Cambridge Regatta? Was Fantastic!! - 07/16/01 03:57 AM

The weather gods smiled on 18 sailors from Pennsylvania Maryland and Virginia at Cambridge this weekend. Saturday saw B 4 conditions for the first race with flat water. (When a Hampton capsizes it immediately becomes a permanent obstruction on the course and neither god nor a powerboat can right the thing) After lunch the winds were B 2-3 for the second long race (1.5 to 2 miles A to C 3 laps! Temperatures were 80 with no humidity. Sunday saw B 2 conditions shifting to left with a strong current running on another perfect day on the bay!
Chris and Pat Begrow were first in Hobie 16's
Followed by Previous winners Yates and Judy Dowell
With Bill and Joshua Kast in third

Open class had WF Oliver winning with his Javelin A followed by a Tie between Mark Schneider, Dart 18 sloop single handing and George Kuney and Susan Bloomgarden on their Hobie 20.

Top cat of the Choptank and the engraved perpetual trophy went to WF for the second time followed by the Begrow’s, George and Susan and yours truly on a DART!!!!

Trophies were lovely (and very shiny) engraved pewter plates.
Results will be posted on the CRAC web site soon.
The campers loved watching the sun come up on the swans on the river. The kids converted the playground slide into a water slide with Harry Murphy's hose and were really disappointed when a mom vetoed Glenn Ross's idea of putting the baby pool under the slide!!! Harry treated the starving masses to Kielbasa and Italian sweet sausage with fresh rolls for lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Crabs were out of this world price wise this season and so the Cambridge Yacht Club served up ribs and chicken. The band was lots of fun on Saturday night!
CRAC would like to thank Ernie who is retiring as RC chairmen this year and Harry Murphy for coordinating all of the amenities for us at the park (New porta potties, running water and a terrific beach launch site). Next years Race Committee is asking for suggestions on how to make this an even better regatta. (We will take more of this weather! Please!)

Next event is an unfortunate conflict between the Special Olympics at St Mary College on Hobie 16's and the Open Class at the Barnegat Breezer in New Jersey.

See you on the water
