Remember, over there "seafood" means it came from the water, not that it's fish. Ducks' feet fall into that category.

Barbequed chicken feet are crunchy.

Beware the tiny "spare ribs". They aren't pork, and they certainly aren't beef.

GO CHRIS!!! Bradshaw and Kathy Ward (Women). Chris has been sailing very well this year, she's fast and started training early in the season with Ken Hilk. Here they're fast too (Open).
(Note: Chris is a member of our fleet and we're proud to have her there!)

The mast rake looks excessive in that photo.
Posted By: mbounds

Re: 2010 Hobie 16 Worlds in China - 08/15/10 03:37 PM

That's because the jibs aren't up. The jib halyard tension will stand the mast up some.

Still, they're not far off. World-class H16 racers like lots of rake.
Posted By: HMurphey

Re: 2010 Hobie 16 Worlds in China - 08/15/10 03:50 PM

Greg,

The H16 is raced w/ alot of mast-rake to "load up" the rudders since the boat has no daggerboards.

How do you set the mast-rake???? With the jib halyard.

When the mast is raised on a H16 the mast is "over raked" ... the main is hoisted and then the jib ... next the jib halyard is tensioned pulling the mast up-right reducing the mast-rake .... but usually set so that when the mainsheet is sheeted in tight, that the mainsheet stack is "block to block" ....

Totally different proceedure and set-up from your ol' P19 .... or that new F16 you have .....

I have watched many of the Div11 H16 racers use this proceedure .... when I'm rigging my TheMightyHobie18 next to them at Hobie Points Regattas.

Re: 2010 Hobie 16 Worlds in China - 08/16/10 10:01 AM

First race is in the bag:

Masters - Race 1
1 AUS R.Waterhouse/K.Waterhouse
2 RSA W.Edwards/L.Edwards
3 KOR P.Byeong Ki/Y.Hae Kwang
4 NZL H.Handley/P.Evrard
5 AUS B.Engwirda/W.News
6 AUS B.Tardrew/S.Turnbull
7 AUS A.Duchatel/E.Curtis
8 CHN C.Steilberg/J.Wong
9 BRA M.Dubeux/T.Jacobus
10 AUS B.Schahinger/C.Cartrwright

Opening ceremony and the crowds on the beach were UNREAL! There were thousands of people there for the opening and all of his was on full production TV broadcast live. Pretty wild. They really showed interest in the boats with lots of the crowd following down to the site and watching sailors rig. I have a bunch more images and some video on the blog.

Rod Waterhouse took another 1st today. William Edwards also took a first in this morning's races. They are on the water again after lunch for, an intended, 3 more back-to-back.

Sunny, 91 degrees and about 10 kts or a bit more.

If you have to ask who "Worstie" is, you don't want to know. I think he is Keith Moon reincarnated.

However, I don't think he's dynamited a toilet - yet.

He usually crews for Aaron Worrall.

Must be something about Australia, it's like a witness protection program. Everyone seems to have a nickname, most seem to end in "ie".

Then there's the girl who's registered as Nicole Kidman...

Might be influenced by Bundy Rum. Frackin aussies call me Bluie, so there's the "ie" thing again.

Legend tells that Worst News is Bad news` brother, I seem to remember being told stories about Bad News & Worst News Hughes.. never been to a Hobie Worlds, but some who have will know. If I`m wrong about this, apologies. But the stories go back to the early 90`s, so they`ve been around a while.
Good to see William & Lucinda are doing ok, though they could go one place better. smirk

Re: 2010 Hobie 16 Worlds in China - 08/22/10 06:12 AM

Final day of Women and youth event. We got two races off this morning, but during lunch a front has come over and stopped the action. 12 races in the can, so we have a solid series. Seems the leaders of each are well ahead, so no racing required to determine a winner but, we are on hold for a few hours.

Seems really odd that wouldn't be decided in advance and placed into the NOR or SIs, of course I can't find either of those docs online. Were they really unsure of how many competitors they would get?

It's hard to fathom that wouldn't be decided at least before the boats hit the water to start the on-site qualifying, I must be missing something?

People drop out at the last minute - or just never show up to registration.

It's always been a shifting number, back to the days of provided boat Nationals.

In fact, the event / rotation formal is virtually identical to the way provided boat Nationals were done.

They even named "alternate qualifiers" at the first cut party in case someone dropped out for whatever reason.

Also, if they have a "reduction in boats" (rare, but it does happen), they can adjust the number of qualifiers.

Usually they put a minimum number of qualifiers in the NOR. It's just math.

Re: 2010 Hobie 16 Worlds in China - 08/26/10 10:05 PM

Yeah, I knew it was fuzzy based on entries. And we all know that if you are at the bottom of the pile, you get chucked if boats start to become unsailable. Alternates totally make sense as well.

I am still surprised it would be THAT much of an unknown going into the qualifier (actually, by the morning of Day 1 of qualifying, this should be totally clear, barring boat breakage).

You've been hanging out with those New England judges too much. Lighten up, Francis.

We never knew who was going to make the first cut - they'd announce the results at the party, starting with first place and working down. The suspense was impressive.

Only when they got to the actual last person qualified would they say, "And the last team to qualify for the round-robin is . . . "

Hey Matt,

Outstanding job with this, as always. FWIW, whenever I mention things like live mark roundings on the web, supplied-boat worlds, etc. to other major sailing organizations, they tell me it can't be done...

BTW, is that DSQ correct for Jerome? What was that about?

Re: 2010 Hobie 16 Worlds in China - Wrap - 09/02/10 11:23 PM

Could easily have been a rule 69 issue I heard.

Port starboard downwind with Rod Waterhouse. Rod hailed a foul... then protested when Jerome refused to 360 I take it. Jerome used a "witness" in the hearing that was later determined to be false... no where near the incident. The re-opened protest ended with a DSQ for Jerome. Could have cost him the championship. He still was pissy about the whole thing and nearly caused a riot at the award dinner.

Re: 2010 Hobie 16 Worlds in China - Wrap - 09/03/10 02:59 AM

Yikes, sorry I asked. Should have been a 69 (certainly Rule 2). I didn't know that stuff was still going on (the "witness" thing I've heard from prior worlds).

Why do the trophies look like Emmy awards? wink

Thanks again for all the great coeverage!

Re: 2010 Hobie 16 Worlds in China - Wrap - 09/03/10 04:28 PM

That's just one of the awards they received. All participants got a big glass plate mounted on a stand at the cut party. Winners got medals, the Emmy looking things, plaques and some other stuff I don't even remember.

Does not sound like Legal was a real popular winner.Always makes things a little sour when you win but lose the respect of your fellow competitors. Like the Quote from Paul Elvstrom,"if by winning yop lose the respect of the competition then you really did not win".Not exactly sure that was his exact words but same idea.
