Area F qualifier/Wurstfest II Regatta

Area F qualifier/Wurstfest II Regatta - 11/10/08 05:24 PM

Two things

1) Any results?

2) In September, this proclamation posted on the regatta website
Quote
JUST ANNOUNCED! -- Wurstfest Regatta II will also be the Area F Qualifier for the 2009 Alter Cup (U.S. Multihull Championship)

Also directly from the website
Quote
Multi-hulls with up to 3 classes based on Portsmouth rating and a separate class for trimarans.

Based on Current Entries list, four classes, or groups, are shown. I thought Alter Cup qualifiers were, or had to be, one start for all boats?

There was one start for all boats (beachcats).

There was one start for the large multihulls (Trimarans / Cats) and one start for the beach cats. The beach cats race was then scored by class (e.g. F18, I-20, Portsmouth etc), and the Alter cup qualifier was scored based on those who paid their U.S. sailing member ship dues to compete.

John Tomko / Ian Billings won the qualifier. I think Me/Todd Bouton got 2nd place (the scorer missed our last race finish because we were hidden behind a Corsair F-28, but the PRO saw us finish and got it corrected). I expect results will be posted within a day or so.

Phil Collins missed the offset mark on the first race and got a DSQ and there were only 3 races (no throw out) because of light wind on Saturday.

The highlight for me was watching the replay of GPS tracks from the F-18 fleet on a projector screen at the end of the regatta - we got a lot of interest from many sailors (including mono hull sailors) and will be makinig this a staple part of our F-18 circut next year.

Forgot the offset? Ouch!

Phil actually pushed that to a hearing and didn't just retire? Seems hard to believe...

No, it's more likely that the RC overstepped its authority. RC cannot DSQ anybody. Only a PC can do that (thus Mike's comment).

Same result though. RAF / DNF / DSQ all have the same points.

Light air is not the 17's strong suit anyway.

I was actually hoping that wasn't the case at a USSA Area qualifier. Perhaps the SIs allowed that (although even harder to believe)?

What were you hoping wasn't the case? The wind? - it was light on Saturday, but blew 15, gusting 20 on Sunday for both races. I mentioned the DSQ from memory - but as Matt points out RAF or DNF would be the same score and I was not party to the situation. There was no minimum wind requirement in the SI. After the infamous "Windgate" I'm comfortable with that. I thought there was enought wind on Saturday to run a good race. The conditions were challenging - with un even pressure and some holes - but everyone had the same information and so it came down to the skill of the sailor (putting yourself into the pressure and avoiding the holes).

Holy unintended consequences, Batman...

I was never discussing the wind, only whether there was a hearing (if there was actually a DSQ). Hard to tell, no results are posted here (and I can't find them on the event website).

And, it's really not just about the score, especially at this level.

I don't believe the results will show a DSQ, I think they will show a RAF. I believe Phil retired after finishing, based on comment he made to me after the race. He missed the offset mark first lap, went around it on 2nd lap.
Yes, it's an unfortunate mistake to make after driving all that way.
He sailed much better on Sunday, too bad we couldn't have had a 3rd race on Sunday, there sure was good wind at the time.

Results are now posted (the scorer had some Sail Wave nightmares). They do show a DSQ for Phil - but as previously highlighted I'm not sure that is the correct code (but the score would not be different if it was RAF). I'll follow up with the scorer.
