Spin Treatment: holmenkol vs Aerospace 303

Spin Treatment: holmenkol vs Aerospace 303 - 04/02/12 07:33 PM

Preference? Holmenkol runs $50 and treats 2 spins; Aerospace 303 is $15 and will treat probably 10+ sails. I treated sails with H in the past and noticed they are more slippery but not sure how long that lasts. I've used the A303 and its slick as snot and it brightens old colors as well. A303 is not a water proofer and H is advertised as such. over the last week, I treated 2 sails with H and 1 with A303, I'll post some results as they get sailed.

important! don't treat your trampoline with A303, don't ask me how I know. Tacking! whooooosh! splash!

Sailed the A303 today. Super slick. If you have a seasoned spin and want to brighten it up. Try the 303 and see the color and slickery improve.

its billed as a UV coating as well. In experience, its more persistent too. like i said, don't coat your tramp with it.

Is he suggesting to use an asian escort on your spin for better slip?

I went out with the A303 spin again today and I have to say if you don't want to spend the money for the H, the A303 is the bomb..

Capt,
Did you buy a gallon? What ratio mixed with water? Buy it locally, or mail order? Thanks!

I bought the bottle of aerospace 303 from West Marine. 15 bucks. the Holmenkol is available online from various places like apsltd.com. I mixed the H as directed in 2 liters of water, its enough to coat 2 spins easily.

Excellent! My experience with Holmenkol has been that it's wonderfully slick, put that condition doesn't last overly long. Thanks Capt!

Do you brush, spray, or dunk in bucket these coatings?

On the F16 I used a large tupperware type storage unit, and dunked it with reasonable results, didn't completely get all surfaces. For the big spin on the 22 we laid a large pc of plastic on the ground and sponged it on on hands and knees, flaking the sail as we finished a 3' wide section. That seemed to work well, messy, hands and knees got saturated.

Doesn't 303 spray on?

i found trowing the spin and product in a LARGE plastic bag and "agitate" was a good way to get the product spread all over

303 is sprayed on. H is not recommended to spray so sponge it on.

I tied the clew and tack to my fence and the head to my back porch.i used bungies so i could walk into the sail and get to all of it. When i finished one side i flipped the sail and did it again. i had 2 sails going at the same time. I then left them out for a few hours to dry. it lasted just enough for the 2 sails.

oh, i used the same hanging sail arrangement for the 303 but not necessary. just lay it out on the grass and squirt away and cover all the surfaces.

Seems odd. Doesn't seem like the best application technique to maximize adherence.

Do you have some idea where the expensive and slippery coating went? It could flake/flog off and be lost in the wind or it could scrape off when dousing and perhaps make the snuffer parts slick. Hmm....odd....where'd it go?

Perhaps i should clarify: There was enough product to apply to two different sails.
