Tennessee sailors, I have a question.

Tennessee sailors, I have a question. - 09/15/09 01:50 AM

Does Tennessee require registration on a beach cat?

I just got a ticket last weekend for not registering my boat. I despise the Minnesota DNR, and refuse to give them money for anything. I own a house in Tennessee, so I figure why not say its from Tennessee.

The boat must be registered in TN. BUT there is no license required for the trailor.

how much was the ticket?
FL just changed its laws to require a reg..and title... i am waiting to see when they start to enforce it.

John where is your house in Fl for sale? Does it come with a F-18?

Carl,
If you take the money you saved the money by not registering you boat for the last 3 years, $15. Apply that to the fine, $200. You will come out ahead in another 37 years!

It only costs $5 to register a cat in MN?

I really like how these D*** politicians think. When I purchased my boat there was no title issued for a -20ft sailboat w/o a motor. So how do I now register a +20yr old boat w/o a title ever issued for it. So I'm going to tell them that the boat is grandfathered since it was produced before the law was changed to it's current form.

Also there used to be a clause that boats racing (ie: racing sailboats) did not have to be registered.

The politicians are just a bunch of a**holes just looking for more $$$$'s they can piss away on pet projects ....

My boat has no title but I had no problem registering it in NC with the wildlife commission. I think they require titles now for > 14' in length.

Getting a title for my untitled trailer through DMV was another story, an indemnity bond for a $200 trailer is ridiculous.

BCarlson, when I bought my new H16 in 06', I bought it in Iowa which has a 6% sales tax, we had a 6.5% sales tax at the time. The frickin' Minnesota DNR wanted me to kick in that .5% difference to the state of Minnesota. That pissed me off, and I would not have registered that boat either, but I had a loan on it, and needed to get a title. So I paid those m.f.er's their $37 that they thought I owed them. If it had an engine I'd understand. What I don't understand is why the **** wasn't pulling over one of the at least 500 powerboats that were hauling butt up and down the Mississippi, instead of screwing with the sailboat that was barely moving.

Re: Tennessee sailors, I have a question. - 09/16/09 03:17 AM

i assume the $0.50 is to cover all actual expenses associated with administrating tag regulations. the rest goes to other MN govt. budget items.
I am being sarcastic (shocking i know) but probably close to true.

that being said.. i understand reg fees and have little problem with them. Reg and title is needed to monitor, manage, and investigate... just like the thread with the abandoned hobie 18... if it had reg numbers they would have solved the case much faster.

ok, let the bashing begin...

You can say you live in CT

Connecticut law requires that all boats with motors, regardless of size, and sailboats powered by sail alone, 19 1/2 feet or longer in length, be registered and numbered before launching. If you purchase a boat that is currently registered, you are responsible for seeing that it is registered in your name.

I don't have to have numbers, just the tag saying I psid the tax.

Karl, we all make choices and we have to live the with consequences of those choices. You chose not to register you boat and eventually got caught 3 years later. That was a risk you evidently were willing to take when you decided not to follow the law and properly register you boat, so don't be upset with the Minnesota DNR for enforcing a law that you willingly broke.

I'm always amazed when someone gets caught doing something wrong and they try come off as the victim by making remarks like: "What I don't understand is why the **** wasn't pulling over one of the at least 500 powerboats that were hauling butt up and down the Mississippi, instead of screwing with the sailboat that was barely moving."

Next time your here (dunedin) lets break some laws together... maybe picket the tax collector... smile

Hey Karl, just wanted to make the little hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

I am not exactly sure how much it costs to register a boat in MN for 3 years, it is ridiculiously low though, $15 is what I remember, maybe $27. I recall thinking what they charge can barely cover the handling costs.

FYI in Wisconsin you don't have to register a racing boat, so as long as you are racing you should be okay. Explain that little known law to the Sheriff as he writes you a citation!

In MN boat trailer's can be up to 9'-6" wide without special permits, written to accommodate boats with a 9'-6" beam I suspect. Stretching the law, one could argue the legality of those fully enclosed catamaran trailers that exist, after all they were purposely built to haul a boat.

Karl, you are forgetting the fact that at first glance, you sort of look like a felon, so that would have been their probable cause as opposed to pulling over all those dickless wonders in their Bajas and Crownlines screaming up and down the river.

I'm not upset, the Minnesota DNR still isn't going to get my money, and I wasn't ticketed by the MN DNR, it was issued by a Wisconsin game warden. And it'll cost me at least $735 to register my boat, so I've got room for at least 2 more tickets. grin

He's got to pay that 0.5% sales tax difference.

Re: Tennessee sailors, I have a question. - 09/17/09 01:24 PM

Wow, $735 to register your boat is a hefty sum. I think I would have been willing to risk getting a $200 ticket as well. Why so much?

Re: Tennessee sailors, I have a question. - 09/17/09 01:29 PM

I think that must be the 6.5% sales tax for the boat he is currently sailing. The registration fee is very minor, but he has to pay the sales tax before he can register it.

Re: Tennessee sailors, I have a question. - 09/17/09 02:12 PM

Yep, gotta pay the sales tax, and now its up to 6.875%, when it was 6.5%.

Try 9.75% here in Long Beach. I love the social services - there's a new park a block away and my street was repaved last week, but I cringed when I bought the new boat.

DNR = Department of Natural Resources. Keep in mind that they do some very worthwhile things for Minnesotans. Back when I had a job, I worked with the DNR and equivalent agencies in several states across the South while investigating hazardous waste sites. The DNR Karl encountered (Game Wardens are employees of DNR) does valuable work that should be funded to the benefit of all Minnesotans.
