American Sailing League - 04/11/08 08:31 PM

After reading their PR blurb... the question arose..

Are 20 foot and under catamarans exciting enough for this kind of event? (probably not!)

Do we crash and burn often enough? (no... we think of those boats as poorly designed)

Is the future for multi's... going to be big boats.. eg the extreme 40's Decision 35's ... or is there a niche for the 20 footers and under that we normally sail?

About the ASL
The American Sailing League was founded by Jeff Causey and Thomas Loughborough, of Causey/Loughborough Racing LLC, as a vehicle to bring Grand Prix 18 Foot Skiff racing to the United States, and offer a platform for a new generation of young American sailors to showcase their talent.

Where sailing has historically been the elusive pastime of an affluent upper class, we see the sport moving toward a younger and broader audience, marked by an all time high in the popularity of youth, high school, and college sailing programs; an all time high in the popularity of major grand prix sailing events, such as the Volvo Ocean Race; and the rise in international popularity of faster, lighter, and more extreme sailboats.

Causey/Loughborough Racing and The American Sailing League have leapt to the vanguard of this revolution, working with San Francisco’s own Skiff Sailing Foundation to facilitate the growth of skiff sailing across the United States, and to fill a major void in the demand for better sailing media, culture, fashion, and direct participation avenues. Attacking the 2008 season with the full weight of over 100 volunteers and affiliates, over 100 years in event and regatta management experience, and the support of a growing international fan base, Causey/Loughborough Racing and The American Sailing League are poised to leave a mark on the sport not soon to be forgotten.

2008

This Summer, the American Sailing League kicks off its inaugural Championship Series at PIER 39 on San Francisco Bay. Racing will take place over two exciting weekends, with teams competing just off pier’s end in 18 foot skiffs. These sailboats are among the fastest and most exciting in the sport today. Their races combine all of the athletic skill and daring of the X-Games with the breakneck speed and spectacular wipeouts of NASCAR.

Skiff sailing has a proven track record of drawing crowds in Countries around the world. We will do the same at PIER 39, bringing the full spectacle of a live sporting event with courses that keep the spills and thrills within close view of pier’s end. Live commentators will provide blow by blow insight to the ringside spectators. Skimming over the top of the water, always inches from disaster, these boats will spark both the interest and awe of seasoned sailors, and the wonder and curiosity of a general audience.

Working with the Skiff Sailing Foundation, we will also present a youth regatta in the Olympic training skiff, the 29er, as part of the day’s racing activities. We’ll showcase these high school sailors in their own, high speed craft as the future of the sport of sailing.

In addition to the live show, the 2008 championship series will be taped for air on niche market cable television, online sailing television, streaming web feeds, and a DVD release. Stay tuned...

Yes 18 foot skiffs are poorly designed. That's why a number of us cat people call them swimming platforms. Maybe we should challenge those bozos to a race.
