STEEPLECHASE INFORMATION!! - 11/14/11 07:32 PM

The Key Largo Steeplechase will be staged out of Gilbert's this year. Boats will be launching there and finishing there.

Room rates are very reasonable -- $59 for second floor and $69 for first floor. Launching is free if you are staying there. I am hoping most of you will be staying there both Friday and Saturday nights, because this will make the motel happy.

If you are local or not staying there for some reason, the launching fee is their standard $20.If you want to launch someplace else, that's up to you.

I have talked to Reinhard, the owner of the resort, and he is familiar with the regatta and will be expecting the boats. HOWEVER, my advice is to just make your room reservation and not ask any questions of the reservationist. It always results in complications!!

I agree, don't stir the waters, keep a low profile. Problem is if you ask the desk clerk, she won't know the answer, and so will bring your question to the attention of others there and they might not know the answer either, and make an edict that may get us all kicked out.
SO MUMMMMMMMMMMS the word

Wouldn't the owner let the staff know that we will there? What do we tell the staffer that tells us to get out once we arrive?

I assume Reinhard WILL tell the staff. Just don't ask the reservationist things like, "Where should I put my boat when I get there? Where do I launch? Where should I put my trailer?

These are things the reservationist does not know, and she will get all flustered and tell you to talk to somebody else, yadayadayada. It won't be a problem if you just drive in, check in, and take your boat to the back to rig it.

I assume Gilbert's is hurting a little since the bridge was put in, because it has to be difficult for them to get business off the road. I am hoping that they will be happy to get the business from us. They won't be turning anybody away.

I've been launching from there for years. Quiet is best.
Great bar, great food, the rooms are just OK. Good for sleeping.........

Ahhh...but it's only a matter of perspective

The more Rum the better. (less conscious thought)
The more $ the better. (less stress about filling the gas tank on the way to the Keys)
The more wind the better. (less slow sailing)
The more beer the better. (less work)
The more difficult the better. (less boredom)
The more pain the better. (who said this?)

Is this a situation where the guy leasing the resturant and Tiki bar doesn't want us and the owner of the place does?

Re: STEEPLECHASE INFORMATION!! - 11/17/11 07:02 PM

I don't understand your question, Dave. I don't think the Tiki Bar and Restaurant are leased out. And I don't think anybody there doesn't want us. Or maybe it's just YOU they don't want. LOL

I'm just saying that it causes confusion when you ask questions of the desk clerk. Different desk people define the policies in different ways. I don't think anybody wants complications -- either sailors or the resort owners. I know I get totally confused every time I talk to a different person there.

don't think there is any problem for people who reserve rooms there. The only questions are about sailors who do NOT stay there. They will have charges for launching and trailer storage over the weekend. But those problems and costs are similar to what you would have at the Caribbean Club.

If you're NOT staying at Gilbert's and don't want to pay them for trailer storage for the weekend, we have room for some trailers in our yard.

Well any time someone tells me to do something but then follows it up with don't tell anybody what you're doing always makes me skeptical. It wouldn't be the first time we've been told it's okay to stage somewhere only to find out on arrival nobody onsite knows anything about it and wants us out, or to pay. So yeah, I might be a little "twice shy". There is nothing worse than making a time and financial committment to something only to find out that your destination/staging area is up in the air on arrival. I'm just sayin.
