DN North American's in Thunder Bay - 03/04/10 12:51 AM

Just got back from watching the DN North American's being held here in Thunder Bay.Talk about a committed bunch of sailors. These guys came from all over North America and overseas to compete. Not only that they did not know it was going to be here in Thunder Bay untill Sunday.fifty-eight boats showed up.Met up with and had a nice chat with Matt Struble. These boats are awesome they were flying around in about 6-8 knts of wind.I might get a chance to try one out Saturday.

Iceboaters have to have a great communication system, because they never know where they are going to sail until the last minute, and sometimes they have to drive hundreds of miles to get to the place that has good ice.

We hosted the DN nationals at Indianapolis Sailing Club a few years ago on a last-second change. The Michigan club which planned to host it got hit by a snowstorm, and those boats can't plow through snow. So everyone packed up and moved here, because we had ice but no snow on the lake.

May be moving up to Warren, Pa so maybe I will have to learn ice boating and maybe come over sometime to Pu-in-Bay.

Sailed for about 3-4 hrs yesterday with my daughter in about 5 knts of wind. This boat will probably do 15 knts in that wind speed. The apparent wind you build is crazy. What a great transistion into soft water sailing.Talked with Matt Struble,he said sailing these boats is as close as it comes to the feeling of sailing an A-Cat.
