Oct 4,5 - Outback Cup, Columbia SC - Whose in?

Oct 4,5 - Outback Cup, Columbia SC - Whose in? - 09/22/08 05:31 PM

So they changed it to Buoys both Saturday/Sunday. I'm somewhat bummed, I'd have liked to have gotten to see more of Lake Murray than the little bit we get to see down by the dam - oh well.

Whose coming... Derek? Todd?

4 N20's are already committed...if only we could get Jake off his toy boat we could get a class

Re: Oct 4,5 - Outback Cup, Columbia SC - Whose in? - 09/22/08 06:08 PM

If the N20's want to race down the lake, we can arrange that. Its all about you, you know this....
Dont forget, Carraba's on Friday, and Outback Steaks on Saturday, and I hear a really good band is playing....

And if you really want to see the whole lake, come to the Hangover regatta on new Years. We had a blast last year, rain and all.

Know there are at least 3 F-18 from Hartwell gonna be there. Last I heard Mike was coming to chattanooga for a opti regatta, so any word on DL? Heck he could maybe borrow Nigels A cat and that would give you all 5 As. or if he does the F18 that would be 4 As, 4 I-20s, 4 F-18s, 2 blades and ?. Could be a fun starting line.

You want smack? I took all the a-cats this past weekend 8 for 8 and missed capturing second place, in a portsmouth fleet, from Ollie and Joanna on their well sailed F16 by 1 point. I also found that I had developed a leak in my port hull daggerboard well and had 35 to 45 lbs of water in the hull by the end of the day. The leak is fixed and the hull bone dry now...The tendinitis in my hand should be well enough to sail one more weekend before a break (and my Hand Armor V2 is curing right now)....Your next sucka!

If you're lucky, I'll let you wear my cape.

Re: Oct 4,5 - Outback Cup, Columbia SC - Whose in? - 09/24/08 02:26 AM

As for the alter cup qualifier it was nigel and tammay first on a blade, olley and joanna second and jake third.Have to say jake sailed a damn good regatta, even passed the spin boats downwind (think that was his crews work).
So from reading looks like 5 f-18s, 4 i-20s, 4 a cats, 2 blades, a frakencat HT and ? at columbia.

Just remember that there are state and local ordinances that deal specifically with blades of a certain size and the manner in which they are "displayed, brandished or wielded in a public setting."

You get a lot for $70 bucks... 2 Carrabba's meals on Fri night, 2 honking Outback steak meals on Sat night, plus t-shirt, hat.. and hopefully good wind
Posted By: dave mosley

Re: Oct 4,5 - Outback Cup, Columbia SC - Whose in? - 09/26/08 12:20 AM

If you dont pre-register you may miss out on a Hat, but otherwise all is well with paying on site. Remember though, we feed 400+ people on Saturday night. Never seen them run out of steaks, but I would'nt want to be at the back of the line without a ticket(or a big knife...)

$70 bucks sounds expensive, but if you divide the food, beer, and goodies by 0.015%, then cross multiply and square the sum, then it works out as a good deal.

Since this would be my first regatta I was wondering about class rules and such at the Outback. Your guidance would be appreciated. My Hobie is an 84 with mostly stock gear. I don't have a comptip. Is this a problem?
Are there other Hobie 16's going to be there?
Also it seems that I have read about a minimum weight for crew (285?), is that something that I need worry about? It might be that I would be single handing, and while I'm heavy I'm not that heavy.
If my son were to crew for me he is only 12 years old. Is his age a problem?

Thanks for your input.

And that is a BIG reason we sail w/ the cats instead of cleaning up the keelboat. We are welcome w/ a homemade boat so you have absolutely no worries.

You'll find some single handers and kid crews. I had my 8 year old daughter crew with me on my H16 at the Hatteras Regatta last month. It was great to get her on the boat. There will be plenty of folks around to help you with rigging, advice, etc. The sailing club also has plenty of room for camping. Glad you can make it.

What is the gas situation in Columbia SC?

It's getting very difficult to find a station in Atlanta with gas.

Re: Oct 4,5 - Outback Cup, Columbia SC - Whose in? - 09/27/08 02:16 PM

As I understand it, Greenville SC has gas... at least according to my little sister who goes to Furman.

I read in the AJC that the pipeline is expected back up Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest.

Shouldn't there be some kind of redundancy in these pipelines? Didn't we learn anything from Katrina?

Well...I guess this shows anyone that wanted to attack and heavily impact the US where to start. Are we that dependent on one centralized location for fuel? This is silly.

Re: Oct 4,5 - Outback Cup, Columbia SC - Whose in? - 09/28/08 01:29 PM

I have been in Danville, VA this week and gas is plentiful at $3.59. The shortage seems to be a central NC situation.

It really doesn't make sense.

We're running dry down here in Northern Georgia too.

Drove from to Charlotte and back Saturday/Sunday, and SC for the most part has gas, although they are rationing it. I'm pretty sure NC and GA are "boutique fuels" that have to meet some government-imposed standard.

I'm stuck at a crossroads...I really don't want to and can't afford to wait an hour at the 1 out of 10 gas stations that have fuel. I refused to get in line with the manics and run out and fill up everything they own (and thought that the prices might come back down)...but the truck is on E, the Jetta at a 1/4 tank, the scooter at about 1/8, and my lawnmower empty. The RV has about 1/3 of a tank but I'm not real keen on driving that to work!

Re: Oct 4,5 - Outback Cup, Columbia SC - Whose in? - 09/30/08 01:17 AM

My wife saw a station in Atlanta today where people were lined up in the hope that they would get gas in. They didn't even have gas and people were lining up!
If it doesn't get better I don't think that I can make the trip to Columbia and come home to no gas.

That's because all of the pumps have bags over them so there's nothing to wait in line for. There's no shortage of regular in Raleigh, but driving around in search of higher octane fuel has gotten annoying.

We went through this same situation in 1973. I lived in Key West then and was going somewhere to race almost every weekend. We all were carrying 5 or six 5 gallon jugs in our vans. If we ever wrecked it would have been ugly.

This shortage is temporary, but it could get a lot worse.

I am right now thinking of installing an extra tank in the bed of my truck.

In 1974 I had a Ford pick-up with two 25 gallion boat tanks in the bed. I had a range of about 600 miles. By then there was no shortage but it made it beneficial to price shop and get gas at the best price.

In retrospect, it was probably a pretty lethal situation!

Michael, last time I rode Sugar Mtn downhill, my buddy ended up in the Watauga County ER. The year before I wiped out at high speed and gashed my arm open. There is plenty of camping available around the catamaran beach area.... for RV and tents. They do a great job of providing breakfast (cereal, bagels, fruit, juice and coffee) You are on your own for lunch. I normally pack granola bars and fix peanut butter on bagels for the boat.

You'll want to save your appetite for that big fat juicy steak Sat night.

Re: Oct 4,5 - Outback Cup, Columbia SC - Whose in? - 10/02/08 09:19 PM

Lots of tent space, but really only 5 "campsites"-electricity, picnic table, shelters. We usually have 5 or 6 RV's and 5 or more tents in the designated camping area. There is also a large grassy area right in front of the club for more tent space. The club has 2 bath facilities, total of 6 showers, plenty of porta potties and new bath facilites.
As far as b-fast, there will be continental style b-fast, and hot dogs for lunch(not part of regatta fee, but only $1 each. There are not any public cooking facilites available, but electricity at campsites for griddles and such. we are 1 mile from an exxon station that serves a really good b-fast, and a few miles from anything you want. Sunday the Ladies auxillary cooks hamburges for $5 and it comes with beans, chips, drink and cookies.
Friday night Carraba's throws out a huge buffet with lots of hor devoures, enough to fill up on. Then Outback cooks a mean steak on Saturday night with fries, salad, cheesecake and drink.

Big beach area for cats, bring your beach wheels. Gas is plentiful and $3.60-3.70's today.

As David Lennard put it, we were facing serious dehydration issues from the high frequency of spitting in the water to determine the rate (and if) we were moving forward. We got in three races.

As far as the A's go, Harper once again exerted his dominance and superior tiller technique by taking me in all three. Mosley got me in one. Palmer was apparently over early (served) Friday night at the homemade barstool with an aquarium bolted to it and a disposal at the bottom whirling up some pretty crazy rum concoction and missed the first race on Saturday due to a case of brown bottle flu. I asked Harper if it was my turn at the next regatta but apparently I still owe him 5 more races.

Nigel took the F18's followed by Lennard and Tad won the 20's!

Green fleck scrapes must be fast.
I really missed getting to hang out with everyone, but I can definitely do without light air Lake sailing.
I stopped by the wave NA's in Duck NC Sunday and they were having a driftfest also. The lightest air I've seen here in months.
Maybe I'll get to catch up with some o' y'all before Spring Fever.Hope so.Like Steeplechase maybe,hint,hint,hint...

p.s. How'd the big checks go over?

Alan pretty much put on a clinic in how to drift an TheMightyHobie18 and pick the right spots to consolidate vs. head off on a wind streak. Took the Open class pretty convincingly.

Congrats!

That's my black lotus jacket. Bill Croughwell borrowed it, and it must not have made it back to me. It's actually my girlfriend's, so we'd better not mention that to her...

Can you hold onto it for me, and we'll link up soon?

So we really got 3rd!? Cool....We hit the road early for the drive home. It was great meeting some new people this weekend. (Hope the guys from Wilmington will give lake sailing another try and come to Spring Fever.) Was a good weekend even if the didn't coperate. See most of you all next season. Anyone on this side of Keowee aught to try and make it to Cat Capers.

I was just informed that this regatta will donate $7500 to the Leukemia society, mostly from the genorosity of the Outback Steakhouse here in Columbia.
Thanks to all who attended, I know I had a good time, my bandmates had a good time, and Im sure glad we were playing music instead of beer pong!
