Greenhorns sailing in Qingdao - 2008 Training Camp Qingdao China June 2008′ - Australian Sailing Team

No this image hasn’t been photoshopped, this is what it looked like as the Australian Sailing Team trained for the Beijing Olympic Games.

Seems that someone forgot to mow the lawn!

From Sail-World by Laura Baldwin

240 boats try and remove sea-weed from the Qingdao Olympic course area

Australia’s 470 Coach, Victor Kovalenko shared these photos and insight from the current training camp in China.

‘As you can see we have one more problem in Qingdao apart of light wind and strong current, it is seaweed. The local government has employed 240 fishing boats to clean Qingdao bay and they are working really hard but… Sailing is almost impossible now!’

Other days the fog has been so thick that a GPS has been needed to find the way back to shore.

470 stars Nathan Wilmot & Malcolm Page probably didn’t think they would be sailing in conditions like these when they named their boat ‘Dead Calm!’

How could the IOC let this happen to our sport…???

I think a crew mutiny is more likely to cause you to go over in three knots of breeze .... Or you go crazy and jump overboard.

(I still think the Tornado team that finds an 80 or 100 lb crew will win)

Re: Qingdao Carpet? - 06/27/08 02:23 PM

The Scuttlebut write-up says this is "blue-green" algae, which is the same stuff that was in the lake where I sail last year; and all the local health departments said it was too dangerous for swimming or boating. It wasn't nearly as dense here as those photos show, yet they were cautioning against any contact with the water. It scared a lot people off the lake all summer. I still sailed in it, but I always showered immediately afterwards.

From what I've heard, the whole place (China's industrial zones) is one big toxic landfil. I've heard that several of our Olympic Equestrian team members will -not- bring their expensive horses to the games, so they are in effect boycotting the competition, this is in regards to the heat and smog which they feel could do permanant harm to their horses.

Anyone installing sharp blades on the leading edge of rudders and daggerboards? Tornados would need them in the bow too.

Judgement Day?

Earthquakes, pollution, floods and now locusts! When shall we expect the return of SARS (plague!)?

This article says it's "basically" cleaned up.

Guess the competitors and coaches are about the only ones who know the truth out there....

I read a blurb the other day, on SA I think, that said the sailors were told to stay off the water. More pollution issues???

Copied from thread on the SA forum:

This is from the German news agency:

The organizers of the olympic sailing reagtta in Qingdao (BOCOG) have declared the olympic courses as prohibited zone by 8 tomorrow morning (Tuesday). The announcement, sent to all national bodies, included no reasons and no limit. This was confirmed by the sports director of the german Federationm Hans Sendes. Specualtions in QIngdao are that the organizers might choose harder weapons in their fight against the blossom of the algues.

Then the algae mutates into flesh eating creatures that stomp buildings.

China: Qingdao is algae-free
By By the Associated Press
Posted Tuesday, July 15, 2008 6:45 AM ET
SHANGHAI, China(AP) - The site of the Olympic sailing competition is clear of the bright-green algae that until recently had covered the sea off the city of Qingdao, a Chinese official said Tuesday.
The Chinese government had set a goal of clearing the sailing site by Tuesday.
"Now it's totally different from several days ago. It's hard to find the green algae, especially in the Olympics sailing site,'' Wang Haitao, vice president of the sailing committee for China's games organizing committee, told the Associated Press by telephone.
The sea-blanketing algae bloom, which officials blamed on natural causes, had disrupted practice for the more than 30 Olympic sailing teams already on site.
To save the site for next month's Olympics, the Chinese government in past weeks called on thousands of soldiers, volunteers and fishing boats to help remove the algae.
While the site of the Olympic competition is clear, the cleanup continues outside the barrier of fishnets and canvas that's being used to keep the algae out of the competition area.
"Yesterday, we sent out 1,700 fishing boats to search for algae over the whole sea area in Qingdao, but they only got 10,000 tons,'' Wang said. "Compared with days before, that's big progress.''
Thirty-seven national teams are now training at the Olympic site, he said.
Some of the athletes are reporting success as well.
"We are happy to report that the algae outbreak seems to have been successfully tackled by the hundreds of dedicated ships, fishing boats and thousands of workers,'' American sailor Carrie Howesaid on her team's Web site Monday. "Efforts have even extended to a seemingly endless floating boom to protect the waters of Fusan Bay.''
