2009 RTI - 06/28/09 12:41 AM

100 mile race as the crow flies. around an island. Ive sailed it a few times on bigger cats. this year there are some great F16 crews doing it.

I was in a motorboat chasing the fleet and the F16s were hauling butt ....... they were right in the milde of the I20 fleet.....

the F16s were hauling. The fact that an F16 can keep up with the 20s in the level of chop out there is amazing. We were on an 18HT and had trouble making our way through the stuff at times. We were in a group of 5 boats- a Blade, F18, another 18HT, and a Viper. we crossed tacks with the Blade a lot and they were riding up and over the waves and chop very well. The Blade, Viper, and f18 flew away from us once inside the past when everyone pulled their spins. We were able to catch the Viper at the end (not sure why the RC decided to add a bunch of marks to round this year.. I think one of the things that is nice about this race is the no-brainer simplicity of 3 marks to get you out of the pass and then just go around the island. I know of at least one several time winner that didn't round any of the last marks).
One of the blades finished over an hour ahead of us and was with a pack of N20s (from what I hear, need to see results).
Have F16s done a lot of distance racing on the ocean?

Brian/Will finished at 5:30 and corrected 1st on the CFR 20. Bill W placed 2nd on H-17 w/reacher. Kevin Smith 3rd on H20 W/The Green Monster Spin. Mark Smith/DJ on N20 in 4th, followed closely by Chris/Renee on a Blade F16.

Chris had that Blade tuned perfectly for the conditions and nailed several key windlines to walk past several 18's & 20's on the upwind run in the Gulf. I could go on and on about how this was just right for the F16 v others, but no need. He just had a great day and they rose to the occasion! Well done C-R!!!! Downwind in the sound the 20's got past him, but not far enough to beat that awsome upwind performance.

6-10 places were Wilson, Beach, MacDonald on N-20's, Oly and Joana on a Blade, then Craig/Glenn on an N-20. Craig dubbed his new ride Hoofarted II and had a good upwind ride in the gulf, but had equipment problems after a quick flip on the first spin run in the Sound.

All in all it was a great wind/weather year for the event! Accept the personal challenge and mark your calendars for next year.

Your not seeing things Philip that is Rick Adams and his crew is a guy who came down to do the race but snapped a hull in half earlier in the week so Rick offered him a ride on his boat.

WHAT!? I thought that was Rick's boat. Reb Snapped a hull in half on his 18SX? Reb's in my fleet that's why I ask.

I belive he was Reb's crew but once Reb's boat broke Rick offered him a ride and Reb was ground crew.

Re: 2009 RTI - 06/29/09 06:42 PM

It wasn't an easy day, but we got lucky and it was ideal for us on the CFR. After the sea buoy at Destin pass, we only tacked twice and it was a port beat all the way up to Ft. Pickens. Eight hours up and right at two and a half on the way back.

The RC did a great job on food for the sailors... just wish they would have left all the other marks out of the course.
