2008 NASS Race to Oxford

Posted By: Chris9

2008 NASS Race to Oxford - 07/31/08 12:58 PM

Come join us. An open beachcat start is included in this race. We are the last ones to start and we try to be the first to finish passing 170+ monos on the way. Nacra 20s are the largest open beachcats sub fleet. Tygart Racing, the NACRA-20 of Doug Kirby and Andy Herbick reset the fastest elapsed time record, beating their own record from the previous year!

I'm in. It's always fun picking off million dollar lead sleds.
It'd be nice if some other folks(I will name names) would come out and play. How 'bout it Trey, Tad, Trey's roommate with the great looking boat, Jake, Chris Z., and a bunch of others I'll leave nameless (you know who you are).Gather up your B***S and make the drive. Let's put a swarm of cats on those monos.
Word on the street is there might even be some A cats racing if it's not blowing the dogs off chains.
Tawd
p.s. Tad I'm countin' on you for most creative excuse, and where my rings, beeeeaahhccchhh.

I'm working on it. If my crew's in, then I'm in.

And Todd, your rings are going out tomorrow.

Is there more than one Annapolis to Oxford race?

My father seems utterly convinced that the race is happening this coming weekend.

Re: 2008 NASS Race to Oxford - 08/01/08 05:36 PM

The big race this weekend is the Governor's Cup. That starts tonight outside of Annapolis and runs to Saint Marys. No beach cat start on that race, although in the past I think some have shadowed it. There is a multi hull class, bunch of beach cat locals crewing on those.

Tad,
Any chance of you sharing with me where you found the rings? I have looked everywhere and no luck. The supply has seemed to have just dried up...

Hey Phillip,
Me Too, I looked and looked.I did find a nice aluminum one that I have on the A cat for now. These were his old ones.Ya wanna sell yours?
You oughta come up and do this race. There will be a bunch of I-20s . Come on and bring it.

Re: 2008 NASS Race to Oxford - 08/02/08 01:28 AM

Just found out my crew is going to be flying to Greece or something that weekend. I'm in the process of finding a replacement :P

As for the rings, I bought them at the local REI. They were just "titanium belaying rings" and were like $5 a pop. I can't find them on their website anymore, and I can't find them locally anymore, so I'm willing to bet they aren't made anymore. I just sent the last three of them I had to Todd.

Re: 2008 NASS Race to Oxford - 08/03/08 03:43 PM

Todd and Tad,
I haven't given up on the rap rings. I've been talking with the head procurement/distribution guy at REI and the folks at Campmor and we are trying to locate some NOS. On Monday I will be speaking with the manufacturer that has supplied the rings to see if there is any stock or to consider the option/costs to get more made. I wonder if there is enough interest here to justify an order ??

Re: 2008 NASS Race to Oxford - 08/03/08 03:53 PM

Philip:

I personally don't prefer them to the EZ-grab rings. They weren't big enough for me to get a paw on to get them out of my hook when tacking, so I ditched them. Todd on the other hand loves them as apparently you do too.

Re: 2008 NASS Race to Oxford - 08/04/08 12:55 AM

Hey Philip,
I'm in for 9 or so.Let me know if you get anywhere. I talked to some manager type at REI and they said they didn't think they would get anymore in, but that was as far as I got.
Now that you've got a boat and all ya need to come do this race. We used to race through the same fleet on the old Chesapeake 100 , and it was a blast using the big monohulls for a slalom course. Plus there is this little itty bitty party when you get there. So come on and do it and bring some others with ya.

What is so special about this ring?

Just a titanium ring. its a pretty decent size and its light as a feather.

Re: 2008 NASS Race to Oxford - 08/04/08 04:37 PM

what was the cost? I know where to get some but they're pricey.
Posted By: ThunderMuffin

Re: 2008 NASS Race to Oxford - 08/04/08 04:39 PM

mine were like $4. The were belaying rings.

They seem to be hollow. However, even with my "heft" I wasn't able to dent them. They seem more than up to the task but I don't know how much I'd trust them if subjected to the elements for a long time.

$4 !!!?!!! FOR A TITANIUM RING? My source was more like $45 each but I see now that they are discontinued.

Re: 2008 NASS Race to Oxford - 08/04/08 06:01 PM

Yeah man.

My wife went and bought like 6 of them. Lost all of them but 4. 1 of which Philip got for lending me a pin at Spring Fever and I just bagged up three of them for Todd.

Back on Topic ....

The NASS Race : Annapolis to Oxford, Starts at R2 (Annapolis/Severn River) .... Finishes at R2 Tred Avon (Oxford) It is the outstanding event w/ usually 150+ "Big Boats". W/ a HUGE PARTY!!!!! The crews of the A0 boats have mellowed over the years and now cheer their "Little Brothers" as the beach cats charge by .... even "DONNYBROOK" !!!!

Mark Schnieder and I were the FIRST Beach Catters to do the event on Mark's Tornado .... unfortunately both him and I will not be able to do it on a beach cat this year .... We will be on TRIPLE THREAT, a 43' Corsair Tri ... we start 5 mins in front of the Beach Cats ... last year two I20's managed to pass us ... Kirby and Sievert .... so come and give it a Go ....

And who owns I20/RUDEE'S .... you owe me a BEER ... you didn't pull your boat up high enough for the incoming tide at Governor's Cup/St Mary's .... as tired as I was ....

For photo's of the Governor's Cup go to "photoboat.com" and pull up TRIPLE THREAT ... there are some awesome pic's ... notice the Thunderstorms come in at the finish ... that sky is "Black" not blue

If you wish to see pic's of the same fleet that will be in the NASS Race go to "photoboat.com" ... look at the "highlights" ... then go into the individual boat index and look for "Rudees", "Triple Threat", "Triangle", "Temple of the Wind" ... the photographers took some great pic's of the Multi's!!!!

In the Triple Threat shots take a look at the pic's of the finish ... you will see a great shot of a handsome devil (sic) holding onto the port shroud, notice the sky in the background (grey) ... then look at the pic from behind looking in the other direction.... see the color of the sky??? That was what we were looking at .... I'm going to call it "Trouble Is A-Coming!!!! It hit us just as we crossed the finish line ... we were soaked to the skin in seconds!!!

Re: 2008 NASS Race to Oxford - 08/06/08 02:46 AM

You found them!!!!

How do you like the soundtrack in in Oxford Race-Inter20 ... that was/is the actual wind ... we were doing approximently 14kts when Don Sievert charged by us ... Zaraffa was maybe 200-300yds behind us both as we had just passed her before the turning mark into the Choptank ... she was waiting for the last leg (upwind on the Tred Avon to BOUNCE !!!! and is she an upwind machine!!!!!) When we had passed Zaraffa, surfing down her HUGE stern wave, under chute we hit 21kts .... or 24mph if you preferr!!!!

WOOF WOOF WOOF

FYI: the pic's I referred to above @ "photoboat.com" are The Governor's Cup 08' ... there are a couple of Rudee's w/ the setting sun behind that are FANTASTIC!!!!

Harry
Posted By: HMurphey

Re: 2008 NASS Race to Oxford - 08/06/08 03:13 AM

Chris,

You are semi correct .... That picture is from Triple Threat's **** on the last leg, a beat up the Tred Avon River w/ Don Sievert still leading Zaraffa ...( Zaraffa had pounced on us !!!) ... Don is approximent 1/4m from the line w/ Zaraffa 1/2m .... Donnybrook and Kirby had battled to the Finish Line w/ Kirby leading then Kirby's rudder's popping up on the last tack and Donnybrook crossing in front by INCHES!!!!

I was speaking to Donnybrook's navigater after the "Solomon's Race" in Mid July ... you could tell he considered the "beach catters" as tough fellow competors .... equals .... and had enjoyed the battle: win, lose, or draw

So Donnybrook recieved "Line Honors" but since the "Beach Cats started 10 mins AFTER the A0 boats ... Kirby actually had the fastest time and set a new course record!!!!

Zaraffa started 5 mins before us and finished 4 mins in front so we had a faster elapsed time then Zaraffa by 1 min!!!!

In that pic did you notice something???? ..... That's a mast rotator arm you see in the forground .... Triple Threat carries a +60ft Carbon Fiber Rotatable Mast!!!!

For the NASS Race this year we'll have a NEW JIB and better crew then last year ( more Beach Catters) w/ more sailing time on the boat!!!

Harry
Posted By: Chris9

Re: 2008 NASS Race to Oxford - 08/06/08 03:58 AM

huh? Semi correct? Let me help my semi correct-ness a little. That is not Don Sieverts N20 infront of Zaraffa. Don's N20 was already on the beach as the second in class and the third across the line. Don's N20 is also white with blue decks. The attached picture should show you the color of the N20 in front of Zaraffa at the finish. We were in a little tacking duel with Zaraffa. I remember them being on port with us double trapped on starboard and me crew looking at me and what he said "are they going to duck us?" They did, but it was a pucker moment forsure. So check the picture again, Gertie is green, a very nice green (well it grows on you), and Geronimo is white, even very white.

Incidentially, there had better be some meat balls in TAYC this year. Dinner, breakfast I don't care, just get on it.

Please just consider the above a selfish "Bump". Join us if you can, ask any question you have?

Re: 2008 NASS Race to Oxford - 08/06/08 03:20 PM

Chris,

My apologizes .... I missed you going by us .... I had my head down busily grinding away on the main-traveler. What did you do? round the "Spider" mark and stay left in the shallow water? We were so focused on Zaraffa you went by w/o me realizing it. We were making TWO BIG boat handling mistakes we realized later that caused us to have "issues" tacking; first was we were not pushing the mast rotator over/through and locking it in place ... secondly this caused us to have to dump the main traveler and it would take forever to GRIND the traveler back up to center!!!! We have modified our tacking procedure w/ (2) people working the rotator and kicking it through (1/side)... this means we only drop the traveler 12" and then grind it up .... we are now much quicker tacking and axccelerating back up to speed!!! I can't say that we would beat Zaraffa to the line now ... but they will have to battle much harder and we would have been a heck of alot closer!!! (they steamrolled us like the 5:10 Express!!!) It was the first time any of us except Tim Lyons/owner had sailed/raced the boat!!!

Practice ... Practice ... Practice

We "beach catters" need too get together, you schedule the party ... I'll make the meatballs (you should try my Lasgna!!! John McL will refuse Steak and eat it instead ...)

Chesapeake Catamaran Open Class Flags:

I will check the CRAC Trailer tomorrow (Sat 9/6) that is currently located at Rock Hall YC .... I've checked w/ Mark Schnieder and we believe there is some "Class Flags" in the trailer. If there are any flags availible the cost is $25.00ea ... Please note these are custom flags designed by John McLaughlin and made for CRAC (FYI: "Code Flags" at West, Fawcetts, and APS are $28-$30ea). I will be in Annapolis on Friday night before the NASS Race so you can arrange to meet me then, (and buy me a Yuengling Lager).

And "NO" ... you do not need to check in before 9:00am .... just before your start time.

It is best to arrive in the starting area BEFORE your start time leaving PLENTY of time to get to the check-in boat among all the boats and confusion. The check-in boat is usually located approximently 500yards away from the starting line.

Short History of CBYRA's "MARK X"

Severn River "R2" is famous among mono-hullers as for many years, it has been the Rendezvous point for most (maybe all) of the events held in Annapolis including all the J-Boat races, Annapolis Race week etc !!!!!

So when you speak/converse w/ mono-huller racers just mention to them ... "Yah, I've started at "Severn R2" ... we did the NASS Race ... ON A BEACH CAT!!!!!"

I'll see ya there along w/ Mark Schnieder, Rob Lancaster, Aric Euler ... just look for the biggest Tri in the multihull fleet ...

See ya at the BEER WAGON after the race!

Are you calling for three years in a row of blasting conditions??

What was your sacrifice?

That would be more than three years, wouldn't it? (Isabel?)

Hey Chris,
I'm gonna try and get out of here about 6 am, which should put me up your way around noon or early afternoon. I just bought a Garmin Nuvi 255w for the trip so if this technologically challenged redneck can figger it out , I'll be all good. I've got the addy in,so hopefully we'll be on track.
Swirling 0-2 sucks!!! SW Sat. - Nw Sunday ain't a kite lovers dream either.Just gotta make the best of it.
Look forward to seein' everybody.

159 registered - still one Nacra 20 expected to register. The first A Classer has signed on. The Beach Cat Class is vying for the largest class honors in this traditional leaner event.

Maybe I like this forecast because it is more optimistic than yours:

"SAT - SW WINDS 10 TO 15 KT. WAVES 1 TO 2 FT. A CHANCE OF
SHOWERS.

SAT NIGHT
SW WINDS 5 TO 10 KT. WAVES 1 FT OR LESS. A CHANCE OF
SHOWERS.

SUN
SW WINDS 5 TO 10 KT. WAVES 1 FT OR LESS.

SUN NIGHT
W WINDS"

Call me when you get close,

Go cats!

The forecast changes with each update, here's the latest:
SAT
W WINDS 5 TO 10 KT. WAVES 1 TO 2 FT. A CHANCE OF SHOWERS.

SAT NIGHT
S WINDS 5 TO 10 KT. WAVES 1 FT OR LESS.

SUN
S WINDS 10 TO 15 KT. WAVES 1 FT...BUILDING TO 2 TO 3 FT IN
THE AFTERNOON.

SUN NIGHT
SW WINDS 10 TO 15 KT. WAVES 1 TO 3 FT.

A reaching race to the Choptank - maybe I'll pull out the old 6.0...

Re: 2008 NASS Race to Oxford - 09/15/08 04:46 PM

SLOW day on Saturday; with a very-shortened course and a RC who scattered the whole fleet as they led them south before starting. The cats tried their own start and then (most) restarted further south on the official line. Upwind all the way; everyone just barely finished in a dying breeze around 5 PM. Took about 2 hours for the first cats to catch the tailend (that would be us) of the big multi fleet that started 5 minutes earlier. GREAT race coming back on Sunday in nice wind; mix of upwind, reaching, and a long downwind leg to finish. I've got some short video clips of a few boats zipping along that I hope to get online later. Conditions were much more to our liking, we could let the big dog run :-)

Re: 2008 NASS Race to Oxford - 09/19/08 02:13 PM

Here's a video I stuck out on YouTube of the Saturday race. I'll have one for the Sunday race a little later. The vid is a little long and slow, just like the race...

By the way, the Capital had Lefur winning on Saturday. I think they goofed. Alex and us actually had a tight battle for last N-20, they edged us at the line. In the video you hear two beeps from the committee boat as we cross, the first beep was for Client #9.

Yup

Been on the Tred Avon when it was like that more times than I care to remember.

Hope you waved hello to my grandparents as you got towed past their house

Rats - I was hoping for some kind of magic voodoo time warp thingy that might have transformed our pathetic result into something stellar. Oh well...

Yeah.. But you have to admit...

Client #9 is one of the best boat names in the fleet!

People will remember this boat!

Except that the Capital even got that wrong - they called it "Clint #9"!

Nice video, exactly as I remember it.Did you take any on Sun.?
I had a blast with everyone. I didn't know light air could be that fun. I hope all of y'all can make it down for our races down here. We party a little harder cuz the wind blows a little harder.

OK, I finally uploaded the video from the Hammond Memorial Race. Still not riveting, but better than the drift fest of Saturday!
