There is a live webcam showing the crane where the AC45s will be launched from. I am not sure there will be any live coverage today actually. It could be that it starts o Wednesday but am not 100% sure.
Going down tomorrow (Sunday). Check out the Village watch the races then back home buy the evening. We will start pretty early to get down there from Long Beach.
I was at the event on Sunday. Great day for watching! We were camped out right on the pier next to the USS Midway. There are two fingers you can go to the end of without a pass. The middle one you cannot. That is where most of the teams are. We were right next to actually looking over the leeward mark, then the finish line. That is the best place to watch unless you buy a pass to be on the Midway, which would be a great seat but no closer to the action.
My fiancé's luck is unbelieveable. Not only does she happen to be in town for the event, but her uncle is flying one of the camera helicopters and has a seat on it to watch the race from
Going through post-race review now. Spithill and Artemis were OCS, Bundy shot out and let from the first mark to the finish. Spithill managed to foul their chute somewhere during the race (did not want to furl/unfurl), finished 5th.
They are saying they did a penalty, W/L before start. But, for the first few minutes the commentators had no clue. I thought they were bragging about all the access to the technonology that they have in the booth (feeds from RO, umps, etc.)?
Hobie was represented yesterday! We had a group from the factory, Ron and Deb Lane plus Jeff and Hobie Jr. aboard.
Fun to have the boys sailing past our boat for a big hello. A lot of these guys have done Hobie and F18 racing over the years.
We had an 80 foot motor yacht positioned right near the start line. Was a line of 3 large ones and then the huge (150'?) sailboat right there. Great day! Cats ripping it up and choppers buzzing all around. We had a choppy video feed, but who needs video when you are this close? I do wish we had better video though. They must have caught some good action! The salon had huge windows and a big screen TV. Viewing from on deck was spectacular!
That huge sailboat was probably Larry Ellisons yacht, its a big blue ketch. They must have pushed pretty hard to get from Plymouth to SD in two months. AC45s still doing 17kts in what cant be much more than 10kts of wind.
OMG, Annie just said that because of the apparent wind generated by multihulls, the sails are trimmed in more while going downwind "than NORMAL boats."
So much for not taking the Hobie out of the sailor...
Wow, Artemis was ahead by about a minute at the windward gate, failed to cover, Aleph got a huge puff to the left side, and is smoking down the course. Lucky for Artemis, the course was shortened (distance), so they are able to stay ahead at the next leeward gate, but not by much (17 seconds)...
Tony, Luiz: Other than feeling like they got screwed by the abandonment, why do you feel Aleph "should have won" the last match?
It seemed like they were outsailed at both starts. They caught a lucky shift in the first attempt (abandoned race), and nearly caught another in the second.
Yes, they won all the races prior to that, but why do you think they "deserved" to win?
BTW, Artemis definitely know they were lucky to escape with the win. I got tired of the looping video with the commentators (it kept going back to the prior windward mark rounding as the boats were approaching the final leeward mark), so I changed it to the onboard view/audio. You wouldn't believe the looks and comments from the Artemis sailors as they approached the finish...
Clearly his first time at the helm of one of these, onboard audio/video is hysterical... "Just come down a little Larry, just 'cause these guys are racing..."
Just got back from SD and the AC. One of the guys in our group got a room at the Hyatt Regency, had a screw up on his room for Friday night, got upgraded to the PRESIDENTIAL SUITE FOR SATURDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT, and a late checkout today(Sunday)!. Unless you got a ride in a helicopter, there wasn't a person in SD that had a better view of the racing this weekend. Panoramic views of SD! Birds eye view of the course! The racing was incredible! Winds were in the 15 range today, made for some very fast racing. Ellison had nothing on us! What a great weekend! Big shout out to fleet 42 AZ. And a major THANK YOU to Jonathan and Ruby for the accommodations at the Hyatt. They’ll never know how close they were to having a Coleman stove cooking taco meat on the balcony. Jonathan and Ruby, Scott, Jim, Manny and Julianne, Kelly...Thanks for an unbelievable weekend!!!
BTW, Not a mention of the racing on SD television, (that we saw), and the security guy at the Holiday Inn(where some of the teams stayed, and which overlooks the births of 4 Americas Cup winning boats, including "AMERICA") said, in response to Jim telling him that we were in town for the Americas Cup Races, "Oh yea, the golf tournament." @#$%^&*()_)(*&^%$#
