Re: Dumb thread idea's while I'm avoiding doing my job..... - 05/13/11 06:06 PM

My first sailboat was a $600 Merrimack 14. It was a cat rigged dinghy, looked more like a rowboat with a mast stuck in the front. I just wanted to cruise around Portsmouth Harbor but when I asked an -old salt- about sailing lessons, he said, "You should get rid of that old thing and buy a racing boat, you will learn more about sailing in one summer of racing than you will in three years in that thing..."

That's when I got a Laser and into racing.
Mono's:
Merrimack 14
Laser
505
Flying Scot
J 24

Then I sold everything to buy a house, when the twins came along.
JY 15 (when the twins turned 6, it's for them, honest honey)
Day Sailor (the Family Boat, HA! That boat turned me to the Dark Side, the Cats!)

Cats:

Hobie 18
Nacra 5.5 SL with spin kit (Thanks to Brian Karr!)
Bimare Javelin 2 (F18HT, thanks to WFO)
Inter 20 (Thanks to Ding and Capt. Kirk)
Blade F16 (Thanks to Matt and Ding's boot in my nutz)
Pridle 18 (for $500! Thanks to my neighbor!)
Hobie 14 (also for $500, thanks to another neighbor)

The last 3 are in the back yard right now, calling my name but the lake looks like glass, damn weather man got my hopes up this morning when he said 10-15!

The lyin' bastards! Can you imagine if I 'got it wrong' as much as they do, I'd be dead by now.

Hobie Wave (bought for $500 and put that trailer under it, gave it to my 10 year old son)

Holy crap!

While the only boat on that list that I would actually want to own is the Hobie Wave, that is RIDICULOUSLY impressive. Who the hell breaks even on ONE boat, let alone profits on so many???

Kudos, dude! What the hell is the secret???

Rowing skiff
Penguin
Hobie 21 (co-owned)
Laser
Supercat 15 (co-owned)
Lara S, the 27ft hydrofoil assisted foding tri.

The last one cost 100 and was sold a few weeks ago at 160.
FX variation and inflation make it look good, but in local currency we just broke even. In reality we lost 10 years inflation in terms of local purchase power.

So true. I bought my Hobie 21SE for $2400. It was my first big boat and I figured I was going to keep it for a while. I had a modern EP spin made for it and a new main and jib from Clavert. Then a new trampoline. I remember someone at 05 Tiger Worlds in Santabarbara telling me that those boats were pretty valuable. In October or so, a guy called me wanting to buy it (it wasn't for sale). I told him the only way I'd sell it was to get a N20. He gave me $8,000 for it. Tha put me in the ball park for my N20, which I love. But, I wish I never sold the 21. I never really liked the H16 but it got me into sailing.

Re: Dumb thread idea's while I'm avoiding doing my job..... - 05/18/11 01:40 PM

OK, Ok, MAYBE I have reduced some of the numbers of cats out there, but they gave their lives so others can live!

Whenever I cut up a Hobie or Prindle, I kept about 8 inches of the bows. We made really cool trophies out of those for one of our races.

I have donated probably 15 boats and a TON of parts to various sailing camps and the Boy Scouts.

Probably 20 sets of hulls have gone on to be lake pontoon boats or some kind of Franken-trimaran project.

I have recycled 3600 pounds of broken masts, beams and steering systems.

Re: Dumb thread idea's while I'm avoiding doing my job..... - 05/19/11 04:57 PM

Cat sailing was HUGE areound here 20 years ago, then people just let them sit and rot in their back yards or on the beach. I started collecting broken boats and parting them out to support my sailing habit.

It has also allowed me to try out a lot of different boats. Now, I'm down to my SC15 and my A cat. I have a 14 Turbo that I'm selling and a Nacra 5.2 project that I'm refurbing for someone.

It really is a hobby to me because I enjoy breaking down and putting together boats. I am an IT person, so I don't produce anything physical. When I work on boats, though, I get the satisfaction of an end physical product.

How did you like the Albin Vega?

The Albin is an amazing, well-designed full-keel blue water boat. You can take it out in nearly any condition and survive.

Drawbacks: Max speed of 6 knots, but only when the wind speed is 30+

Came equipped with a Volvo 2 cylinder gas engine with side-draft carb and variable pitch prop. When the boat healed to starboard the float would get stuck, dumping gas into the bilge. Every time I fired the engine it was fingers crossed the fucker wouldn’t explode.

It really is a hobby to me because I enjoy breaking down and putting together boats. I am an IT person, so I don't produce anything physical. When I work on boats, though, I get the satisfaction of an end physical product.

Very nice Dan. I was just curious- Keep it up!
