Weird Tony I would assume our distance is a bit more than 2 miles I want to say more like 200 miles. You are just closer to the finish than I am by two miles.

The DTF is kinda skewed I havent read if they actually have fixed it.

I added you to my list. Im trucking along at 21.5kts in 16kts of wind. I just did a minor course change, in 24hours I hope to be in the big air off Dakar and gybe out west. We gotta make that checkpoint. Sucks that next week I wont be able to follow it due to my work schedule. grrrtt!

Maybe you could get someone to crew for you, look after her for a few days smile
I'm in 20kt winds doing 21.8 knots, the fastest angle seems to be 140-142. Dont know if its the best for VMG but I figure its best to go for max speed.
Its a shame they didn't make a mobile version for the iPhone or WindowsMobile.

Being thick here; how do you add friends? I can see how you search for boats; but when found, I assume I'm being blind and cannot see the "add this boat to friends list"....

Re: Anyone playing the Volvo Ocean Race Game? - 10/17/08 02:42 PM

I am enjoying the game except when I was stopped going through the straights. Lost 11,000 positions when that happened. I guess they say that happened to quite a few people because they game layout could not handle that many boats going through at once. I am TornadoSail2012.

Joined an hour or so ago, PT-73 Is the boat name, a play on my last name, McHale, as in McHale's Navy, a silly comedy show from a LONG time ago, (the 60's) set during WWII about the crew of a PT boat (PT-73) commanded by Lieutenant Commander Quinton McHale.

Re: Anyone playing the Volvo Ocean Race Game? - 10/18/08 03:53 PM

Ive added everyone who added me.

I also noticed that there is a good amount of boats heading straight south off the coast of Africa. I gybed to the west and I am heading 260 at 21.7kts. I amlosing places like there is no tomorrow; but its because the DTF still seems skewed. Once I reach the line the code zero is coming up and I will start picking off positions once again. I dont think heading straight south off the coast of Africa is a good idea, watch all those boats fall back.

While logged into the game click on the link below and press the "Ask for an invite" button.

The DTF seems quite accurate though, unlike the orange line on the map. I worry too much about positions (although i'm quite happy to hape gained 500+ places in the last 12 hours grin)

Thats thing, if you follow the orange line, its the shortest route going around the ROUND planet. If the game was programmed flat, then yes the line makes no sense at all. I am not sure if the programmers took that into consideration. You are aware of the checkpoint off the coast of Brazil right?
Posted By: Tony_F18

Re: Anyone playing the Volvo Ocean Race Game? - 10/18/08 07:48 PM

The orange line is just a pretty line but doesn't serve any real purpose apart from showing where the gates are.
For a more reliable rhumbline its best to open Google Earth and draw a line in that, IMHO you are going a little too far west and will lose opportunities to play the shifts (could be wrong though).
The front of the fleet has already started to sail upwind in the doldrums towards Fernando the Naranja wink

So do we all have to pass around the scoring gate off the coast of Brazil?

Re: Anyone playing the Volvo Ocean Race Game? - 10/18/08 11:53 PM

Its not a scoring gate, but a check point. You must pass to the west of it.

Re: Anyone playing the Volvo Ocean Race Game? - 10/19/08 11:39 PM

For anyone who has not jioned the game yet and wants to, you do not start at the beginning and try to make up all of the distance. they start you at the back of the current pack so that you can make up some of the distance on the leaders. While I think that they could have designed the game better, it still is fun to play anyway.

Freaking doldrums! Stuck there for a day or so now!

Better get used to this, believe they cross the Equator 4 times this Volvo race.

I've just cleared it after also being stuck there for a few days!
Dont forget, if you have never crossed the equator before make sure you perform the appropriate rituals (anything of Fearfactor involving fish or squid will do!)

Not thru yet; but happy that I'm still gaining places; started quite late in the first leg (at about 24500 place) and now up to 10700th

Hopefully this will keep me busy while job hunting!

I've been watching you guys in the doldrums. WOW. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can squeak through with minimum harm.
Posted By: windswept

Re: Anyone playing the Volvo Ocean Race Game? - 10/24/08 01:44 AM

I gained on those who went before I did but then lost the distance back when I got there. The wind speed through the doldrums is a little better for the next 12 hours than when I got through. the wind south of the doldrums is pretty week, but worse than that, it is solidly out of the SE and that means beating beyond the scoring gate and then bearing off to the SW for the first reach out of there. This makes heading towards the cape a direct upwind issue as in the wind is coming straight from the cape. OH Well, sometimes you gain, sometimes you loose.

I finally had to go see what this was all about. I'm signed up and am running waaaaaaay back in the 20k's. Are the places actually other people's accounts, or just made up numbers? I started and in 20 minutes had moved up 5k places, yet I don't see anyone around me. Can you not see boats that are enrolled in a group?

Oh yeah, boat name is SmallOrkan. Tony, I sent you a request to join the CatSailors group.

There's some 35000 players registered. I'm sure a lot of them dropped out or not playing regularly. I started out around 23000 and passed a boat load of people. (pun intended)

33271st place.

"Half my boat is missing" Heading 213, 008kn120, making 13kn.

It started me out in the middle of nowhere, but looks like I may zip past the equator.

We have to pass the mark off the east coast of S. America right?

You are just passing the boats that have been abandoned or not tended to regularly. There are literally thosands of wayward boats.

Now that you are in the mid-20K places, it gets harder.

Looks like we should have good pressure all the way to the mark now.

As much as we all dis these boats as mono slugs, these are hotrods of the type. Both these and the Vendee boats will do well above 20kts. It is my understanding that the Puma crew had that boat up to 31-33 kts during sea trials and their Atlantic crossing. I was given a tour of the boat when it was in Newport in August. What an amazing beast and when you get a chance to really look over the rigging, mast, set-up and so-on you can see why these guys were excited about the boat. Less then half of the crew has around experience and they have been in front or near the front for the race so far.

I was just yanking your chain - it was a pretty big discussion point at our regatta this weekend. I was finally getting some breeze to escape the doldrums and I knew I was going to get a big shift while I was out racing...I meant to tack over so at least I would still have some forward progress in the shift - but I forgot to do so before setting out to sail! It didn't make that much difference though.

I am currently at 2184th position and the first place boat is only 268 miles in front of me. HMMMM! You imagine a fleet this size and this close?

Low pressure off Brazil in 24 hours promises some big wind.

Sweet. I should be rounding the mark in about 30hrs! I'll probably have to stay up and baby sit it, so I don't over run it. Picked up 1800+ places from 6:30 this morning to 5:30 this evening. smile

Look at the weather within the 12 and 24 hour period, where ever there is good wind, aim for that spot for those time periods, its what I have been doing. I started in the 17ks now im in the 2k, not bad considering the size of the fleet.

There is currently a low pressure developing off the coast of brazil. Winds are expected to be in the mid 30s and I am trying hard to get into that area, I got 24hours to go. We'll see.

This game is awesome.

Re: Anyone playing the Volvo Ocean Race Game? - 10/28/08 01:23 AM

Here's a tactical question:

I'm currently flying the code 0. I've got a good angle to hit the mark. but the wind will be coming more astern tomorrow. Should I tighten up my course getting myself more upwind of the mark, then turn down with the chute when I get closer? It looks like I can tighten up about 3* without taking a hit in speed right now.
Posted By: blockp

Re: Anyone playing the Volvo Ocean Race Game? - 10/28/08 01:32 AM

Does anyone know how the game decides which boats to show and which ones to hide? Yesterday when I signed on, there was a boat going the exact same heading and speed as I was. It was just off to my starboard. This morning, it was nowhere to be found. I guess I should have written down the name of it so I could search for it today.

Re: Anyone playing the Volvo Ocean Race Game? - 10/28/08 02:38 AM

Agreed, this game (IMO) for this part is all about getting south and hooking a depression to ride across! I'm diving deep south, playing angles and sails to get the mest VMG south, while getting in positio to get the kite up soonest as the mind moves more north. Right now I'm now on about 193 trying to get into into the wind bend and get the kite up. Just hope I catch this depression, but it is not looking good; my prediction is that I am going to miss it by about 12 hours!!!!

I don't know anything about the limits for the sails. I do, however, believe I'll eventually uncover the dubious plot to separate me from $8 or $10 for the "sail repair" option at some crucial moment in a leg.

Yeah same here. If you look at some of the tracks you can clearly see they are using the "wind angle lock" feature. You can see some smooth rounded tracks while a good amount of other tracks you can see the straight lines and sharp turns.

What ive noticed about the pro sails is you can blow out the spin or code 0, then hoist the regular sails, sail for an hour or so and then reuse the pro sails and everything will work good. No need for a repair kit if this is all it takes.

I am not sure if its a bug or not, but im doing this and it works wonders.

Started way back in the deep 15K position soon I will be in the top 1000 which is good considering the size of the fleet that is roughly 30k+ deep.

How many sails have you blown out??

You may have a big bill when you get to port!

I'm goint to test the depth of the brazilian coast. I'm skirting close enough to see the waxing going on. Testing the theory that the warmer coastal waters have less restiance, making my boat faster.

Jack,

What boat name is yours?

Re: Anyone playing the Volvo Ocean Race Game? - 10/29/08 08:43 PM

I don't know. At first I decided to follow the line. Then a boat above me started gaining by going high so I followed him. I did'nt gain on him or anyone else so now I'm planning on staying above the line a bit until I can get the chute up. That should take me south where I hope to hook up on the kind of breeze Robi's in. It should get intersting in about 36 to 48 hrs out.

Been fun so far. I think I forgot my girl friends name and what she looks like though. grin

Re: Anyone playing the Volvo Ocean Race Game? - 10/29/08 10:06 PM

Time will tell. We've evened out a bit on our latitudes but your a bit further east. You were a little left and ahead earlier. I'm not sure either position is going to make much difference as we both should probably be able to catch the low that's coming through in 36 hours...it's going to be tight to get there in time though depending on how much it lightens up.

Team Ericsson 4 broke the 24 speed record last night by clocking 590,5nm in 24hrs (thats an average of 24,60!)

"Ericsson 4 has broken the 24-hour speed record set by ABN-AMRO 2 in the last Volvo Ocean Race,
three times in the past twelve hours. At 0355GMT Ericsson 4 reached 565 nautical miles in the previous 24 hour period,
breaking the existing record by two miles, but that figure increased at 0755 GMT to 589nm and by 1145h GMT this had
further increased to 590.5nm. At the point of writing, no other boat in the fleet had broken this record,
which is still awaiting ratification from the World Speed Racing Council."

Looking at this picture from the ****, armchair sailing isnt so bad grin

That is me. I had set a course to the east for 4 hours, then south after that. I overstood the layline by about one hour. This game does not allow you to program beyond one tack. I also forgot to put the sails on auto. After that I went sailing for 3 days on the ocean and that was that. i lost 11,000 spots, but had a great sail. the wind speeds picked up as I went east and that put me beyond the layline to tack and make the mark. I will have to figure out how to handle this game when I am away from a computer for more than 12 hours.

North Sails to sponsor the Volvo Ocean Race Game

North Sails Benelux has joined the virtual race and will sponsor the Volvo Ocean Race Game pro sails option for the second Leg to Cochin (India). Just like most of the real teams now over 43.000 Virtual yachts will be equipped with the latest state of the art North Sails.

The best part for all you virtual sailors out there is you get to use them for free!

Use a professional sail, under certain conditions, it allows you to go faster

Cost: FREE
This item is sponsored for LEG 1 by UnitedGames and ManyPlayers

Sorry, that's what I meant. I hadn't realized that it was a sponsored item, meaning it cost someone money for me to have that option in the game.

For some reason, I can see sponsorships for the pro sails option drying up on the last couple legs. Thereby encouraging all of us non-payers to pony up for the good sails.

Time will tell.

I disagree. Isn't this an excellent opportunity for North to get it's name in front of 40k sailors?

I would think that other sailing product firms would be waiting for the opportunity.

The 40k could easily become 100k over the next few months as new folks join in. Remember you can throw out 3 legs for scoring.

Beyond that, many people may only sail one or two legs. That is still exposure. However, they do need to market the sponsor better so that their participation gets recognized.

I will remember North the next time I go for new sails.

I now have a tenuous hold on that low coming across in the roaring 40's. Making good speed and really hoping that I can stay on the leading edge of the low. I don't think the game takes sea-state into account so falling off the incoming air trough shouldn't be TOO bad. Every ounce of speed is so important to get engaged with that low that I set an alarm every three hours last night so I could tweak the heading!

Looks like I'm not deep enough into the edge of the system on the rhumline around 26/23:37s and so need to dive deeper into the system to hope to catch it up later.

Man, I thought I had 24 hours before I fell off the leading edge of the air entering the low but BAM, just slipped off it. Now I'm trying to figure out if I keep fighting east or dip down to ensure I catch the 90 degree angle at the trailing edge of the low...

Funny thing about that low was yesterday right at 6:59 am I was positioned right in front of that low waiting to get the leading edge. At 7:00 am the winds were updated and I found myself at the back edge of it. The leading edge moved like 200 hundred miles in a minute.

I had always assumed that it was a snapshot of the predicted wind 12 hours from the current situation.

As it relates to the low, I believe it's "wobbling" and it's hard to see it in 12 hour snapshots. The leading edge trough, while it jumped dramatically last night, has hardly moved this afternoon. I gybed back out to try and reengage with the leading edge.

You are passing huge groups of boats that are wandering aimlessly about. It will get harder as you progress, but your skills will improve as you go. Keep at it and let's see how you do. Most of us except Jake and Bjorn may not get to Cape Town before the time limit catches us. This is good practice for the legs to come.

The first two boats have finished and we have several Cat Sailor boats who should be arriving in the next couple days.

What do you guys think about getting some swag together for the overall winners of all the races? (Caps, shirts, etc)

I love the idea. My wife is expanding our graphics business into performance apparel and logo-esque items. We would be glad to pitch in some goodies. Let's chat about the details.

We went to Lanier for Mike's distance race and I just pointed both boats east. Last night when I got home after midnight, TL was dead in the water and PW was doin' 22.6 kts and in 9983rd place.

This AM the server went dead and now it will be a real crap shoot to see if anyone else finishes within the time limit.

I had to bail with Pudwacker 307 to go and 8899th place and TL with 583 to go and 11480 place.

I had out of town business and couldn't get on line.

Congratulations to those who made it to port safely. It was fun but just too time consumming. You guys are on your own now.

The racing map is inaccessible right now so I have no clue what the conditions are on the game, the actual situation looks a bit unstable.
I will probably go up the coast a bit with the light southerly and take it from there.

Server got slashdotted wink
Thats what happens when 40K+ people try to login at the same time.
I was lucky to be able to set the Genoa and set a course SE, just before the app became inaccessible.

Transferring about 40GB in a few seconds would bring many servers and networks to their knees.

I opened a post on the support forum about this; predicting that this would happen; they also screwed up the "auto sail select" option; I started with my non-pro sails Kite up; took me 17 minutes to get my Genny up and going in the right direction!!!

Rankings are also all over the place (no surprise really; If I was them I would have disabled the ranking display for 12 hours so it can settle down) - I have gone from 60K down to 680 and back up to 59K.

Do these people have any idea / common sense!!!!

Re: I'm finished and waiting to catch your docklines!!! - 11/15/08 12:44 PM

The rankings won't mean a thing until we get around the cape. The first place boat is aground to the north. At this point I think the higher the ranking number the better off you are.

Good luck to all!

I just lost an insane amount of places though.

For those that are playing and can't connect from work and have a WM PDA, skyfire will allow you to play somewhat. It's kind of unweildy but it can be done. I've made course adjustments but can't really look at the map much... just FYI

Dont look at the scoreboard too much, just try to overtake the boats in front one at a time.
Now in 390th position and quite pleased, the path to crossing the Tropic of Capricorn will be interesting.
IMHO the front pack is too far west so I hope to catch up to them within a few days or so.
It also helps to keep an eye on the polar diagram whenever the wind changes in strength.

Don't let it worry you; remember the game only refreshes every 20 mins and so some funny things happen if you are on a similar course to others and have just made a course change.

I'm all over the place in the rankings. I'm not sure the options will help me. Just add to the confusion of my tactically incapable brain. Everytime I think I've got a good idea, and take a bit of risk I get hosed. I'll play so long as its free, and I'll be content with my placing if I can stay below 10k. I think I have had it wih this so called game. I can't imagine dealing with the bugs for another 7 months. I do have more of a life than this. Their severs can't handle it and they don't respond until hours later. I tried emailing the help desk and after I spent the time to send a message I get a server down screen try again later. What I'm going to do is call my credit card Co. and get the money back. If enough people did it they may change the way they do things.

I've been offline for over 24 hours on a business trip (damn hotels want too much money for internet access anymore and my per diem is whittling away!). Fortunately the auto-helm kept me in pretty good shape and now I can manipulate it through the hole at the scoring gate.

The turn I took north to just barely get around the high pressure before it saturated the area proved to be a lucky break...now if I can just get around the vacuum at the gate.

Re: I'm finished and waiting to catch your docklines!!! - 11/22/08 08:04 PM

I hate this game. I was doing well staying north. With the wind being what it is, I'm too far west to clear the island and have to head south east, so I can go north. I've lost 10,000 places because of that mistake. I was down around 6k, now I'm 18.5k.
Posted By: Tony_F18

Re: I'm finished and waiting to catch your docklines!!! - 11/22/08 08:18 PM

Karl: You cant blame the game for missing the gate wink

I went up 14,000 places instantly (17k->3k).
The algorithm that calculates the position isn't very accurate below the scoring gate.

Only 7 more months of that ahead of you. If it was run well the game is alright, however the people running it are morons. They also seem to be competing in the race. Nothing like having total control.

Anybody know how to withdraw a boat? I haven't had time to even check my boat this week, and the next month or so looks about the same. I don't really want to leave my boat floating around aimlessly. If I can just pull the plug and let it sink to the bottom of the ocean, that might be better.

Re: I'm finished and waiting to catch your docklines!!! - 11/28/08 08:57 AM

Finished in 672th position which I'm very pleased with, missed a lot of places at one point because I was away from a PC for too long (I will stay away from the paid options as long as possible wink )

IMHO the track chosen by the virtual sailors really outperformed that of the "real" boats, considering we have roughly the same polars and the exact same wind conditions.

Its interesting to see the VOR navigators sitting behind their laptops making the same hard decisions the armchair sailors take:

IMHO the track chosen by the virtual sailors really outperformed that of the "real" boats, considering we have roughly the same polars and the exact same wind conditions.

Its interesting to see the VOR navigators sitting behind their laptops making the same hard decisions the armchair sailors take:

Erm, the virtual sailors did not have the same course restrictions; The real boats had to get to a scoring gate at 58E; we did not. This is one reason some got in first.

We also do not have the same wind situation. Our wind is set every 12 hours, the real boats have constand wind changes. We are not sailing the same race!

Re: I'm finished and waiting to catch your docklines!!! - 11/28/08 09:43 AM

IMHO the VOR teams made a decision to get to the scoring gate of E58 the fastest to get points.
If they wanted to they could have sailed the exact same course we did but they would probably not get as much points since they would cross E58 later than if they sailed straight at it.
I really think that if they sailed the same course of the winning virtual boat they would be a lot closer to the finish (shorter distance sailed).
Our weather does change only every 12H but I think that cancels itself out really since we keep both the good and bad winds longer than in reallife.
(Going as far south as they did was a safer option though with all the piracy going on lately).

I had a lot of fun this race, hope the next one is just as good.

Will we have pirates boarding some of the virtual boats? That would be cool....

I think some creative writer should post a kidnap/ransom story and sail the virtual boat next to that Saudi tanker ship... It'd be world news in no time...

You have to change sails quite a bit, sometimes it pays to use the jib instead of the Code-0.
To get a headstart on the weather forecasts I installed UGrib , great program for sailing in general as well (and its free).

I lost quite a few places due to a 4 hour calm with 0.5kts of wind crazy

From the VORG site:
Quote

Restart at Sri Lanka
Due to conflicting information in our Leg 3 briefing we currently face a situation where a number of boats have taken the northern route over Sri Lanka instead of the southern route. In our explanation of the race rules, we did not prohibit this course and it is our error, for which we sincerely apologise.

We pride ourselves in having an open, fun and positive game with a large community of sailors and armchair sailing enthusiasts. Because of this mistake we have created a situation that many people feel is unfair. Therefore we have decided to make a change to the current situation so that the game is once more perceived as fair for all players.

After careful consideration and discussions with our player community, game officials and Volvo Ocean Race officials we have decided to restart the third leg of the Virtual Ocean Race Game.

We feel that the restart is the best choice out of the options available to us for these reasons:

* the restart will reinstate the level playing field for every player
* the majority (98,100) of the players are already near the restarting point and therefore the impact will be as minimal as possible under the circumstances.

We greatly regret the fact that the sailors that took the northerly route or are in leading positions down south will feel disappointed, and we feel very bad about this. We are extremely sorry but we have thoroughly discussed this solution with all officials, virtual and real ones, and we feel this is the fairest way to redress the situation for the entire player fleet.

RESTART PROCEDURE

* All boats will be teleported to the start point off the southern end of Sri Lanka.
* The restart will happen at 11:00 (GMT +1) on 16 December 2008.
* The starting position will be 05°600N - 80°600E.
* All boats will be sailed automatically until you can log in.

THE COURSE

Starting from the pack boats shall:

* Leave the island of Sri Lanka to port.
* Sail through the Pulau We gate. The gate is a line true north of position 05°50.000N - 095°20.000E, leaving the island, Palau We, to starboard.
* Finish in Singapore. The mark will be set @ 01°15.830N - 103°36.010E

The finish area is a large circle of circa 30nm in radius.

Once again, our deepest apologies for this situation, but we hope that you will enjoy the challenge ahead of you!

Apparently a bunch of boats went north over Sri Lanka and the directions were confusing...so they're restarting at 11 GMT + 1

the winds change to the next position at 5am and 5pm est. Expect big shifts then. Other than that, you are sailing in what you see. I made it up to 1,200th place this afternoon but have dropped back a little to 1,800th place once the breeze filled in to the south. A big righty is expected for tomorrow morning which isn't going to do me much good on the leaders.

Re: I'm finished and waiting to catch your docklines!!! - 12/18/08 04:22 AM

I have the idea that the positions are measured in a straight line to Singapore and in no way represent your actual finishing place.
Last night I went from 70.000 to 13.000 just because I changed to a SE tack.
There is really no telling who will win this race.

I get the non responsive message a lot and just log off and back in or sometimes can get it to work by refreshing the screen. I have both gained, lost and regained 60,000-70,000 positons over the last couple of days. Set the autopilot two nights ago to find it off and me back 72,000 places. Gained all that and more back yesterday.

Re: I'm finished and waiting to catch your docklines!!! - 12/19/08 12:19 AM

looks like something is majorly hosed. I was right next to Roxy earlier this afternoon. Since then, I've jumped out to a huge lead in front of the whole fleet. It appears I'm sailing normally but that the other boats have stayed still. What are you guys seeing?

It shows me 23 miles closer to the finish than the 1st place boat but has me in 2,546th place.

Something is scrwewy.

Not that I am in contention for anything...but there is a new Volvo car at stake here for the winner. They should be a little more refined than this.

Its not limited to the Volvo game either, apparently the VendeeGlobe game has the same issues at the moment (they share the same platform).
They also mention there is some problem in their datacenter and it will take 2 weeks to get more capacity to handle the 100K players reloading
at the same time (Guess they didn't make the whole system very easy to scale up).

Ok, you can view it easily if you use firefox, right click, "view image" or if you use IE, right click properties copy the image path and paste it into your navigation bar.

Re: I'm finished and waiting to catch your docklines!!! - 12/19/08 12:14 PM

Up to position 628 now (not feeling too bad about that in a fleet of 90,000!).

I had really hoped to make a jog north in the middle of last night sometime after the evening wind update. Then I would tack back at the morning shift that was supposed to see a lefty. When the whole thing went to pot and the wind wasn't updating, I didn't know what to do so I "held the course" and kept going south. I'm a little further south than I want to be - I was hoping to be able to tack for the gate with the left shift we're expecting at tonight's evening update - but I think I'm going to be too far south to wait that long and will have to eat a bad tack for several hours later today. You guys have good angle on me at the moment if I have to tack back in this stuff - I wish I was on your line!

I wish I had a screenshot of that! I'm in 359th place now and still climbing slowly. I now see the 1st and 4th place boats just in front of me and I'm gaining. However, it's going to take a miracle for me to hang on after the next tack tonight. The catsailor fleet to the north has a terrific line to the gate. I really wish I had taken that north hitch last night.

Here in about 4 hours, there's going to be a little bit of a right shift. I don't think it's going to be enough to save me with you guys though. I think you guys are going to still be in a better position to round that gate in front of me.

I know! But if I tack back now, I'll have all you guys ahead of me. I'm hoping the shift in one hour is going to be a little steeper than predicted so I can get a big lift to the gate and keep you guys on my back door....it's a bit of a hail mary. If I tack to starboard now, you guys will definitely be in front of me because of the wind angle. I'm hoping the guys to my north get a big nasty header in an hour that will be a lift for me.

112th place now! eek (but I do realize it's a bit meaningless at this point).

What kind of connection are you guys using?
Apart from the start of the leg I have not had a single problem logging on to the website.
(I have a relatively fast connection though with 15mb Cable).

I'm on a dsl connection. I can log in but the play screen won't load. I may just abandon the boat. More virtual scrap carbon for repairs for everyone else.

Looks like the more-wind route might be paying; I was just a mile in fromt of Jake and now it's 15 miles and 2.5K places(i'm back up to mid 6.5K from a high of about 1500; and a low of about 1400 in the last 24 hours.

It is actually quite simple to avoid such 2kt wind holes.
The wind is divided in a grid like a chessboard, if you draw a square using four windarrows as corners and divide that by two you can see where you must, or must not, be.
See attachment (name of skipper striked through to protect the innocent grin), had this particular skipper stayed north just above the line he would not be slowed down so much wink )

Actually saw the finish last night in Singapore. 4 boats in 20 mins, and 2 to 4 boatlengths apart, just awesome. Coming out from the maze of anchored ships in the night with Code Zero and Full Main was a sight to behold!

Set my alarmclock for 3:00 but slept right through it! (and it is very loud).
Must have gone into a coma after I hit the pillow, lost 1500 places because of this. frown

I was in NZ when they came to Auckland, I remember Dennis Conner giving a press conference 30 minutes after finishing and taking the next plane home.
It just wasn't for him.

Ok, I have a question a/b the game...

Does anyone know if it actually is faster to follow the rhumb line that they give us or "cut the corner".

I mean in the game, not in real life.

Depends on what the wind does.

Thier line is the great circle route I believe; so in absence of any wind issues it would be the quickest route; however; the wind changes!

Not to sound snarky, but I understand wind velocity variations for the route. I just wondered if the shortest distance truly is the line they give us (great circle). I should have said, "shortest route" instead of "fastest".

I did find this in the FAQ's but I did not see it last time I looked.

All yacht positions are calculated using spherical trigonometry formulas.
So the world is round."

Will,
google "great circle calculator", you should be able to find something to compare to the dotted line. I haven't been worrying too much about the line myself, especially this far out.

Re: I'm finished and waiting to catch your docklines!!! - 01/21/09 02:14 AM

If you were a power driven vessel the great circle route would be the way to go. Sailing, stay as close as possible while still sailing fast. Racing sail boats.....Good Luck.

IMPORTANT POLAR UPDATE!
Fri 23 Jan 2009

Today at 19.00 GMT +1 the Polars will be adjusted. We've received a lot of player requests on this subject since the last update. After carefully reviewing the current situation we came to the conclusion they indeed need to be adjusted to improve the gameplay. These changes will affect the behaviour of the sails within the 30 degrees wind angle. So be sure to check it out.

Checkout the Maximum Wave Height data from the real boats:

Waves well above 10m, some even peeking at 14m!
Imagine sailing upwind in 14m seas and 50kt winds on a boat that is designed to surf downwind.

I wonder how many people are going to base thier strategy around following INC LLC, as he has performed so well in the past games.

I wouldn't think gaining places is very meaningful this early.

I have headed south from the outset in order to try and sail the shortest route. At present it is not paying off!

I'm sailing my own race. But I agree some will be shadowing INC LLC, Aldabra and Ariadna.

The only thing that IS usefull about the place counter is it's showing that MOST people are South/ west of me (Which may be good or bad, my current thinking is good). I dumped around 70K Places to get where I wanted to be so it is good to see I am getting SOME back at present.

IF I was sailing southeast and still loosing places I would know I had screwed the leg up at this point. I agree the placeing at this point has no bearing (yet) on final positions as we are so well spaced out; but it does give an indication of what I was expecting to happen is happening:

1, Going east was a bit of a corner to bang and I expected to loose loads of Places
2, Now dropping back SE is gaining back some. (as expected)
3, Nothing is certain until we are in Rio
4, I Still have to cross the doldrums....

Skyfire, cool. We were just targeting the folks with the 'run what you brung' browsers smile

We've found the tool's alerts really handy when gybing back and forth to stay in a finger of stronger breeze. The heading and speed change alerts go off when you cross into another wind grid. The change in position alert helps to see if you are fading in the fleet - doing 'something wrong' - or 'creative'.

Good luck in the game!

No sinister intent in the use of the word 'targeting'...Just meant that was the intended user of the tool. There is nothing evil in the tools many have used it without a problem. Not sure what might be causing it to be flagged as spyware. Haven't seen that previously. I'd be glad to work with you to see what is causing it if you drop me a note at VolvoTools@regattatech.com with some particulars about how your system is complaining about spyware etc.

I was convinced that the pack I was in (Blow boat, Aldabra and Ariadna) were not going to manage to sail around the east side of the high pressure and so (late) elected to sail around the west of it. So far I've lost about 4500 places getting where I want to be; however it looks like the systems are moving faster east than I was expecting.

When I plotted it out; it was close as to making the west route, but less intervention was required (I am Ski instructing all day today and tomorrow with no access to the boat) than taking the east route.

Thus I decided it was worth a punt as I would probably loose 50 miles to them anyway as a result of lack of "boat time". As it is I am about 160miles behind them.

I have taken a big flyer, very few have followed me; most have followed the rhumb line.

If it works, I'll hopefully slot back in around 300-500th; if it does not I'll be around 6-8K!!

It was essentially forced on me as I could not care for the boat much today and tomorrow and the west route required less "work"; but MUCH higher risk.

The next wind update will be critical. If it parks zero wind on the rhumb line around where Blow boat et al are, I should be able to sail around them in the next 12 hours. IF I end up blocked; or they have good wind/angle, I'm stuffed!!

As I said; high risk!!!

Did not quite get there (yet); you have about 600 more places to go!

Next wind update looks kinda interesting; maybe west is not so bad for this one....

Next one looks even more west biased; but things are changing sooooo quickly that each update looks nothing like what Ugrib suggests even 2 hours before we get it - total crap shoot. Winner is already into Rio!!!

BUT, you are going to hit that wall at 39:30 south soon. I'll be hopfully pootling up west waiting for Code Zero blasting conditions at the next update taking me almost directly to Rio!!!

(Thats why I finished Texel as 90th last year instead of 50th as we could have done cry ).

I know that; I had little choice. See above; the east / middle route was going to need way more time at the keyboard and I was essentially away from a computer for 48 hours. This I had little option but to go west.

Tomorrow is the start of Leg 6, unfortunately there will be no VX40s waiting for us when we get there frown :
Good luck to all!

USA here we come!!

Are you ready for Leg 6? Or as the average American motivational speaker would say: "ARE YOU RRREEAADDYY?". We're going to the land of the brave and the home of the free. It might be a bit different than Rio with its hot... weather, but trust us Boston in May is no punishment either! Boston is the birthplace of the American Revolution, one of the oldest cities in the United States and most important the home of Samuel Adams beer! The Leg race is expected to take 3-4 weeks about and will start Saturday.

Yea I missed two sections of the last leg . Now this leg starts and im gone for about a week. But I will be enjoying my new Camper and Tiger at the lake. Oh to choose real sailing or virtual sailing.
I'll take real sailing any day. Especially since my injury Its been almost 6 months since I flew a Hull.

Re: results so far. - 04/13/09 07:32 PM

I'm doing OK at present(around 600th), but I am going to be slap bang in the middle of a wind box at the next update which is a bit worrying. Also looks like there is going to be much less wind close to shore!!!!
Posted By: Tony_F18

Re: results so far. - 04/13/09 07:40 PM

I got stuck on a couple of rocks for the first 16 hours of so!
Thats what you get when you go out sailing!

(Had some good racing yesterday though, guess that makes it ok).
The racing life of the Wildcat started of good with two out of three bullets
on Sunday (they missed the first race and it might have something to do with the skipper as well).

For some reason, I think when you get back Capt. Jack Sparrow will have probably put your boats over the edge of the world....

Went round a hour or two ago; spent ages working out the best route to Boston. Sussed the first few days, but the forecast is all over the place. 300th for now.......

Thanks for the help guys. Yea I had headed east so I could just turn north and make the mark if I could fing a comp at the lake.
But the Tiger is tuned up and ready for Santa Cruz this weekend.
For everyone who helped out I'll send you a check as soon as I collect this 9.9 million this bank in africa has for me.

Let me know when that African check comes, I have been waiting a few years for mine. Again, sorry that I did not catch it in time, but I did try to get you back up in the right direction. Now that you 2 are back, I will leave the boats alone.

I'm only here till tomorrow so feel free to tweek them if you like . I got a brand new spin waiting to jump up the mast this weekend. Conditions look like perfection for Santa Cruz this weekend.

Seems like you just rolled the dice again! My plan is to avoid the confused breeze and gybe late tonight. So hopefully I'll be reaching most of tomorrow then on the beat with the rest of the fleet to the finish.

Would not be so sure about that; I've lost over 4000 places in the last couple of days!!!

Rich, I'll take care of the boats. I've got a bullseye on my back so I'll use them to block Brain Wave and Scooby. grin

I was going to go sailing but I think I need to stay home and take care of bizz. I'll go sailing tomorrow.

Neil (Brainwave) has to include leg 5 (14162)in his overall results, so that keeps him back - no matter how well he does in this leg.

My last three legs where absolutely rubbish! I was just too busy that I really couldn't be bother to stay up till 23:00 sometimes.
And this one isn't getting the attention it needs either since I am going to Texel tomorrow where the sailing starts at Wednesday. eek

I was fortunate to get a good finish in that leg. Neil has still done quite well. I was lucky to have help with the last leg. I only drove for the first day then handed off.

Re: The results leg 6, Overall - 06/07/09 02:27 PM

I saw all of them out of the water in Boston. Many different design thoughts going on through the fleet, but some awesome boats. Puma though is a true work of carbon art. Erick Geotz and crew really do fantastic work.

Re: The results leg 6, Overall - 06/07/09 07:44 PM

First chance I've had today to look here. I'm sailing 4 boats, they are having server problems and I'm hitting every piece of land I get close to with different boats crazy. Good fun. I have beer though.

I wonder what happens to those boats after the race. Anyone want to go in on a day sailor?

Catman,

Remember that the tracks are a summary updated every two hours. I gybed a couple of times just around the wind change time. This makes it look like you are crabbing down the channel.

Re: The results leg 6, Overall - 06/07/09 11:07 PM

I've never seen it do this. I understand the tracks average out but my boats heading is about 30 degrees off my track and I haven't made a course change since the shift. Somethings weird.

Don't worry about it. I've seen it loads! I'm tracking my boat on the VRtool and it s going where it should be even if the game screen thinks it is not.

The Dutch boat Powerof7 seems to be in the lead on nearly every race, very impressive even if this is only a game.

Re: The results leg 6, Overall - 06/08/09 03:21 PM

With as many boats as there are it does make you wonder.

The tracks are better or correct today. I wasn't using the red balls to aim the boat, just the boat.

Rich let me know when your back and I'm sailing Tom's boat (tornado2012) for him and it looks like someone else has made an adjustment to it after me. If you want to or if you told Tom you would take care of it let me know.

After doing some reading it's not so amazing that certain boats can be at the front. Many of them are using route planning software. They also have access to the actual shift two hours before it happens using the same Ugrib file that the game uses. If you go to the forums at look in the tools section you can get more info. Powerof7 must be using good software. I'm happy getting where I am without it.

I don't think we'll be actually sailing the final leg. I'm hearing rumours that "something special" is planned.

How it would have been different for me if I'd not had nightmares on 2 legs that were "must counts".

I'm throwing out a 3,000ish as I've got to coun t two horror legs...
