Have you seen this man? H17 with mast head spinny!

Have you seen this man? H17 with mast head spinny! - 04/07/08 03:26 AM

I got this photo here and am chasing the owner up.
I have just had a pentax square top made for my new to me H17 by Whirlwind and want more power down wind.
This option looks the best for me personally and Chip says he made the sail.
I would love some info (photos on set-up) and skills needed to get the best out of it. Some does and don'ts.

Many thanks for any help.

That's Phil Danby from the Sandy Hook Bay Catamaran Club or Hobie Fleet 250. He will check in if not I will dig up his address.

certainly did.
Am new to spinnies really and do not want to rig badly and break the boat.
If you have any photos of how your boat is rigged that would be great.
tang at top of such a slim comtip for example (don't want to break that!)....where have you set the lines out to the pole from the bows?..the sort of stuff that tunes it well.
any cleaver thing you have done to rig...?
And also how the boat behaves and what to expect??....just a book really.

OK. The season has not started for us yet. 1st race is this Sun, but I am RC. The boat is still hibernating in its cocoon, I will take pics when I put it back together. PM me with your e-mail.

Warbird:
I put a spin on a H17 a few years back and made a small report about it (totally forgot I did that btw <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />).

THanks for that. IT is all in my files. I have a question about the spinny luff. It seems to be very baggy. Did you end up taking the tang further up the mast?

It does look baggy but that was mostly because the sail was old and baggy/full to begin with (new spi's are much flatter).
With the mainsail on it looked a lot better though since it practically operates as a backstay.

What kind of sail are you putting on it? IMHO an Nacra 17 sail would be best (Nothing to back this up, just from observation).

To be honest I only sailed with it a couple of times and sold it a few months after putting it all together and wouldnt feel (I upgraded to an FX-One, much more suitable for spin sailing anyway).

Chip at Whirlwind makes a mast head spinny for the 17 so I will probably go that way and Hobie Phil has some great results with the 17 I think.
I do not have a jibbed 17 and feel that a spinny would be more fun and result in a lot less spaghetti on board.
My other choice is a hooter which would be very flat.
