I am putting together a new MKII and like some new features, but am disappointed about others. What do other owners think? Like The new rubber nonskid on the decks The new boards and rudders finish looks great and the carbon trailing edges The boom has a thicker wall and cam cleat for the outhaul The boat finish looks better (hopefully no cracks will show up) Daggerboard wells look better and have nice shims on the bottom (hopefully they won't fall off like the F20c) New material snuffer bag The carbon tiller is awesome
Dislike It would be nice if Nacra actually had a manual for the current boat you were putting together Nacra footstraps would be nice A jib downhaul led back to the tramp A internal spin tack line Get rid of the forstay chain plate with a turnbuckle (at least send one without the tab) A loop with a knot instead of a pice of velcro for the jib attachment to forstay A up what ever for the boards Updated spreaders Blocks and line to run the jib and downhaul out to the sides of the boat 16:1 downhaul Plastic washers at the dolphin striker post and diamond tension bolt to help with corrosion Heat shrink tubing around the swages on the rigging Better line for the jib halyard ( the one they send breaks after a couple of uses)
Over all I like the new boat but for the extra money over the older version that we had you really don't get much extra just the rubber nonskid, newer boards/rudders, newer cut sails. What are others opinions ?
I have been on the fence about a new boat vs the daggerboard conversion to my 08 Infusion. If you had to do it again, would you get a new boat, or do the conversion? BTW....the 08 (your old boat), is in immaculate condition with new Glaser sails.
Dave some of the things you mention are upgrades that can be purchased with the boat such as footstraps and 16:1 downhaul The forestay chain plate, I am surprised you got one with the tab..most have been shipping without afaik. The upfracker for the boards you can put in yourself but would be nice if they just did it.

The jib downhaul on the F20c I have found to be more of a PITA because it seems to always become uncleated.
I agree on the jib downhaul. When was the last time you actually adjusted this on the water and it made a noticeable performance improvement? I don't think we ever touched it on the N20, and ours was rigged for on-the fly adjustment. I'm curious to hear other peoples opinions on this; I find the adjustment more useful on slower boats where you might want wrinkles in lighter air and less in heavier air. In the F16/F18/N20/F20 the speeds are usually high enough that you want things tighter.
Frequent adjustment on every F18 I've ever sailed - even on the Tiger and Infusion, when the skipper sent me out on the bow between races in big waves. LOVE the adjustment on the front beam.
I think the operative phrase here was "between races". It's not like you'd be tweaking that thing as you round A or C marks, right?
Might be good on a straight-line distance thing in varying conditions, but I agree that it might clutter up the deck for something that's not used regularly
I'll weigh in here, we've thrashed our Mk2 pretty good this season and worked all the bugs out.
Like: Everything that you do, much improved fit and finish compared to previous boats. Small things like a new boom universal, velcro jib ties, and chafe protectors on the hull make a big difference. Deck foam is awesome. All rivets in the beams and spars have plastic washers for insulation.
A lot of your dislikes are options in the race package. Nacra footstraps, 16:1 downhaul, vulcanization tape, etc. The jib downhaul setup is really slick, a twin sheave thing leading to recessed cleats on either side of the front beam.
We opted not to get the race package (save a little money and build as we like). Things like the spin pole and board uphaul we build differently than some other boats. We'll put some detail photos up on microwindracing. Only a few complaints from us: A boat set-up manual would be nice, basic stuff the tuning guides don't cover. Stern plugs as an added option, not a necessary fitting. Don't drill and rivet the jib block to the pole, easy to break. Spreaders are clunky for sure (some boats are running awesome carbon ones!)
It's still basically an Infusion, but with a bunch of small tweaks to make for a better product. I don't think building a Mk1 today would result in a much cheaper boat. If you look at the big three builders, all the new designs are getting more expensive, I guess it's more of a market thing.
We did get the race package and all the options and did not get the 16:1 or footstraps. They did put the cleats on the mast for the 16:1 though. Our jib downhaul is a 12"pice of line and a cleat on the jib. I did see the jib downhaul system you were talking about on the F20C manual even though Mike's F20c does not have it as well as a lot of other stuff. I also could do without the boat plugs .

We usually get a new boat every couple of years instead of just getting new sails and to help put more boats in the class. Since you have new sails the only thing you would be gaining is the boards and new nonskid and a few other little things. I don't know what the board conversion cost, but you would just have to do the math to see if it is good for you. We have not had the boat in the water and it is not even put together all the way yet so others will have to comment on the sailing abilities.
