What wall thickness for 1.5" spin pole?

Im making a spin pole and was wondering what thickness was acceptable? I read online in a article that 1.6 mm tubing would work? If anyone has any ideas let me know. i can get alot of different wall thicknesses.

1.6mm is the stock Capricorn pole. Just bought some 0.065-inch in SoCal for $3.75/foot - that's 1.65mm. You'll need to find someplace to anodize it.

If your spin pole is only 1.5" long, I doubt thickness will be an issue! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Andrewscott: But what snuffer are you running? I have purchased a Tiger Snuffer system (midpole) and will be running it on my 5.2 . I already have a 2" pole but since ive never really tried mounting a tiger snuffer im not sure if it would work with the 2" pole? If it will work with the 2" pole i will go that route but since i dont have it yet im not sure if it is even possible.

You should use what the Tiger system calls for.

I use a Capricorn snuffer (mid pole) with a Tornado sail. the bag is longer than the f-18 version (to fit a biger sail)

I am starting to have second thoughts about my pole diameter.. Perhaps it is 1.5".. i will take a look at lunch and report back

I just found out i cant get it in one peice. So two 6' peices is all i will be able to do. Can i use two 6' pieces with a pipe the size of the ID tacked inside one of them leaving about a 6" peice sticking out to join the two together?

I wouldn't go with a sleeved two-piece section unless I had to. The tubing comes in 20-foot or 24-foot sections, so getting a 12-foot piece cut should be no problem. When I needed it, I just did a Google search for aluminum tubing in my town, then got on the phone. Second place I called had exactly what I needed.

You can go with a two-piece, sleeved pole if you have to, of course, but it will be heavier and more complicated. Or, as others have said, pick up an old F2 windsurfer mast at a garage sale or on Craigslist.

Maybe my reading comprehension is not good - what are you putting this spin onto?

Yeah, you don't need a 12-footer. In fact, I would contact the F17 fleet and pick up one of the old-style EO snuffers and a used two-patch 'chute - they've all graduated to smaller-diameter mid-pole setups and flatter, three-patch spinnakers, so I guarantee someone has it for cheap, sitting in the garage. Drop it straight onto the rig you have and enjoy the simplicity. Both the 5.0 and the 5.2 take a chute really well, hence the recent success of the Nacra 500 Sport. Here's a 5.0 with an Inter 17 EO snuffer circa 1998.

I got the Hobie Tiger midpole system and a F18 small cut Spin. I was looking into the eo system but saw the trend moving towards the Tiger midpole and spin so i went that route. I will PM andrewscott about his pole length. Do you know the length of the tiger pole by chance? I would assume it would be the same length i need?

Pole update: Called a freind who is in the Race car fabrication business and he has a 20' stick of the pole material and is only about 10 minutes from me! Going to pick up a stick tonight!

Let me disclaim all my info with this: I am very new to the world of spinnakers. I just got my first pole/spin in feb. bag launched for a few months and then got my snuffer. So i can tell you what i know... but i can't promise i know anything!

I know for sure my pole is 12' long. i am pretty sure its 2" dia... but could be 1.5. i didnt get a chance to check at lunch.

Just because the hobie tiger f-18 uses a 12' pole doesnt mean its the right size for you... (i think)

I am currently flying a Tornado Spin…. And I am having a WORLD of troubles snuffing it… I have a few more changes to try… but about ready to burn it and go back to an F-18 (even though other mystere 5.5’s around me fly a Tornado spin)

AS far as “drilling holes in your bow’s”… I think you MUST have a bridal for the spin pole and at the tip of your bows is where you will have the most vertical angle. I THINK if you tried to tied to the jib bridal your angle would be horizontal and you run the risk of your pole inverting under strain… That could be VERY bad….

You should drill the holes at the TOP of your bow’s… not the bottom (just teasing)… but you should talk to people with knowledge in the proper way to drill/seal as you don’t want just open glass / hulls (mine came ready for a spin)

I added a chute to my 5.8 recently. The holes in the bow are pretty easy - just drill, pack with epoxy putty and then drill a smaller hole through the putty once it sets. Can't recollect what size the holes are, but i can check if you're interested.

For the pole length, I wouldn't cut it until you test-rig the boat. Leave it at 20' in length, but rig the boat as if it was 12' in length. Then run the chute up and see how things look. Don't cut it until you get things looking right. For the record, the pole on my 5.8 is 12.5' long, 0.065 wall T6061.

I didn't drill holes in my 5.2 bows, and I have no problem. Everything is going back to the bridal attachment points. The pole is rock solid, I can lift the boat with it and it's not moving up or sideway at all. I did induce quite a lot of camber on it however, just to be on the safe side.

I guess i should have said, on my boat i think you would have to drill holes.... as my forstay bridal is about 2' behind the tips of the bow's... since i don't sail a 5.2 i am not sure about your needs

Pepin, what size pole are you using? 1.5" diameter 0.065 wall (~38 mm, 1.6 mm wall?) aluminum? Or something beefier?

The pole is some kind of alu pole I found in the grass on the ground next to my boat when I bought it. I have no idea where it came from, but it's doing the trick <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. I'll try to take some pictures this week end, and I'll bring a tape measure as well so I can answer your question about width and wall size because I have no idea...


The bridal points are at the same place on a 5.2, give or take a few inches.

Here are the dimension of my pole:

- Diameter: 30mm
- Length: 3m18
- I have no idea about the thickness, around 2mm? See the pictures
