Sail pulls out of slot in mast on Hobie Wave

Sail pulls out of slot in mast on Hobie Wave - 04/04/08 09:08 PM

Has anyone experienced and had any success fixing a mast slot (sorry I don't know the terminology very well) that seems to be spread too wide at the top of the mast? Our club has 20 or so sails for our 5 Hobies Waves and one mast only always comes back in with the top of the sail hanging out about 2'. Any suggestions on a fix? <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Assuming you have confirmed the spacing in the slot to be wider at a given point, sail ropes are even and that no one has fooled with the appature, you may well have a factory blem.. that being the case, I would think the Hobie Corp. would be happy to replace that mast extrusion. Perhaps Rick White at Catsailor could better direct your efforts with Hobie.

Does the Wave have a short section of aluminum luff track at the top of the comptip like the larger Hobies? If the luff track is all plastic, it may be cracked and be spreading open when pressure is applied and thus letting the bolt rope pull out. You might try popping the luff track off the comptip and flipping it end for end.

Matt Miller will hopefully chime in here...

I looked quickly at the Wave parts diagram on the www.hobiecat.com website, but there isn't a part number listed specifically for a comptip track for the Wave...

A) Use the standard Hobie halyard system
B) Check the track for cracks

The track may be split, but the key is actually in the halyard hook system. If you bypass the halyard hook system and use a rope halyard that does not have the wire and swedge to lock in the hook up top... the sail will not be properly held in at the head. The leech loads will pull to heavily on the plastic luff track and the head can pull out as described.

The track replacement part is #38584001
