Turnout could go up another 50-100 or so, some only go if the weather is nice.
Usually the Swedish Marstrom guys only come when it is really light as well.

But that's no fun!.... there just has to be a super version of one of those two boats at least..

Perhaps... it's an all carbon boat with curved dagger boards that is known as the SUPER VIPER that is much talked about.

he he....

No Nacra F-20s registered, so maybe that's what it is. That's what it's for.

Re: Round Texel of 2010 - 06/08/10 09:31 AM

They are pretty casual about regestration, especially if you are getting there during the week for the Dutch Open.

there will be plenty of F20s - its what the boat was designed for!

#2 son will be there on the SL16. Wish I could offer some reports back, but he is rubbish at using his phone once at an event - ask his Mum!

I was going to say!....It would be astonishing if the Nacra F20 doesn't make a firm showing.

If memory serves me, there were well over 800 boats in the Round Texels of the mid 80's....Interesting starts, you can learn a whole new language! blush

Participation over the last few years has been in the upper 500s/low 600s.

I don't remember it getting over about 850 boats [Only!]

Your namesake is the only person to have done all the round texel races to date.

He will be sailing a Nacra F20 this time

I stand corrected (edit made)!
We are actually from the same home town, and sailed at the same club way back then (with him sailing circles around us!)....haven't seen him in a long time, but looks like he is still going strong! The new F20 should be fun to watch!

I remember one (around '85 or '86) where half the boats around us came back significantly damaged after trying to punch through....It had blown hard in the days before, but the day of the race the wind dropped but the waves did not!

i am no expert, but i don't think that is what is meant by "pointy side up". i dont think it is referring to the bowsprit

It was '85
We were just about to launch on our Dart 18 and the boat next to us went first, flipped and came back on its side. My wife went to help the crew but he had broken his leg! She didn't tell me till after we got back safely to the shore at the end of the race.
In fact, it was the Katwijk waves that haunt me most. Sailing the Dart 18 Europeans there was a nightmare.

Yes, I remember some pretty nasty stuff! Especially with a due west wind it can be a bear. What year was the Dart Championship?

The Katwijk euros were 1986; the waves scared the crap out of me at the time!

Totally mega waves; launching was exciting; at times you could not see the boat next to you if the wave set was such both boats were in troughs. And the Dart 18 IS exciting downwind in the big stuff!!!

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question: Why is there not even one A-Cat on the list?

Posted By: Tony_F18

Re: Round Texel of 2010 - 06/12/10 09:49 AM

IMO the a-cat sailors only show up when they can be competitive, which is usually in lowwind conditions.
They usually make the decision to go on Thursday when the weather forecast is reliable enough for Saturday.

Go back and look at the wave/destruction pictures, would you take your $20,000+ baby out in that stuff?

Re: Round Texel of 2010 - 06/12/10 10:51 AM

The picture you mean was from 2005, conditions where pretty extreme that year and it is what people remember.
Most years the waves are actually not that big.

Many do. It looks like conditions will be not that smooth as 2009. For saturday 19th we now have a forecast around 20knots and 2meter waves. Even its pretty early the stable trend (complete week like that) of this prediction makes it likely that we have a windy edition of the race.

Re: Round Texel of 2010 - 06/13/10 08:41 AM

Predicted wind direction is NE (slightly offshore), with some luck there wont be any surf at all. smile

Re: Round Texel of 2010 - 06/13/10 09:44 AM

You mean, with some luck there will be a lot of surf... because surf launching is a shitload of fun.

Just loaded the Team VMG SL on top of a trailer that was already full! and sent the team on their way

Say Hi to Adam and Nikki if you see them on the beach. Bright orange SL - easy to spot

Especially when floating upsidedown on the downwind leg! smile

Re: Round Texel of 2010 - 06/16/10 11:58 PM

News from the beach....

1, William Sunnocks M20 Viper lost it's mast today; no details yet
2, Chris Sproat's Viper got T-boned; It's been repaired by one of the other brits out there
3, One of the Brits popped the deck from their F18; think this has been repaired too.

Not sure if william has a spare mast with him. Massive waves and big winds!
Posted By: Tony_F18

Re: Round Texel of 2010 - 06/17/10 05:24 AM

Will Sunnock broke his mast while trying to set a new record attempt yesterday, a new Mastrom mast is on its way so I hope thet get it here before saturday.

Andi and Martin (f18ht) also broke their mast, they too will get a new one (1 shipment from Sweden).

A lot of wind (20-25kts) and waves yesterday, getting thru the surf is no problem but out on the race course things where quite rough.
Cool to watch a cat nearly jump over a wave going upwind.
Forecast for saturday is not looking to good either, 25-30kts NW, it will be straight on-shore and waves will be huge!

Will has no spare mast but acording to another brit there he is going to use another M20 mast

According to Y+Y William will try and repair "with a pole if needed".

Looks like the mast simply snapped, judging by the pic; william and Oli went into windward.:

Re: Round Texel of 2010 - 06/18/10 07:20 AM

It is going to be a rough round Texel as the forecast shows a lot of wind from the Northwest. I wish everybody good luck and try to keep the boats in it's original shape . The surf will be with the NW wind huge.

Not thru, the most real a-cat racers are going to the Worlds in Italy , starting next weekend and most of them are heading of this weekend to have some practice at Cesenatico. The Worlds is a bit more important then Texel and with a valid change that you can be hit by somebody else , it is not worth to take that risk because you will not have the time anymore to repair. The weather forecast is also not looking good , for nobody actually.

Such a shame! Some teams travelled a long way for that one race.

proper dogs off chains day tho'

didn't they used to have the option of running it on the Sunday?

That's Texel.

The sailing might be off, but the BIG party on the beach will still be on.... And that is SOME PARTY!! Beats all other regatta parties I've been to!

The cyclone is called Friedericke (at least in Germany). I tried to play with her yesterday. We went out, she sent us straight to the ground after 5min sailing, bearing away on reach for the first time. We made a massive pitch pole. My crew flew 10m or more strafing with his ear one of the forestays. When I looked for him, I found him on the top of the mast. Nothing broken apart from one sail batten, my crew has still both ears on his head, but some pain. Later we learnt, we had 35kts and gave a good entertainement on the beach. Too bad, I didn't have my camcorder...

Cheers,

Klaus

Re: Round Texel of 2010 - 06/19/10 05:41 PM

We slogged to Scheiveningen for the Dutch iF20 nationals, rigged the boat, sat on the beach watching the waves for the weekend, packed up the boat and slogged home.

What must that coast be like in WINTER!

Adam and Nikki won first place in the small cat division of the Texel Dutch Open!
Congrats!

Re: Round Texel of 2010 - 06/19/10 09:25 PM

Yes, good news.

One day swimming and then good sailing for the other 2

Texel had never seen an SL16 before so they had to measure the boat before they could get the results right.

thanks Tony

80 - 100cm crack under the waterline. Partly the fibre layer is broken through. A classic no-wind-weekend-job to repair ;-)

Danke der Nachfrage* Klaus, lg Uli

At least you had wind! It's Kieler Woche right now and for the next days the forecasted maximum is 6kts. The olympic classes cancel race after race ...
The F18s start of Thursday, and I sincerely hope that the conditions will change till then!
