Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/11/08 03:51 AM

Does anyone know the television schedule to see any of the Olympic Tornado coverage? If so, please share.

Thanks, Doug

Did not see any on regular TV just the online coverage. Rick got me to the links from his post.

http://www.nbcolympics.com/tv_and_online_listings/zone=PT/sport=SA/index.html

Check TV Listings and Online Listings on the page. I guess you can get it on your plasma TV from the online coverage if you have the correct hardware. Way beyound my capabilities but watching it on the computer is great.

Is the online coverage only live or are races saved on the site too?

you can watch the coverage again - click the "Rewind" link in race and it will play the footage.

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/12/08 12:35 PM

Also note that the only television coverage (so far) is on whatever classes are racing on the "Alpha" circle - the one closest to the harbor.

Peter Reggio (Luigi) is the PRO for the Ynglings and Finns.
PU is the PRO for the 49ers, Stars and Tornados. He had lots of TV time a couple of days ago.
Nino Shmueli (from Israel) is the PRO for the RS:X's and 470's
Ross Wilson (AUS) is the PRO for the Lasers.

For the race management fanatics, Charlie Cook's blog is pretty good reading - Charlie Cook's Blog

And yes, it's the same Charlie Cook that proposed the change in voting procedure at last November's ISAF Meeting that resulted in the multihulls being eliminated from the 2012 Olympics.

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/13/08 06:17 PM

Tornados start thursday - if they are on A course you will see the whole race online - if they are not on A course then we will most likey get some very limited coverage.

Good to see Luigi on the RC boat - AC, TP52 Globals, MEDCUP, Olympics, Acura KWRW and on the F18 course at the Seattle NOODs - the guy is everywhere...

I think this olympics has the worst TV coverage I've seen, Phelps is a great swimmer but I don't need to hear about it every time I turn on NBC.

After 2:00PM there now - watched the parade of little boats being towed back in. Gotta sleep. I'll tape my fingers in the crossed position for some good racing.

It's fake breeze, like in the opening ceremony flag poles.

With all the trouble the Chinese have gone to (amazing new buildings, removing weed, turning off industry to reduce smog etc..., I wonder why they didn't have some barges with giant fans to create some breeze for the sailors! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/15/08 07:39 AM

There's still postponement, but saw some live onboard footage and the T's where double trapping upwind.
Even trapping downwind actually.
I can watch it live here in holland, it probably wont work in AUS due to the curse of DRM but you can try anyway:

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/15/08 09:23 AM

wind has lightened for the race...8-9knots at the first 4 roundings,

Just caught a glimpse of USA between Star boats. They did NOT have the Chupacabra Code Zero out going up hill in light wind (hull flat). They are back in 12th.
What's that about?!?

It's over. Leader board still hasn't updated finish places...but the live comments show ESP taking the bullet...passed GRE on the last upwind. NED (Booth sans code zero) was third!

CAN in 8th. USA lost two spots on the last leg to end up 14th ahead of ITA in last place.

Winds shown at 9 kts at all roundings.

Off to bed!

I have not even found a pay site where I can watch the Tornado racing today. That is simply not good enough in 2008 for an event like the olympics.
BBC have a feed from the sailing, but I have been unable to tap into it, even not through our firewall in the UK.

Yes, for those not getting the feed...you're not missing much really. The coverage was the Star race...100% of the time. Occassionally you could catch a glimpse of the Tornado or two slicing throug the fleet. I had the rounding & results web page on screen beside the viddy to try to follow the actual T boat race. Without that, it would have been not worht looking at the Stars bobbing about.

Here's the link (but right now theres no data coming up for some reason):

Probably the cameras can't keep up with the speed of the Tornados... thats why they follow the slower Stars. Maybe, kinda, sorta!

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/15/08 05:38 PM

Glancing through the replay video on NBCs webpage it is pretty neat to see the Tornado's speed compared to the Stars. Downwind the Star's crew stands facing backward on the foredeck. The Tornado crew were on the leeward side but the speed difference was large. Seemed as though the Tornado had to use the Stars and obstacles. I thought I saw a spinnaker going to weather but cannot be sure. As the wind builds they obviously cannot use it but I thought that in the early part of the race there was one...hope against hope, maybe.

If you are a Star sailor you should video the race. There were some nice close shots of crew work. I hope that they choose the Tornado for at least one race coverage with the same detail, it will be good to have for training video with some editing.

Later,
Dan

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/16/08 06:04 AM

Posted on SA's front page:

Quote
Inauspicious Beginning

Team USA's Toronado sailors Charlie Ogiltree and John Lovell describe their first race. They crossed the entire fleet and then...

We blasted out of the blocks today in the first Tornado race at the Summer Olympics. From there, weather and circumstances conspired to flush us to the back of the pack. We crossed the finish line 14th out of the 15 boats competing but at least we can say we’ve got over our opening night jitters.

After a lack of breeze forced cancellation of our practice race yesterday, we were looking forward to two races today on Course A, in front of the TV cameras and the spectators arranged along the massive breakwater that protects the yacht harbor and Olympic venue. With a 1:00 pm start we left the dock at noon for the short sail to the course. Out on the water the skies were dismal and the breeze very light and fluky. At 1:10 pm the committee signalled a postponement and sent us back to the harbor where we waited ashore until the weather brightened at 3:30 and we were called back out.

Our only race of the day finally started just before 4:30 pm in a puffy, shifty northeaster that was coming off the shore. The race committee had the breeze at nine knots but just before the start it got very light and we had an opportunity to hoist our Chupacabra Code 0 gennaker that’s designed to power us upwind in the light stuff. We made a great start at the pin end, hitting the line on full afterburner with both of us on the trapeze at times, and tacked across the whole fleet and then tacked back again to cover. Everything was working great until about three-quarters of the way to the top mark when the breeze ramped up and was way too strong for our light air sail. We struggled to get it down but were still able to get squared away and around the weather mark in fourth place.

Our first run of the six-lap course was only average and we dropped five places to start the second weather leg in 9th place. On the next beat we sailed into a really big hole and went the wrong way to lose another place before the weather mark. Two boats got past us on the second run and two more on the final run to leave us 14th.

These weren’t the conditions we expected. We only got an opportunity to gain the benefits from our Chupacabra during the first beat. Of course it’s also our downwind sail and smaller than standard spinnakers but we didn’t trade off much there. We just sailed a really poor race, unfortunately. On the other hand it was pretty encouraging to see several boats who are obvious medal contenders finishing right in front of us at the tail end of the fleet.

The forecast for tomorrow is for a light sea breeze, which is what we’ve been planning for. The schedule has been amended to feature three races, starting at noon.

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/16/08 06:10 AM

Hagara from 3rd to 12th on last upwind losing nearly 6 min

ARG from 4th (1.22 down) to finish 1st by nearly 2 min.

GBR looses 8.37 min in one lap

Would have to be very frustrating out there
Posted By: Tornado

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/16/08 06:31 AM

1st race is over.
ARG 1st, FRA 2nd, CAN 3rd!

USA was in 11th on the last lap...but ended up 12th. Must have been another crap shoot out there, big shifts and velocity changes. GBR was in 1st for 4 marks, then ended up 8th at the line.

Mike.

Was this at the last upwind mark. ARG is protesting with AUS as witness. ESP sailed around AUS, ARG and ITA on the last downwind.

Last top mark - AUS first, followed by ARG, ITA then ESP.

Redress granted to ARG. ARG to be given equal points to 1st place. All other scores to remain the same, no boat to be scored in 2nd place.

ARG and ESP now have 2 bullets each, putting them both in the box seat when a drop come into play.

Description:
Since the three requests for redress concerned the same incident, Protest 50, 51, and 52 were heard together. In Race 3, the Race Committee shortened the second windward leg at the end of the first run from 0.9 to 0.7 NM and changed the heading from 120 tot 130 degrees. A course change was signaled at the bottom mark showing 130 degrees and a minus sign. ARG was leading the race and on the layline to the original mark 1 40-50 m ahead of ESP, with ESP slightly to leeward, when the new windward mark was dropped 0.2 NM lower than, and 10 degrees to the right of, Mark 1. AUS was 300 m behind ARG. AUS was slightly above the layline to the new mark. AUS passed the new mark 1 first followed by ESP and ARG, who were both flying spinnakers. ESP finished 1st, ARG 2nd and AUS 3rd. CAN lost one place on the 2nd upwind leg. GER was in 12th position around every mark.

Also heavy rain but that should not stop the sailing

I would not count on Jobson to promote high performance sailing, judging by his comments on the 49er race (which was great fun to watch, boat pitching all over the place, with the Italians and Aussies pitching on the last leg of the race while in Gold and Silver positions...):

"I have been around sailing for a long time. And every time I think I have seen it all something new happens. Today's 49er medal race was simply bizarre. In fact, it was the ugliest race I have seen in my 50 years on the water. Talk about agony, this was agony!"

"The 49er was proving to be un-seaworthy for such harsh sailing conditions, and as fast as it had begun, the race evolved into a demolition derby."

"I am sure there will be plenty of discussion about the use of the 49er for future Olympics."

I would not agree, you are not doing bad. Your Tornado team did a gamble, and appears to have lost, but else you are at the top of the game. Consider the difference in funding and how most of your guys travel to Europe for training and you are doing very well.

When that have been said: Go Bundy and Ashby!!!

Sounds like the kinda guy who thinks Formula 1 races are boring when it rains.

Why are some people "involved" in sailing so afraid of change. I guess they want to hark back to the days of oilskins, very heavy boats and wooden masts - not the future of sailing.

Watching the rewind of Yingling finals, 23:40-25:04.

I have to give credit to the U.S. ladies for sailing to win, even if it didn't work out. They were in a classic "slow down and win position", but chose a more aggressive manuver. Excellent boat handling.

Yingling is a nice boat.

Has there been any video footage of Tornados on the NBC online site? I've scanned through all of the replay videos and haven't seen any Tornado races.

With Gary's comment, does that mean live on NBC tv.

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/18/08 04:12 PM

Once again, the only course (of the five) that is covered on TV is the Alpha course.

The only day that the T's were on it was the first day of their racing (8/14). The brilliant minds decided to cover the Stars that race (they share the course with the T's and start first).

The next chance to see the T's will be their medal race - on Thursday, 8/21.

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/18/08 04:26 PM

PU is running Course E, correct? Meaning, he is not just running races for Tornados, but all fleets that have rotated through Course E over the whole regatta?

Wasn't there some big issue about the T-class only wanting PU to run their races? Seems like someone else would be running them when they're on Course A.

Gary Jobson is an idiot (whoops, did I say that out loud? <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />)

All the medal races are on the Alpha course.

The Laser Men / Women's medal races are Tuesday.
The RS:X Men / Women's medal race are Wednesday.
The Star and Tornado medal races are Thursday.

No T's on TV until Thursday.

Qingdao is 12 hours ahead of Eastern time, 9 hours ahead of Pacific time. It's Tuesday there already.

The RO's generally stay with their classes, not with a specific course. PU was assigned the 49er's, Stars and Tornados. When the 49er's overlapped with the Stars and T's, they went to another RO (Luigi for the medal race).

PU has had a lot of problems with his crew and equipment.

Here's PU's report from Sunday's extreme races:
Quote
On our course we had 18 to 22 all day from the East.

On the way out to the course, against the wind and waves, we took on a lot of water and were sinking. We being the signal boat. Anyway, we were about five miles up the course when we discovered about a foot of water in each hull. In the bow down, stern up position, we looked like a submarine in the dive mode.

Needless to say we did some serious bailing, turned downwind and headed for the harbour with L, Star and Tornado flags flying. We made in and took another signal boat that was on a lay day.

AP was hoisted ashore and dropped at 1200.

My driver was so scared he would only go 2 knots back to the course. This sparked some rather colorfull language from the short, fat, bald man[=PU].

When we got back to the area all the competetors were waiting, We arrived with 16 minutes to the new scheduled start, anchored with 170 meters of chain/line and got into the sequence. Unfortunely we had to AP because of visability. The rain squalls were brutal. After it cleared somewhat we noticed that the pin boat was favored. Guess who was drifting. 20 meter depth. 170 meters of chain and line and we were drifting. We then ran ito the problem of not being able to raise the anchor. Won't go into it, just to say we drifted about 7/10th of a mile. By the time we got back into racing mode, the wind had shifted 90 degrees.
I will spare you the rest, but we did get in one race wherein two Stars broke masts. One of the gates drifted, etc.

Our signal boathas been retired. (There will be a burial ceremony as soon as we can find a stick of dynamite)

I don't see that we have anything to lose, so why not send Jobson's boss a nasty email complaining about the poor coverage.

Like the 49ers, we have big bright spinnakers and offer lots of thrills and spills in big air. Jobson's philosophy is sort of like NASCAR running '50s technology. GJ may not approve of "demolition derby" but the fans seem to love it, especially when the crews keep trying after all is lost!

That makes for great spectator appeal. The "old guard" wishes you still had to retire if you fouled someone or hit a mark.

Remember, the 360 rule came from Hobie.

Why have self-bailing boats if you don't expect to recover from a flip?

In the old days you just sat there and bailed with a bucket, or...in the case of a Star which SANK...you hoped someone would pick you up!

Don't Stars still sink???

Talk about unseaworthy.

....and I love Stars...just want to set the record straight.

Stars and Tornados have been canned for the day. They didn't get a race in at all. The were 4 legs into their first race when they got a big windshift and they were all carrying their spinnakers to the windward leg. They will be pissed .... spent all day on the water and didn't get a race in.

Layday tomorrow, so pretty sure they will be racing.

Forecast for medal race day on Thursday is a bit better I think.

One

Seriously - the NOR says one race will constitute a series... How is that for faith in the selected venue?
Posted By: brucat

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/19/08 06:48 PM

I haven't spoken with PU (or anyone else there), but none of this should be surprising to anyone familiar with major events.

The one race minimum is a pretty standard thing for most events in general, helps with Murphy.

If you look more carefully at the Olympic docs (NOR and SIs), it's pretty obvious that they really wanted a minimum of 6 races for the "opening series" leading into the medal race. They are willing to extend all schedules until this is met, and have provisions in case it can't be met.

With a major wind shift part way through the race, you either do nothing, abandon it, shorten it, or change the course. At this level of the game, decisions are not typically made without consulting with the Olympic reps, judges, etc.

Since they were past the 6 race minimum (implied), there was no compelling reason to continue the race, if shortening or changing were not feasible (due to the location of the front and back of the fleet, etc.).

Just a litle note - there is no provision for shortening course like we have in club racing. Removed so that you can't have a local race officer shorten course when your team is in front. What the race officer can do is shorten the length of the course and indicate C-.

The Aussies need Argentina to do well in the next couple of races. We can't afford for the spanish to get 20 points up on 3rd place. Also the aussies are still carrying the lowest drop so it would be tempting to stow the spanish down in the next race. It becomes a question of gold at any cost or happy with a medal.

If the Aussies and Spanish came last and ARG first you'd end up with

Big risk though if it does not come off. Would need to drive ESP down to the last couple of spots in the fleet to make it worth while. I think they should just cover them at the start and try to keep them behind them. Not let ESP take any more points out on them. They do not want to tie with ESP after the medal race also as ESP have 4 bullets.

I am down to my first knuckles now....That was a big race by AUS. They have just cut ESP's lead from 7 points to 3. They now only have to get one point between them and ESP in the medal race but will have to watch for ARG and GER just behind them.

We are in for a hot race in the medal race..... Hopefully with breeze too.

Top 10

ESP on 26
AUS on 29
ARG on 34
GER on 52
CAN on 57
NED on 58

CAN with 57 has a bronze shot with a little help from GER (52) and ARG (44). Very long shot for silver...if AUS is 10th or worse (DNF) & CAN gets 2nd (done that twice today!) plus ARG & GER down the list.

Right, I was speaking in a more general sense.

I've never really understood the no-shortening provision, seems to protect juries from dealing with unscrupulous PROs at the expense of good, fair PROs, and for that matter, the good of an event. What I mean is, if races are being tossed because they can't be shortened, there is most definitely a negative effect on the leaders of those races.

Granted, everyone competing knows this going in, but to me, this is an ultimate example of tail wags dog. But then again, with all that is accused of going on in judged events (gymnastics, ice skating), this may be a small concession. Of course, if the race were going your way for a medal and got tossed, that would be hard to live with when it is so obvious that there's a viable answer used at the vast majority of other regattas.

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/21/08 03:53 AM

With the Olympics almost over perhaps it is time to reflect on one of the brightest decision made.

In November the Canadians voted to remove the multihull. Now lets look at their Olympic results: RSX Men 23; RSX Women 17; Laser 9; Radial 17; 470 Men 29; Finn 5 Yngling 13, 49er 14

As I write this I don’t know where the Canadian Tornado team will finish but it sure a lot higher than a lot of the disciplines they supported.

How smart is Canadian Yachting Association! Perhaps it needs a board change to reflect what is actually being sailed well in Canada

The Spanish and Argentinians are doing a few victory laps past the pier.
Pretty nasty conditions though (washing machine).

Don't want to sound bitter but the Greeks cost their Aussie training partners any hope of a gold with that start.

Looks like ESP team coaches & family memebers are trying to sink the gold winning boat! 10 Spaniards jumping up an down on the tramp and she's still floating! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Final results - Gold ESP, Silver AUS, Bronze ARG.

You have to wonder about the line/course or whatever, when 9 out of 10 boats in the medal race start on port ....

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/21/08 06:09 AM

Well done ESP. If you win 4 races from 11, you deserve to come away with Gold.

That footage was Gold also. If that does not work in the Multihulls favour to return to the Games, then nothing will.

Bundy / Ashby, well done. It is sad to see arguably the greatest Tornado helmsman there ever was.... Never win a Gold. Bring the T back for London so he can have another crack at it.

"Nasty conditions"???? Looks like what we sail in every weekend, with waves bouncing off marina walls, shipping going by etc, etc. I really need to get out of town more often to go sailing.

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/21/08 08:23 AM

Well done! Paz & Echevarri. Campeones!

It's curious, Spain has a superb Tornado history these recent years. Yet we see at national level:
* the cat scene in decline
* (almost) no Tornados racing
* No relevant international participation (with a couple of exceptions)

The effect of this gold medal is ZERO for spanish cat sailing.

We are proud, of course. But this year nats (in 20 days now for all cats together) we will struggle to achive last year numbers.

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/21/08 09:38 AM

Ok, so here we are at the very formal, very emotional medal ceremony for the Tornado at the Olympic Games. The person presenting the flowers is the ISAF Vice President from Australia, Mr David Kellet. It's pouring with rain, so the medal presenters are wearing very fetching cheap plastic ponchos.

Mr Kellet offers his congratulations to Glenn Ashby, the Silver Medallist from Australia and presents the flowers. The crew then thanks Mr Kellet with the comment "You look like a condom". Lucky the music is loud and the effects mike doesn't pick it up .....

Well gone Glenn.

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/21/08 11:22 AM

Here is PU's last message regarding the race. It explains why everybody started on port.
Quote
Well, thats over.

We did the Tornados first then the Stars.
Set the start line close to the breakwater so that if they started on starboard they could go about 4 tenths before they had to tack. That put them at the media tower at the east end of the breakwater.
The winds were around 15 knots so we set the weather mark at 125 degrees and 1.4 nautical miles. W2 (two laps) with a target time of 30 minutes.
All the tornados except Greece started on Port tack to go out for just one tack to the weather mark. Also there was more presure there. The Greek on Starboard went about 300 meters and ripped his mainsail so had to retire.
We misssed the target time by 20 seconds. (30 minutes and 20 seconds)
Spain won the gold.

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/21/08 11:40 AM

Have the same been done for other classes?
Messing with the starting line in the medal race.. This is not the first time PU oversees a Tornado event, so he knows it is a golden rule to not tack more than you have to. One tack is worth a lot.

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/21/08 12:29 PM

From Andy Rice

It was a dramatic finale for the Tornado class as it made its exit out of the Olympics after 32 years. With a heavily pin-end-biased line, the fleet would have struggled to start on starboard. So all but one of the 10 boats elected to start on port.

The rest of the great report can found here http://sailjuice.squarespace.com/

The short answer is yes. They want the race as close as possible to the spectators on the breakwall - which when the wind is coming from the south east, takes away a big chunk of the course's left side.

You could almost say that the media considerations spoiled Bundy & Ashby's chance to get a gold, rather than the Greeks.

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/21/08 02:45 PM

Also, did you notice how the signal and pin boats were oriented? Instead of pointing into the wind (at 125°), the current was making them point at 215°. That would make port the longest tack to the mark, thus the one you want to sail first. Another reason 9 of 10 boats started on port.

When I saw all the boats lining up for a port start, I was going, "Postpone! C'mon, PU, postpone!". But he let them go.

I guess all you could really do is make the committee boat favored, but then you'd have a huge pileup at that end and the first ones to tack to the right would win.

Mitch Booth said this was the windiest Olympics he has competed at. When asked the same question, Bundock agreed. Qingdao wasn't so bad after all. Another welcome case of that favourite sailing cliche: "It's not normally like this!"

Not according to the Sailjuice quote from AUS:

Quote
Meanwhile the Aussies had got on to the tail of the Spanish and looked in a position to threaten. However they dropped away again up the final beat, as Darren Bundock explained afterwards: "The mast rotator broke and so we couldn't set the mainsail properly so we were a bit slow up that leg." The Spanish pulled away again and finished ahead of Australia, bagging the gold medal.

So, even if GRE hadn't done the Starboard start, it's not a given the outcome would have been any different.

Yes, Jobson was in "fine" form last night:

"Wonder if any of those guys will be sailing 49'ers next time"!?!?

He's got no clue...just because the T & 49'er share an excitement/speed level that his beloved mono's can only dream about doesn't equate them to being the same skill sets to sail competitively.

Comparing the comments made during the Star medal race was a treat....he actually got into the tactics and focused on the teams experience levels during the Star race...didn't seem to know what was going on with the T's or team histories.

Gotta love him for "Don't Stars just look beautiful" comment! All I could think of was don't they look like outdated tubs plowing along.

Anybody discover why GER could not right their boat and keep going? It was on its side for quite a long time...they never did re-join the race.
The carbon mast is easy to right from that position. maybe they got separated for the boat?

I was at a Sailing Youth Clinic in the early 90’s with roughly 20 other sailors (under 20 yrs) who were sailing in Olympic classes or just sponsored into the classes by the national class authority. Gary was the key speaker.

He went around the room and the sailors indicated which Olympic Class they participated in, he then indicated possible coaches, contacts to reach out to, and top equipment manufacturers in the US.

When I indicated that I sailed tornados his response was “Oh – they had some big crashes at the last games (1988)”. Really – that was all he had.

Not trying to bash Gary but it appeared that little has changed from the 1990’s in his eyes. Sad when he is considered the expert to comment on the video - he could have at least put the effort forward to know who was who and who was on form for ALL the classes - That is not to much to ask in exchange for a paycheck from NBC. Hell all he had to do was open any of the UK sailing mags or read the Daily Sail...

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/21/08 07:12 PM

That was a great race! What a day for sailing, perfect for the gold medal. A highlight package should be sent to everyone who voted against the multihull, especially the Canadians, since fourth is the best finish ever in the class for Canada.
Canadian commentary was ok; perhaps a little lacklustre. At least they knew port from starboard.
I guess the video is now a collector's item.

"F" boats are out and if they go that way then they will simply keep the "T" which I wouldn't mind one bit.

Hobie 16 w/ spin in a breeze sailed by the best in the world... come on, you wouldn't watch that? Anything at Qingdao or a venue like Qingdao is going to be a yawn.

Hmmm... watch the races at Qingdao or watch my grass grow... tough call.

Why not bash him? He deserves it...and so does NBC.

And...he can't even spell or perhaps type very well.

Didn't he say on the first day that his mother was a typing teacher so he learned to type at an early age?

And what about the Maritime Academy? Did they realize what a wanker he was?

They did. My first real job was at a shipyard and one of my co-worker/friends went to school w/ Gary.

They had a special nickname for him that played off his name and included the word "blow". <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

My friend did pretty well for himself - left Bath Iron Works and joined the family business Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding.

Re: Olympic Tornado TV Coverage??? - 08/29/08 02:17 PM

I got an e-mail from PU that explained the port start:
Quote
As to why I did not postpone when it was obvious they were going to do a port start. I set up the start line purposely so that they would start on port.
We did the same thing the two previous years for the test events for both the boards and the catamarans on the medal course.
Had they started on starboard they would have hit the breakwater in 300 meters which at the speed they were going would have been very quick. Add to that that like any catamaran, Tornados like to hit the corners. The wind at the start was 17 - 18 knots.
The idea was to get the course as close to the breakwater as we could for the thousands of spectators. This meant elimiating the left lay line, an acceptable procedure under the policy for the event.
We set the weather mark at 1.4 knotical miles Target time was 30 minutes. We missed the target time by 12 seconds. (30 min 12 sec)
The next start was the Stars. Stars dont go to corners so this class was able to start on starboard and short tack up the breakwater which was very special for the spectators and a concideration in laying the start line for both classes.
Many observers (Matt) may not have been aware of what we were trying to accomplish hence his comments regarding a postponement.
The angle that the signal boat and pin boat were laying was fairly normal for this venue.Seldom did the signal boat and pin boat ever lay in the same direction, and even more seldom bow to the wind.
Matt's observation regarding this is somewhat correct they went out, however not because of the position of the starting line. Rather because the current was pushing towards the weather mark, there was more pressure on the outside, there was stronger current outside and at this venue on the inside there are toilet bowl eddies due to shoals that disturb the current flow and finally there was a restriction on the inside.
On a finishing note, television pays 8 million dollars for the rights to this event. If they want the course next to the spectators, ISAF agrees even if it elimiates a left layline. Team leaders, Coaches and Athletes are well aware of this policy and accept it. We as race management follow policy.
