Reminds me of using 5200

Reminds me of using 5200 - 11/10/09 03:45 PM

I will never forget one time Mary and I waited for low tide and used 5200 to seal the cruising cat we had. Mary was under the boat and I was in the hull using this stuff. We both had it stuck all over us for it seems a season. Mary got the worst of it.
Check out the Ray Stevens Song:

Once you open a tube of 5200 somehow it's going to get on everyone working in the boatyard!

I grabbed a tube of BLACK 5200 by mistake last year to use on some through transom bolts on a boat that was freshly re painted. No time to go back to the store for another tube, so I'll be reeeeeeeal careful....back to the store for acetone and a WHITE tube. If someone opens a tube accross the yard and I'm sitting down having lunch, I'll have it on me by the time I'm done eating.

I once repaired a damaged rubber rubbing strip (hefty 2" wide and high moulding) using black 5200. It was a portion running across the bow. I needed to fill lots of voids and almost used a whole tube. Worst part was removing the (garbage bag full of) sticky masking tape.. My clothes were shot after that.
Weeks later we were late back and couldn't get to the ramp in time to catch the tide for haul out. 6 guys pulled the 1000lbs boat out by the nose, up almost two feet with no damage at all.
That stuff is indestructible.

3M adhesive remover works very well at removing 5200 from your hands after working with it. Given the mixture of aromatic solvents in it I don't think its a great idea to contact this with your skin on a regular basis - but for the odd cleanup it works great. The real secret is to bust out the nitrile gloves when you work with 5200. It's awesome stuff but awful messy.

WD-40 works like a champ, and is a lot less harmful. Save the adhesive remover for doing shots. crazy

Lighter fluid; Use liberaly then light. If you're not carefull, it will remove more than you want.

I didn't.. i put 4200 where I don't want it. Thought it'd be easier to use something good to get it off rather than to screw around

1st step is to go to the Goodwill store and buy some $5 5200 clothes.... Then listen to the song Rick posted, and squeeze.

Song was good!
I don't use 5200 now very often. I've seen it pull Gel coat and fiberglass off. If you ever use 5200 think twice - you may need replace the item and will fight the 5200. I just use silicone caulking it comes off. Sharp safety blades work be careful or bleed.
