Trampoline repair thread

Does anyone know what type of thread is used for repairing, or re stitching a mesh trampoline? The stitching on the trampoline on my Nacra 450 has started ripping appart. It looks like the thread is all rotted away.

Any help would be appreciated.

Generally, trampolines are stitched and restitched with polyester thread. Polyester does degrade with UV exposure, which is why the stitching gives out before the fabric does. There are other threads that are UV stable (such as acrylic and teflon), but they are more expensive and can be difficult to work with.

I've used sailing whipping twine to hand-sew my old tramp, holding up well. presumably medium, needs a big needle but not a traditional sailcloth needle

it's waxed so is easier to grasp and tighten than normal synthetics of the same size which are very slippery

You can get the threads you want from sailrite.com. If you are going to machine stitch I would suggest no heavier than V-69 and needles to match if you are going to use a domestic sewing machine.
Using a cover over the trampoline is something I believe strongly in, both to save the tramp from UV exposure and to keep the birds away (or small buggers who wants to use your boat as a trampoline at the club).

Great thread! My tramp blew its stiching yesterday on the first tack of the day.

The best thread to use would be Tenara (goretex) but it is very expensive and it isn't actually as strong as polyester. I am a little in the air whether the difference is worth it, especially if the tramp is covered most of the time. I have fixed several tramps and made some for my 31 and have not had a problem (but this is only within the last year.. time will tell). I use size 19 needle with v-92 thread wil a sailrite lsz1 machine. It can be difficult if you are going through multiple layers and probably need v138 thread though I have never tried it.

Sunrise will restich with UV thread for a good price.

We use 2 different types of thread, a heavy duty polyester and PTFE. The PTFE thread is completely unaffected by exposure to UV light, and will last forever. Our guarantee for the trampoline is extended to 5 years with the teflon thread. The polyester thread is the same as used in most canvas shops and if protected from the UV will last for many years

+1 I know of a Sunrise tramp that looks just as good today as it do five years ago after being exposed to "mucho del sol"

Just got mine back from the local shoe repair place, he used the polyester thread and said if it ever breaks, bring it back and he'll fix it for free. Not bad for 18 bucks, took him about a half hour.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I have a spool of black bonded polyester thread, and a heavy duty machine to tackle the job myself. I'm glad it was that easy....I usually have to go out and spend money on something I will only use once. Glad so far it has worked out alright.
