Bundy retires from Olympic competition - 09/05/09 12:29 AM

This deserves a thread of it's own

Quote
"It has been a fantastic week of sailing and undoubtedly some of the best in my sailing career. Lake Garda isI truly a special place for sailing with the cliff faces and picturesque scenery. The lake has not lived up to its reputation of strong wind this week but all the sailors have had a great time. It’s still a fantastic feeling to win the Tornado Championships, its number 7 now. I think it may be quite a while till some one beats that. This year was different, no Olympic or funding pressures we just sailed because we love the boat and had a great time. This week has made it clear for me.. I can announce my Olympic retirement, multihulls is my scene and love sailing. The 49er just does not do it for me."

2 x Olympic Silver Medal (2000 & 2008)

7 x Tornado World Championships (1998, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009)

5 x Tornado European (Nyberg) Championships (1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007)

2 x ISAF World Sailing Games (Multihull) (2002, 2006)

3 x Formula 18 World Championships (2004, 2005, 2007)

Only Gold ever eluded him

I am sorry to hear that from him but I understand the sentiments. I think that he thought as many of us did that the IOC would add an eleventh event back in for 2012. It is a shame that they chose not to.

What a great loss to Olympic sailing. This just highlights what ISAF has done. They've lost arguably the best performed team in modern times by exlcuding the most spectacular and watchable discipline. And a couple of good blokes too!
Oh well, we can now ignore Olympic sailing and jsut watch the likes of Bundock and Ashby in F18's and A's. Now if Bundy got an A .................... I'd like to see that.

Sad that he never won that olympic gold he was aiming for.

The ISAF has what percentage of multihull paying members verses what percentage monohull paying members so what percentage of the 10 Olympic events are for multihulls?

That's not the way ISAF works. There is no individual "membership".

Granted there is no individual membership of ISAF but I do pay them fees. There are the fees that my class world body pays them - which of course are funded through individual memberships of each national body. Secondly I'm required to be a member of Yachting Australia by paying fees through my State Yachting body which are collected by my club. Without paying all these fees I can't compete at club, State, National or World level. So I'm over a barrel and forced to support ISAF. So I reckon I'm entitled to be pi*#ed off with them for taking my money AND exluding my preferred style of boat from the Olympics.

I also fear for the long term future of the Tornado. Most of the boats bought in the last ten years have been by olympic hopeful campaigners - then on-sold after the campaign. I can't see too many people buying a new Marstrom now. Very sad.

Besides all this, one can have an individual (paid) membership as well.
