Bullets

The Isotope Nationals are coming up this weekend, so I made these keychains to give out to the winning skipper of each race. Take a bullet - get a bullet. Each cartridge is laser-marked "Isotope Nationals 2010" where the "I" is replaced by the Isotope sail logo. I made them in a variety of calibers. From top to bottom: 5.56 NATO (a.k.a. 223 Remington), 7.62x39mm, 243 Winchester, 7.62 NATO (a.k.a. 308 Winchester), and 30-06 Springfield.

I hope they make the event even more fun.

Fleet 204 has the best bullet tradition I've ever seen... Bullet Shots! Skipper and crew must do a shot (rum, I think) for every race they win.

At the end of the day, usually at the regatta party (sometimes at the RVs)...

We're all getting too old / lightweight. In the old days, they used to do these shots on both Sat and Sun, now it's just at the Sat party (if anyone remembers).

If it's a week-long event, it's every day, especially the last!

I consider one of my top 5 sailing achievements to be having earned a bullet shot (once) at a Division 16 regatta, racing in Hobie 16, A fleet.

BTW, there really aren't a lot of people getting 5 bullets in one day in that fleet...

Yeah, try going through an airport with your keys on that.

At one Hobie 16 NAs, they gave out the shotgun shell that marked your victorious race - on a little wooden base with the race number on it. That was cool.

Bert Rice did that for the Pensacola Beach Alter Cup, too - it was neat to have the shotgun shell with the race number and time written on it. Cool idea.

Of course, then Lloyd went and shot himself in the butt...

Doing shots of rum for a win on the water is a great handicap system!

Does that mean that outside the USA, "bullet" is not a slang term meaning a first place finish, or that Americans are not as hoplophobic as Europeans?

Now, using ammunition for this purpose? Not something you would see outside the US or banana republics. I did not even imagine we would see it in the US until today. Nicely done, but a terrible idea even if the word "bullet" is commonly used all over for scoring one point.

The Swiss army has long been a militia trained and structured to rapidly respond against foreign aggression. Swiss males grow up expecting to undergo basic military training, usually at age 20 in the Rekrutenschule (German for "recruit school"), the initial boot camp, after which Swiss men remain part of the "militia" in reserve capacity until age 30 (age 34 for officers). Each such individual is required to keep his army-issued personal weapon (the 5.56x45mm Sig 550 rifle for enlisted personnel or the SIG 510 rifle and/or the 9mm SIG-Sauer P220 semi-automatic pistol for officers, medical and postal personnel) at home with a specified personal retention quantity of government-issued personal ammunition (50 rounds 5.56 mm / 48 rounds 9mm), which is sealed and inspected regularly to ensure that no unauthorized use takes place. The ammunition are intended for use while traveling to the army barracks in case of invasion.

When their period of service has ended, militiamen have the choice of keeping their personal weapon and other selected items of their equipment. In this case of retention, the rifle is sent to the weapons factory where the fully automatic function is removed; the rifle is then returned to the discharged owner. The rifle is then a semi-automatic or self-loading rifle.

Maybe he's referring to wasting good ammo; since in most countries, it is neccessary for settling elections (or in lieu of elections).

There is at least one country with weapons in more households in % than the US: Israel, but they live in a problematic neighborhood.

IMHO that report is bogus, it says 1,9% of Dutch households have guns.
Since you are not allowed to have a gun here under any circumstance I highly doubt those statistics are correct.
There are people who have guns in their house because they are members of a shooting club, but they are not allowed to have ammo, they can only shoot at the range for which membership is mandatory for anyone who has a license.
Having been in Israel once, I was shocked to see how many people wear guns (no toy guns either, .45s or something).

the Australian stats are also problematic. To calculate who has legal weapons in is difficult since the states do not give out the numbers. The closest one can find is the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) believed there were less than 9% of households having a firearm. The numbers in proportion would be higher in the farming areas as opposed to city.

I see that the UK doesn't register in the statistics, everything that goes bang or is a bit sharp is banned here!

GBR competitors even have to go to France to practice some Olympic sports!

The French numbers are also utterly ridiculous. The gun laws in France are draconian. I don't know who compiled these statistics, but they can't be correct.

The laws and attitudes to guns changed in Aus when we had dickheads killing as many people as they could to set a record. The breaking point was the guy that went to a tourist spot and shot over 30 people including a mother and baby girl with one shot. When they caught him he asked if he had set the record for the most killed. It shocked our whole nation and now its even against the law to hold a cartridge unless you have a gun licence. My kids know how to shoot and gun safety but if they took one of my empty cartridges to school there would be a big drama.

That bullet for a bullet is an awesome idea! And if it's only appreciated in the U.S.; then so be it. Even better.
If you're not in favor of this idea, then come up with a better one for your area and share it. Don't piss all over someones attempt to grow the sport. Lots of work and passion probably went into making those. And you can bet they aren't free.

Seriously though, we had great winds, 15 boats, and 5 outsanding races over two days. John Norton (who usually races a thistle) came down from Raleigh to be the PRO and did an excellent job. The Waccamaw Sailing Club opened their grounds for us and put on a fabulous steak and fish dinner. The bullet keychains went over well, although I only managed to give away two of them.

My dad has a spent casing (brass) from a H&H .700 NE "big game" round that his tour chaperone test fired for them while on a trip to the dark continent a decade or so ago. (I think he said it was truck mounted, but offered in a double rifle configuration for the truly massochistic). It was apparently intended for charging elephants in the African bush, which seems to be more of a problem these days since the elephant population has rebounded somewhat (and they have lost their fear of humans, are running out of habitat, etc).

In any case, THAT should be the "bullet award" for the miracle win - especially if the likelihood of a repeat is non-existent (sort of like a "follow-up shot" using the .700 mag. I suspect you'd have a broken shoulder on the first shot.) I think there is something like 19,000 J of energy from that round. The bullet is 1000 grain weight

Funny this topic came up...on ship shape TV yesterday they had a program on defense against pirates. They even had one of the Mossberg's there with their array of weapons, and took the viewer on a trip through their factory.

The law enforcement expert on the show suggesting putting a round through the hull just below the water line angled downward so it made two holes...one in the side and one in the bottom as it exited. They seemed to ignore the fact that many boats have closed cell foam flotation in the bottom. Good luck with that technique on a Boston Whaler.

The weapon of choice was a 12 gauge shooting riffled slugs. After the shot to the hull you were to follow up with two rounds to the engines so they couldn't follow you...they didn't say anything about how to do this while the "bad" guys are spraying you down with automatic weapon fire from an AK47 ...LOL

Since Cats don't have engines I guess if you are a really good shot (Ex Navy SEAL), two slugs to the mast base or chain plates might suffice in lou of the engines...
