There it is- Sheer proof - nobody in the USA sails or cares about catamarans. Straight from SA.

RE: E-scows high on the list. I betcha there are maybe 3 at their NA that are less than 4 years old.

Ugg. This is true. The MC scow is more prevalent in the Midwest than the H16.

Sure they can tack on a dime, they're just slow.

Now the C-Scow.....I'd consider one if I had the Cash,Crew, and truck to pull it.

Take a look at the list again and consider who has a national class and then count the type of sailing.... eg.
Single handed
Double handed
Three or more in the boat.

Drum roll ............. For national 2 person classes... the winner is

Double Hander National
11) Hobie 16 54
13) Star 52.7
15) Snipe 50.3
19 Vanguard 15 47.3

WAY TO GO HOBIE 16 CLASS on the three year average..... Beating out the Star Class is impressive!

(I toss the 29ner because it is a junior class in the USA)

The other take home point is to recognize that sail boat racing is indeed social... MANY of the top 25 classes are raced with three or more on the team....

We have three E Scows at Sail Sand Point in Seattle. The sailors and staff love them.

When was the last NA's on the west coast? It's not evident in Rojer Jolly's tables.

No problem modifying the table if needed.

You mean Hobie 16 NA's I suppose. That would be 2007 in Alameda, CA.

In the Hobie 16 class am I correct that they only allow 56 entrants, and if they allowed more would they be higher on the list.

I don't think so...although at various 16 Open's they've split into Gold and Silver fleets.

'04 (71) boats, '03 (70) boats, the highest # in last ten years was '99 with (96) boats.

No limits for H16 NAs for BYOB events.

When there are supplied boats (such as in Ventura), there can sometimes be limits, but that's normally several times the number of boats (otherwise, with the rotations, you wouldn't get enough races per team). In Ventura, they did not get that type of turnout.

actually talking about the E Scows NA's... My point is that it's a regional class and MUCH easier to get to the event.

and you have to consider the NA turnout of a regional class somewhat differently then the NA turnout for a truly national class.

Re: Hobie 16 ties J/24 in OD survey - 12/18/08 05:52 PM

Interesting point at this years 16 N.A.'s there was only about 7 boats that were from Division 7,which is the region that the event was held in.

Re: Hobie 16 ties J/24 in OD survey - 12/18/08 06:49 PM

How about the Rhodes Island NA's.... bet you it turns out lower then that number! (They don't hold regattas in New England any more)

What it tells you is that the 16 class is truly national and committed to keeping the competition going. It also points to the challenge to the class to address the needs of the regional fleets.

Every class has challenges... EG. The US A class is getting some grief.... After running a maxed out 100 boat worlds in Fla.... No yanks are attending the very next worlds in Australia.... (which also maxed out participation.

Next years 16 N.A's in Kingston ON Canada will be a real challenge to get number's as there is not even a Hobie fleet in Kingston and there will probably only be 3-4 Canadian teams at the event

Don't miss the NA's in Kingston. It's one of the best places in the world for sailing.

There's something about a 16NAs that just shouldn't be missed. And, as Bob said, CORK is an outstanding sailing venue.

As for the A class not participating in AUS, I would imagine that between the economy in the toilet and the weaker dollar, that can't be helping.

There are still regattas in New England, they aren't what they used to be but there are definitely still regattas.

I wish US Sailing would take a real survey and come up with a list like this.
A couple problems I see with the list are that the Laser class has a North Americans and a Nationals... both were capped, they chose the one with less boats, NA's.
We had 130 boats at V15 Nat'ls but there wasn't a single race all weekend because of no wind, it was rescheduled and only 77 boats showed up. Had they used the original it would have put the V15 over the Hobie 16.
Obviously we all know there are more boats than who competes at NAs and each year big differences are seen depending on what region the event was held.
Given that, it is pretty cool the the 16s have such a dedicated class that are willing to travel and maybe if other classes would do that this survey would be more accurate.

Todd, your definition of "more accurate" does not apply, this is how the author conducted the survey. Unless you think the numbers posted are erroneous, I'd say it's accurate for the intent of the author.

That's not to say that I'm not surprised by some of the standings (I really thought the Opti and Sunfish would be way higher).

Never underestimate the power of the Hobie 16. There are more of those boats sailing at weekend regattas than most of the other boats on the list, so if you start changing the criteria, it might actually move up on the list.

Re: Hobie 16 ties J/24 in OD survey - 12/23/08 08:04 PM

I agree with the E Class assessment of it being regional. We are in the central location of the E scow with a ton of them in my YC, and the farthest they EVER travel is either to Wisconsin or Minnesota, but usually its just a trip to Okoboji from here for them. The MCs are spread out a bit more, but I can't see the fun of having a boat that cost $15k that my 14 can keep up with tack for tack all the way around the course. The portsmith numbers are almost the same between a 14 and MC and you don't have to pop your collar and wear plaid shorts to fit in on a 14......

Re: Hobie 16 ties J/24 in OD survey - 12/24/08 10:12 PM

I'm a happy cat sailor, so I'm not defending the MC. I just think the MC is just up there because it's a good youth boat and easy to sail. You can't stall them in a tack and they sail downwind fairly well. I've seen them get into tacking duels before.

With that said. My sloppy worn out 16 can do a horizon job on a brand new MC.

I can't figure out how the butterfly made the list....
