I'm hobbling around right now on a grade 2 MCL tear that I got during the T500 on the last leg. the ACL is the killer tear though that I'm told you never fully recover from.

Hope he gets better soon, but as an Aussie, he needs to HTFU!!! :P

This is not my experience at all! Talk to any skier. ACL tears are common and can be repaired so you're knee is stronger than the original. If you're serious go Vail and have Steadman clinic do it. They're the benchmark for athletes with orthopedic injuries. You'll be dancin' in no time. Now rotator cuffs, they are a bitch. Long, slow recovery and only 90% after 3 years. The warranty is over, I guess.

What event did Bundy sail when he sustained the injury? Anybody knows what happened and how he was injuried?

Hope we dont loose him from the sport! Bundy and Glenn back on the T aiming for that gold medal is what I hope we see in a couple of weeks.

Now, how about a volunteer anonymous database where beachcat sailors could submit their injuries and how they happened? It would be good to know the extent and how they happened.

Maybe it was something else I was thinking about.

Achilles Heel maybe...

With my MCL, it only really hurts when my leg twists. During the Reggae regatta, my foot slipped off the side of the hull while i was trapped and my foot briefly fell in the water, torquing my whole leg. That hurt like hell.

My latest was a pitchpole where my crew landed on top of me.
Torn connective tissue on the ribs and abdominal wall.Along with bruising and severe pain.
The doc said it will be a while but they will be better. Take a few months off.
Bye Bye NAF-18

Sure, I'll buy that bridge, and can you through in the skyscrapers too?

Once your tear and ACL, no it will never be the same, nor will it be stronger than the original. We have seen cases where these procedures are failing 3 to 5 years after surgery. . We can replace with one from a cadaver, use part of your patella tendon (endoscopic reconstruction) which is the common method, or new procedure that requires weave mesh around the tear. But again it will never be the same.

But not all is lost. There are some cases where some have made it through life being ACL Deficient - Walter Payton being one and the best example on how get along. Once cleared by your MD get the PT going and never stop. Get the "quades and hams" built up to to take the pressure and compensate for the damaged ligament. That is how you're going to make it stronger than before.

This is a common procedure, and any AAOS Board Certified "Sawbones" can do it.

And, no the doctor is not in!

I always wondered where that expression came from - It nicely sums up my attitude towards handling a few knocks when racing in the lumpy stuff.

Hey Chris,

Remember my sudden knee injury that I got at the dike saling my 6.0 flying the kite? Bruce was crewing with me at the time. I was luckiy that my leg was still attached to my thigh, and not ripped completely off at the knee.

That was my ACL, MCL, and medial retinaculum.

That was repaired, therpay, etc., I even did Rough Riuder regatta ~2 months later that year!

All is well now, some 4+ years later

...my wife is thinking about becoming an orthopedic DO surgeon or go into generic sports med.

I'm not looking forward to the bills from that one,

Have her talk to a few "sawbones" before she does. With all the insurance BS these days, and now the federal health care thing going on, many are re-thinking this twice before dropping a quarter million plus on an education and then six years of residency at $50K a year.
