a week and a half ago where he crewed for me in the F18 Nationals. Stuggled to click as a team and will need to do a lot of training in NZ but will be happy to make up the numbers. Could have been following it from the wrong side of the Tasman.

Re: Tornado Worlds in Auckland - 02/23/08 10:01 AM

Opening cermony tonight, Sunday Practice race with race one on Monday.

Unfortunatly my crew (boat owner) injured his back at the AUS F18 Champs just before heading over to NZ and is having a lot of trouble getting in and out on trap. Is getting plenty of Physio but still not looking good. So far I have been working the main and trapping down wind and trying our best not to come last. If his back does not improve, we may have to pull the pin.

Yesterday and today were blowing upto 40 knots with gusts to 50 from the NE. Tomorrow will ease to 30 gusting 40 before droping later that evening. Then swing Westerly (offshore) for Monday at about 15 knots with seas dropping. So looks like the Practice race on Sunday may not be happening.

However the windsurfers are having a ball

I don't expect the link will remain there for much longer, but the following may still work after it has gone -

Ouch. I feel his pain. Literally: my back pull from the Tornado Nationals 3 years ago resurfaced for the first time yesterday when I was (GASP!) taking off my socks. (*Blush*)

Send him my well wishes, and some Advil and Soma while you are at it. (They work for me, anyway.) I hope it's nothing serious.

Viewing every one of those pics, here at a boring day at work, was awesome.

It looks as though most of them had a turning block attached to the front trap line, that the jib sheet runs through, right?

More likely to be the downhaul (cunningham), routed from the cleat at the mast base to a turning block of the crew trap and then back onto the boat with the end kept under control with a bugee (e.g. in the front cross bar). This lets the crew and/or skipper have ready access to the downhaul when going to weather.

Chris.

Re: Tornado Worlds in Auckland - 02/26/08 07:52 PM

Well, that would make sense. A good crew would 'trim' the downhaul going to weather on my last two former boats.
Thanks Chris

PS, can I help in any way with the new server for our 'Cat' club, the "Texas City Dike Yacht Club"?

I would like to point out that the driver in the above link is still a TEENAGER!
Whilst Tom is set for great things in catamaran sailing, i know that he is gutted that it may not be in the Olympic context.
Marcus is the Junior cat [Dragoon] national coach, so he can expect lots of input on windward mark roundings at his next session.

Good luck Tom and Marcus

Re: Tornado Worlds in Auckland - 03/01/08 09:05 PM

The win puts the Australians on the board as potential Olympic medallists
and is the third World Championship victory by members of the Australian
Sailing Team in the past eight weeks. Bundock and Ashby's victory comes hot
on the heels of Laser sailor Tom Slingsby's back-to-back World Championship;
a win at the 49er Worlds for Nathan Outteridge and Ben Austin in January; a
Worlds bronze medal for the Women's 470 team and a Worlds silver for the
Yngling team.

Tornado skipper Darren Bundock and crewmember Glenn Ashby went into
yesterday's racing second overall, mindful they had to finish on top of the
leader board because the weather forecast made it unlikely there would be
racing on the final, scheduled day of the regatta. They won the first race
of the day and placed sixth in the second race, giving them the overnight
lead.

When the winds gusted to 36knots this morning with an average of 27-28
knots, racing was cancelled and the Australians were declared winners with
34 points, just five points ahead of Canada and France who were tied at 39
points. Canada claimed second place and France dropped to third on
countback.

While disappointed there was no opportunity for a final tussle on the water,
Bundock and Ashby were pleased with the win and their performance in a
regatta that saw them claw their way back through the field from a 19th
placing early in the event.

"We'll take a win any way it comes," said Bundock.

"This win means a lot to us as we've now won the last four ISAF grade one
events."

Bundock is the only member of the Australian Sailing Team competing at the
Beijing Olympic Games to have previously won an Olympic Medal and, with the
Tornado class currently not included in the London 2012 Olympic Games
schedule, he and Ashby are focused on success in China later this year.

"We've got the boat going very good in light winds and now in strong winds
as well so we're ready for anything, said Bundock.

"Our focus is firmly on gold in Qingdao - I've got the silver from Sydney
and now we're going for the gold."

Bundock and Ashby have been sailing together since 2005 and have won six
World Championship titles together, including two in the Tornado class. For
Bundock, this is his sixth world title in the Tornado, having won in 2006,
2003, 2002, 2001 and 1998. Ashby is a champion A-cat sailor, having won five
world titles and his skills have combined with Bundock's Tornado experience
to create a formidable representative team in the fast and furious,
multi-hulled Tornado class.

At 36, Bundock says he's as fit as he's ever been and sailing at his best,
but the addition of Ashby brought new energy which they hope will pay off at
what could be his last Olympic campaign.

"As everyone knows, China is going to be a completely different kettle of
fish with the light conditions in Qingdao, but we've been preparing for that
for the past two years and we're confident about our potential there," said
Bundock.

The pair's success over those past two years has also brought the pressure
of expectation.

"Everyone is getting used to being beaten by us now and I guess people are
starting to see us as favourites, but I don't know if that's a good or bad
thing," laughed Bundock.

Australian Sailing Team Director Michael Jones believes the team's
consistency is what puts them at the top of their sport.

"These guys really are at the top of their game with the worst result over
the past three years being a fourth at the ISAF Olympic Classes World
Championships in Portugal last year," said Jones.

"This win is particularly pleasing in light of the tricky conditions at
Takapuna, because while the team has always had good speed, this result
shows their ability to race in more challenging conditions.

"Coming back after a bad start to the regatta, sitting down at 19th after
day one, shows their maturity and proves they are strong contenders to win
in Beijing."

Re: Tornado Worlds in Auckland - 03/02/08 01:16 AM

Three Olympic class world champions isn't bad for a small country with a population base less than that of Texas. However, I fear Qingdao will be a real light wind lottery and it wouldn't surprise me if Australia finishes with no sailing medals as happended in Athens. And I don't think we can rely on our swim team to keep us at 4th ranked Olympic nation overall.

Even if both crew are over the beam, the boat can still back out of it. That said, I'm impressed that this picth came back.
