Still looking for Condor info

I'm still trying to piece together my old Condor but still can't find the bridle and front crossbar info. I'm also curious as to what exactly was different about the Condor vs the Hurricane 4.9. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated it.

What do you specifically need to know? (I used to build them)

I'm missing the whole bridle and bow cross bar. I can remember how they looked but need the lengths of all of different parts. I was also curious what was exactly the difference between the Condor and the Hurricane. Not a lot of info on either boat on the net that I'm able to find. Lastly, can you build me a new set of hulls?

The H49 was a Condor re-branded. I THINK Reg carried over some of the Hurricane/White Formula parts and upgraded the beams to stiffer ones; Some downhaul changes were made (I think) and I this sails were made of Mylar.

The first thing is to establish who built your Condor and how - wood, solid laminate or foam sandwich. Do you know the original sail number? Do the beams/mast/boom have gold anodising (IYE I think) or silver (Sailspar)?
Sail numbers 999 to 104? were built as Condors in foam sandwich with Sailspar spars and Hurricane 5.9 style rudders. Early rudders stalled/ventilated too easily. Many of these later Condors were converted to the 4.9 spec which had larger section mast (stiffer & more buoyancy) and larger sailplan. Left to die in the early 90s after Reg White invested in the Hurricane 500. The 4.9 class association then went twin trapeze. John Mazzotti (Condor designer) always reckoned he put too much rocker in the hulls. It may mean you sacrifice a little top end speed but it's a great 1/2 man boat with loads of buoyancy that can take some seriously crazy conditions.

Re: bridle/compression beam. I've seen some early boats with compression beams attached to the hull sides. The compression beams on the post #999 boats attached via a slotted beam end onto the chainplates. Try Sailspar for spares.

Mine was built by Zygal and the spars are gold and I do believe you are correct about them being made by IYE. My sail # is US 242. I'll have to scan some of the pics from the 70's when we first got the boat and put them on here.

The differences between the Condor and 4.9 have pretty much been answered.
To replace your bowbeam, strut and bridle it's just a case of measuring up. The tube was 6061 aluminium 1.25" dia with a 0.25" wall. The compression strut was 600mm so it's a simple case of a bow beam that goes from bow tang to bow tang (allow an overlap of approx 5mm beyond the tang) slotted to take the tang at each end. A large s/s deck eye is rivetted in the centre of the beam and the compression strut has it's base slotted to allow it to sit over the eye. A bolt then passes through the strut to secure it to the eye on the beam, the bolt also secures a s/s loop to take the tack of the jib. The top of the strut is again slotted but this time to take a 2" dia s/s ring - again retained by a 5mm s/s bolt - which has the bridle wires attached and to which the forestay is tensioned.

Thank all of you for your input as it's been very helpful. Jalani do you recall there being any issues about the hull's seperating? One of the issues that ended up cropping up on the old Condor after we had sold it was the top section near the rear cross member came apart from the main section of the hull. They had taken it to somebody who attempted to repair but it kept coming apart.

On the early boats (pre 350ish) there were issues with the beam trays (if that's what you are referring to). Later boats were re-inforced in the tray area. Separating deck/hull joins at the beam trays in later boats wasn't an issue that was at all common. The decks are bonded to the hulls via a lip that is approx 1" - 1.5" wide as part of the hull side moulding and held down with a strong resin mixed with microballoons. If a section of deck is coming off it's invariably best to remove the deck and re-stick it than to try and get a paste into the opened crack.

It sounds like you have one of the earlier boats. Post up a pic or two of the damage and we'll see if we can advise.

Hi. New to the forum and learning my way.

I have taken possession of a circa 1974 Zygal Condor. It was a one-owner boat that has been garaged for the past 10 or more years. The owner ran into health issues and has not been able to sail. I ultimately took possession with a group of cat sailors at our club in Connecticut.

I have seen some inquiry about Zygal on this forum, but not too much. I am curious whether there is interest in the boat. It is back together on a trailer with - we believe - everything accounted for. Sails are in decent shape.

We are planning to sell the boat and purchase a used, more forgiving boat for use by club members. This Condor was sailed principally on Lake Michigan in a fleet of similar boats by a skilled sailor. It has pretty substantial rigging and my understanding is that she is not a novice boat.

I will post pictures as soon as I figure out how. Please share any information or thoughts. We would like to find a good home for her.
