Re: Sydney to Hobart Live - 12/26/08 05:58 AM

I swear I saw during the coverage a beachcat sailed solo miles out to sea off Sydney heads as Wild Oats and Scandia maxi's stormed past. There were also plenty of multis on the sidelines.

I remember some years back a 30-40 foot cat beat the entire mono fleet to the heads but the TV commentators would not say a word about it. It certainly proved the point to my mind.

Wild Oats 11 cost 10 million, Scandia cost 4 million.
Lets say someone was fool hardy enough to spend the average ,
7 mil on a multi. What could it do that they couldn't?

BTW:- It is a great race with some great boats but any boat that needs to run a motor in my books is a motor boat.
Regards,
Phill

Qualify for entry in the S2H.

Gladstone winner set to attack Hobart record

'Bass Strait - Raw Nerve 2005 Sydney Hobart speed attempt'
Victorian orthodontist Martyn Riley sailed his Crowther 17 metre catamaran, Raw Nerve, to his third Brisbane to Gladstone victory in a row this afternoon and after sailing this 308 mile course declared the boat and the crew are ready for another crack at the Sydney to Hobart 'All Comers' record.

Last September Riley and his Raw Nerve crew narrowly missed breaking the 'All-Comers' Sydney to Hobart sailing speed record set by Robert Miller's 147 foot (47 metre) monohull Mari Cha III in 1999, of 1 day 18 hours 37 minutes.

Only boats sailing in the Sydney to Hobart race are qualified to tilt at the Volvo 60, Nokia's official race record set in the same year, with an elapsed time of 1 day 19 hours 48 minutes 2 seconds.

Martyn Riley aboard Raw Nerve and his crew, including the yacht designer Stuart Bloomfield, were well inside record pace as they rounded Tasman Light but the wind dropped away just as it has for countless other sailors in the last sixty years, and they missed the 'All Comers' record by 90 minutes. They did however finish inside Nokia’s time.

Dockside in Gladstone after his third line honours win in a row, Riley was all smiles. ‘In this race we did not have any strong winds at all, it was quite a softish run.

'Now we are ready for another crack at the Hobart 'All Comers' record. In this Gladstone race, we confirmed the boat is set up just the way we need it. Philippe Peche has designed a big roachy main and that proved it's worth. We’ve had a good line honours win, but with the breeze continuing to build we don’t expect to win on handicap.

'We will take the boat back to Sydney to prepare for another Hobart record attempt. All we need now is for Roger ‘Clouds’ Badham to find us a weather system.'

Stuart Bloomfield told of this Gladstone race.

‘From the start line we were never headed, we went wide in the night and the breeze kept building, By this morning's sked we off Breaksea Spit, 22 miles ahead of the second boat. On the leg from Lady Elliott we had a spinnaker run, then a two sail reach, the top wind speed we had was 16-17 knots and we touched 22 knots. In the river we had to gybe to the finish and managed to carry a spinnaker all the way.’

Ooooo, look at all that spray when they fly a hull, and the bow down trim. Absolutely Amazing!

You guys have the best accent btw. laugh

Have to agree with Phill. Sailing as a sport is done without engines.

Isn't Raw Nerve for sale now? I thought I saw it on Ebay

What do you think Raw Nerve would cost?

Re: Sydney to Hobart Live - 12/26/08 10:07 PM

According to the google earth feed Scandia is about 6 miles ahead of Wild Oats XI

Impressive sailing from Scandia!!

I have sailed the 5.8 against these boats. they are unbelievably fast.

Re: Sydney to Hobart Live - 12/26/08 11:28 PM

Wild Oats got the better start and managed to cross the fleet on her first tack while Scandia couldn't cross the fleet once she ran out of water (due to the exclusion zone). This forced her to put in more tacks than Wild Oats as they worked their way up the harbour.
Wild Oats won the race out of the harbour by around 1 minute in nearly 12 minutes- reportedly doing 11.75 knots upwind in a 12 knot breese. Scandia was around a minute behind.

After leaving the harbour Scandia went out to sea to pick up a stronger southern current and Wild Oats stayed closer I guess they were hoping there would be more breese closer in.

At least that seemed to be the strategy in the early stages.

In the game of cheque book sailing you would expect Wild Oats to be the quicker boat. So provided they both stuck to those strategies it looks like the southern current has come through for Scandia.

It will be interesting to see what happens over the next 24 hours.

Re: Sydney to Hobart Live - 12/27/08 12:27 AM

Wild Oats has torn their kite. I spotted it not long after they put it up, you could see the seven logo through the hole near the leech. not sure if they have repaired it or not.

forecast looks like the race will be over in about 15 hours.. they are well and truly past the half way mark now.

Re: Sydney to Hobart Live - 12/27/08 07:06 AM

Dazz,
If they finish 15 hrs from the time of your post it would be 23:30 Sat and they would break the race record by around 8 hrs.
I can't see that happening.
I understand the target is 7:40 am Sunday morning.

Re: Sydney to Hobart Live - 12/27/08 07:46 AM

Yeah I agree my maths is a bit out, If they keep up the 16 knots they are going now then they should be in about 4am.

would not be difficult to spend 4 hours looking at the john garrow smile

QB
You probably saw the two A cats pictured on the front page of the "Australian" today (27/12). [Reference image 15 and image 24 at http://media.theaustralian.com.au/multimedia/2008/12/26-yacht/index.html]. They look miniscule compared to Wild Oats.

The sail no. on one of them was GBR 007. The participant schedule on the A Class Worlds site lists this boat as sailed by Chris Field. He obviously wanted to experience what it would be like sailing in washing machine-like conditions.

Dont look very enjoyable, sailing an A-cat (or any beachcat) in that stuff.

Any news on Brindabella (sp?) and the traction kite?
