Other hobbies?

Other hobbies? - 07/03/08 03:18 AM

Obviously we all do something other than waste our lives at work, and play on sailboats. What do some of you folks do for entertainment other than sail?

I ride motorcycles, jet skis, I've got a kite I really like, shooting is a huge hobby for me as well. And my pickup. I love my big dumb redneck diesel pickup truck.

Re: Other hobbies? - 07/03/08 03:48 AM

I used to be into jeeps and rock crawling. Not so much anymore. One morning I woke up and decided it wasn't for me and put the jeep on craigslist.

I used to do a lot of rowing. Bow seat in a quadruple scull. Haven't been doing that because of asthma issues.

I think I might actually buy a laser to toy with. I like the way they can tack on a dime. That and the H16 is sometimes too much for me to singlehand in heavy gusts. Two boats are better than one!

growing things; lots of hops
fixing up old things; catamarans, old cabins, ancient brass stoves etc.
making beer, on ancient old kero stoves
drinking beer at mountain cabins after sailing, and before, in fact everyday, even when not sailing

shoot stuff. Lots of stuff. Pellets to .338Mag from 10 ft. to 1000 yds

Probably the only sport you can complete in an hour or less without having to hook up a trailer, assemble anything, or spend a lot of time looking for a good spot.

Used to windsurf, scuba, surf, bigboat sail, and lots of other expensive hobbies. Then came the kids...

I also enjoy shooting stuff! I try to compete in as many bullseye tournament's as possible. The AK is for fun and not very accurate at all.

Re: Other hobbies? - 07/03/08 03:49 PM

I also Love to modify old Datsuns...This is my Current "Street car" and to the untrained eye it appears to be quite stock. When i give her a little gas you hear the massive spool of the Turbo, I hit the purge button and then lay on the nitrous! Ive out run new c6zo6's, 911 Turbo's, and just yesterday put the smack down on a new Viper!
Mods: Metanol injection, Huge Trubo, Huge intercooler, 100shot of nitrous, drag radials all the time, etc.

Re: Other hobbies? - 07/03/08 05:02 PM

Skiing when ever I can afford to take the whole family away.
playing with fast cars; saving up for a Lotus
Lego and Geomag (with the kids of course )
Building the odd boat bits
Running the SCHRS management group
Fleet captain at the sailing club
Juggling and falling off my Unicycle

Oh, and playing with other peoples money for a job.

In my youth (before real responsibilities)

Bridge jumping, absailing, downhill mountain biking - go to a ski resort in the summer(winter was fun too), talk nicely to the lifties and take the bike up the lifts; "cycle/bounce/fall back down the ski-runs or mountain passes. Try not to die.....

I'll play:

water skiing
fixing the cabin (in Sault Saint Marie, MI)
maintaining my handful of rental properties
and of course, spending time with my wife and kids

Turbocat- Don't you just cringe when people talk up the AK? Reliable, yes, but that's about where it ends. I just built a Volquartsen 10/22, I don't know that it was worth the expense but it is an extremely nice rifle. I can't afford to shoot much more than .22 with the way ammo prices have been going through the roof.

If you're into Z-cars this should give you a chubby. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hm-hhtaCzwc

I had a 76' 280Z, maybe 78', it was ten years ago and it was a rust bucket. I was 16 when I had it. I've always regretted selling that car. Which is almost the only car I've regretted selling.

Lets see....
We have four horses; two thoroughbreds, one Hanoverian and one Trakehner. We do three day eventing (dressage, cross country and stadium jumping).

I also race RC sailboats and will soon have a 1/10th cracker box (building from scratch).

When I have time I like to waterski and snow ski.

They are a scale version of a larger boat. They are raced in 1/10th and 1/4 scale.

Sadly most of hobbies are wind related.

Stunt kites
Landyachting
Sailing all kinds of different boats from yachts to dinghies (but mostly cats)

Have build/am building stuff in all three categories as well. However, I still have to arrange for a new sewing machine and finish that "matras" type stunt kite I had started on a while ago.

Other hobbies I do very regulary (daily/weekly):

Squash
Cycling
Reading up on history and (international) politics (do that alot actually)
Art-house movie cinema (I was a volunteer for many years in this field, still my best friends there)

I'm currently trying to get back into kayaking recently, some coastal trips and playing in the surf. Not much white water in my flat homeland.

Ahh yes, good old Darius! That car is totally different now. It retains the procharged LT1 but it's really alot cooler now than it was in that video. Darius's video has led alot of people in the v8 direction, including myself. I am very pleased with all my Volquartsen components, but most of them are trigger related. I still had to do some deep jewel work to get it perfect though. I really want to build a 10/22 to start shooting silhouette tournament's. If you have any 10/22 suggestions let me know via PM. Also if your interested i can pm you the links to Darius's build threads.
It sounds like we have a lot in common!
We gotta get you in a Z again. Check this video out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3qOWw2s-QM

Piddling with all things mechanical - latest project - souping up my 2 stroke 50cc scooter (one seized 70cc top end and a worn variator so far). This afternoon I put in a remote start on my wife's car. Tomorrow brings a little RV maintenance.

Is it a Zuma by chance? I've owned two, both of which were modded. 70cc kit, pipe, carb, varator, speed clutch. Scooters are the best! There were a bunch of us who had them a few years ago. Downtown Minneapolis the Police didn't bother us once. It's nice to go to an area where the law enforcement have better things to do than pick on kids with scooters.

The two most important things are the speed clutch, (an adjustable cintrifugal clutch and the varator) These things don't have much power and that is the key to keeping it in the powerband and using what little power you have all the time. Mine would get up to almost 60mph. The kid I sold mine too got 63mph out of it. But he was more abusive than I was, I don't like holding a 2-stroke WOT for as long as it would've taken to get it going that fast.
