Rick,
I use UBB for my forum and don't have any trouble at all. It isn't UBB.
What kind of screening do you have for new members?
I screen all mine personally before I approve them. It looks like you let everyone in who registers.
Thanks, Jack. I went over all the registration admin and found what I needed. In order to register it gives you a random scrambled message you must put in the box. I think that should do it. Rick
I used a customized response required that virtually stopped spam registrations. Most of these people are foreigners from China and eastern block countries... they don't speak English, but can type in random letters. That won't stop them... tried that.
Ours requires an answer to a question like "what is your favorite hobby?" Duhh... sailing. Or where can you use a sailboat... water. What is the name of the website you are visiting?... Catsailor. You can add multiple answers that fit.
They can't seem answer these questions.
Next... moderate the first 1-2 posts of new users.

It is sad what has happened to the internet. EVERYTHING on the internet is trying to sell you something or scam you. There is no shame or ethics. The spammers are like muggers, violently marketing to you, and they will keep it up until the whole system is corroded to uselessness. I find the internet is less useful to me than it was ten years ago. And, I definitely use it less than ever. So now it is here at Catsailor, too. What a killjoy.
Hey Rick, that reminds me, about time for an update to your book, isn't it? To include all the 'new' spinnaker cat (Formula clases), A cat and Wave techinques, etc. that have come about since that one was written.
yep, the spammers got pretty aggressive during the night. I have been trying to stay on top of them more diligently and that has seemingly been working. However, I have noticed that a lot of them are using the same IP address, so I started banning those IP addresses. That should help. Rick

Hopefully, Obama will be in that house another four years.
wrong thread, Pete. Didn't you start that "part duex" one?
as I'm fond of saying; vote early, vote often now, WHO to vote for is an entirely different discussion and not worthy of debating on a SAILING forum. Unless you're discussing who the ISAF chair should be...
yeah, I saw that. and while personal attacks on the leader of a country seems a bit childish, it is a First Amndment right.
Thankfully, it's also my right to ignore any and all comments posted by anyone (except the asian escort guy...)
Grow the f*ck up people. Its a completely fair statement. Barry is just another black man living in Gov't housing. If Romney is elected would anybody get wound up if it someone said just another white boy living in Gov't housing? No, they wouldn't. Now, if it said Romney, just another cracker living in Gov't housing would they get wound up? Nope. It'd be dismissed rather quickly.
Don't worry Pete, Cap't Obama will be at the helm for another four years. Fortunately for him, this country is made up mostly of racist's who are in denial, and are constantly told, and under societal pressure that their views on race are wrong. You may disapprove, you may not like it, but there is no such thing as wrong. Furthermore, its going to be either Obama or Romney, whats the difference? One's a commie, the others a god damn socialist, and they're both worthless liars not worthy of the effort of putting them on a pike.
God damn it, I hate political correctness.
Sorry for the hijack. I just hate this guise of intolerance guised as tolerance bullsh*t. Its okay for you to hate someone because they don't like, or flat out hate another, but there's nothing wrong with the hater hating the other one.

In one case it can be inferred that the democratically elected president is hated simply because he is black. In the other case, a thinking person may dislike the person that appears to be proudly associating himself with race-based hatred specifically because that kind of thinking and actions based on that thinking (prominent 100 years ago) are ignorant and detrimental to everyone involved.
The two are not alike. Sometimes political correctness is simply correct. Condemming racism, not defending it, is the proper thing to do.
This site may soon find itself limited to like-minded Southern white boys telling Captain Noah jokes to themselves. Carry on, if that is what you want.

Unfortunately I've come to believe you are quite correct and that is the inevitable outcome.
fwiw, I'm unconvinced it's okay to hate anyone or anything except in the most extreme cases.

So when did the president become Black? I thought he was half black and half white, isn't that tan, mocha, or mulatto? He should only get half of the guilt ridden race vote if that's the case. Douchebags.

So the Rev. Jeremiah Wrights racism is OK because it comes from a black man? Not exactly an equal playing field. Here's a little tune about being stereotyped.
And before you start in on the Nazi skinhead thing do a little research on Ian McKay and Minor threat.
You know so long as (the late)Lee Atwater, Karl Rove, Roger Ailes, Grover Norquist, and Rupert Murdoch have convinced you that Obama is not for you, their work is done. All the rest of the propaganda is just a means to that end. You don't have to swallow the entire pitcher of Kool Aid. I have trouble understanding how Jeremiah Wright is a threat to us. The Koch brothers want their politicians to protect their wealth, that I can understand. Maybe they sail beach cats too. But somehow I suspect what is good for the superwealthy is not actually good for the rest of us. Trumped up concern about black on white racism, gun control, or where Obama was born, is just a useful tool for them.
I apologize for not watching the suggested video or doing the suggested research. I endeavor to avoid being a tool for the goals of Karl Rove, et al.
But somehow I suspect what is good for the superwealthy is not actually good for the rest of us.
Why's that Lonestarcat? It's those evil super wealthy that do all the innovative things, its those nasty super wealthy that supply the rest of us jobs, its those horrid super wealthy that drive the economy.

That's just not true. Consider Gates and Jobs, neither was wealthy when they started out. Iirc, IBM came to Gates for help with their pc and they still couldn't build a competitve system.
Oh dear, another delusional liberal who thinks that the Koch brothers are born from the bounty of the devil's loins, however Soros and his tentacles consist of the dust of Jesus' remains.
You know so long as Soros, AFL-CIO, David Brock, NYT editorial board, and the children of ACORN have convinced you that Obama is for you, their work is done.
If he doesn't build cabinets for uber rich guys, then I bet he builds cabinets for guys who do work for uber rich guys. Those uber rich guys pay them cash for their labor commodity, which in turn is used to purchase Karl's labor commodity.
I work for an insanely rich guy. His net worth was about $35mil this year. He provides me a great living in return for my labor commodity. (Along with 5000 other employees - his company started with like 20, back in 1996 btw)
My Dad was a construction worker - built the DC metro, then sold life insurance door to door during the doldrums of the 70's recession after he graduated from a fine school with a great liberal arts degree. He ended up becoming the executive vice president of the largest custom home builder in America - by selling homes to mostly uber-rich people. He employed thousands of workers to get this done, and in the process, provided his family a great living.
Liberals hate the term "trickle down" economics - as well they should. The mainstream media has led you to believe that all of the rich people take their dollar beels and stuff them under their mattresses, or shred them into confetti for some extravagant display of their wealth at a friend's dinner party. I don't know for sure what this view of wealth and economics is based on, but I have a good feeling that its motivated by jealousy.
Damn Tad, I'll bet you're a lovely shade of purple at the moment.
Calm down and spend a few moments in supplication to those wonderful people to whom you owe your humble existence.
Actually Pete, I'm quite pleased at the moment - especially with my "humble" experience.
As for spending time worshipping those who I "owe" my living - You seem to not understand something which I will explain -
I owe them nothing other than that which they pay for. They pay for my labor commodity on weekdays between 9 to 5. Sometimes the weekends and sometimes late at night. That is the nature of the contract that I have with my employer. Its no different than purchasing a car or a house, or a washing machine. Its an agreement between two willing parties where both end up getting what they want. My employer wants my labor commodity, and I want compensation for such. If either of us become unsatisfied with the terms of the agreement, we are free to terminate our business relationship and seek other arrangements which may be more beneficial to either party.

You kinda make the liberal's point with the bit I highlighted above.
If you have a fire that heavily damages a forest (or a financial melt down that damages the economy), the forest doesn't get healthy again by making the big trees bigger. Oh, the big trees would like everyone to think so now that there is less competition - but it's the little trees (small business) that revitalize the forest. The small businesses in this country are capable of some really smart innovation if they can keep getting some daylight.
And as to your last point, the truth is that middle and lower income people inject a SIGNIFICANTLY larger percentage of their income back into the economy that the rich elite.

IBM built the entire system, Gates (et al)only created the operating system (DOS = DUMB operating system) Gates was brilliant and lucky that IBM went along with it, and they (MS) kept the licensing rights.... and leased it to IBM

You'll notice I did not drag you into this, you found it all by yourself.

Directly, yes, I agree 100%. But its those rich bastards that give the rest of us tools something to do, and something to spend with. Just about any company, in any industry can grow, and play command and conquer with their competition. There are very few Cornelius Vanderbuilts, Henry Fords, Sam Waltons, James Hills, Andrew Carnegies, or Larry Ellisons in the world. It takes brains, luck, leadership and a serious work ethic to become a captain of any industry, and it gets harder all the time. The opportunities aren't there like they were two hundred years ago. Labor costs, regulation on all fronts, and taxation make it really tough to run a small business before you even take competition into consideration.
Every market has a niche that can be exploited, and used to grow into other regions of your discipline or to expand into others. I've found mine, people who spend more on there kitchens than I did on my entire house. (and then some)... But I have no luck, I'm a horrid leader, and I ain't all that bright. Work ethic is the only thing dragging my company through the mud. I also have no illusions of grandeur, I won't be taking the corporate jet to Monaco anytime soon. I also don't want to employ a few thousand people, hell just a couple of idiots on the payroll makes me want to go dig the requisite number of holes in a field somewhere.
The forrest thing isn't a real great analogy, because when the markets are burning down, thats when the big tree's in business make a killing. "When there is blood in the streets, buy land" is one of the most solid statements there is. You just have to have the smarts to know when to hang your butt out with risk, and when to rein it back and buckle down for the ever impending sh*t storm lapping at your door.
Keep in mind though, on a long enough timeline, the end result of capitalism is a monopoly. We'll all be working for Wal-Mart someday. Thankfully wars, death, and revolutions keep things in check nicely.
the forest doesn't get healthy again by making the big trees bigger.
If I'm going to indulge your flawed metaphor/analogy/whatever it is...
What liberals want to do is cut down the big trees to make fertilizer for the saplings.
Doesn't seem like the optimal solution to me.
As for percentage of incomes back into the economy, I don't doubt it. Where is that income coming from? The fruits of their labors - which overwhelmingly comes from the machinations of the private sector economy (well, for now it does). One of the many important cogs of the private sector is capital investment by those evil evil EVIL rich guys (like Bain -- another skeleton in the boogeyman closet for you to demonize no doubt)
no, you need the birds that poop the undigested seeds from other areas to start the forest, right? If they can make it across the forest, that is... and have their bird-cards.
or the coconuts that float over ....
sweet... we started another thread of useless political drivel... because there's not enough out there already...
Its also the big trees that survive, that drop the acorns that sprout the next generation of the forest.
OK, I agree that analogy has gone far enough ;-)...although, I am picking up a few acorns with my graphics business, my home business was not born from one.
Hell, I can go on but I know you guys aren't going to recognize or compromise on any points so I wont waste my time or yours.

Posting anyone's point is never a waste of time. Regardless of agreement or not, I like to know other opinions to help me understand more about both side's arguments. (Percieved) right or wrong, everyone's opinion is worth something.

I figured you'd just been listening to RUSH (not limbaugh). And Yes the analogy sucked.
Quote
"The Trees"
There is unrest in the forest There is trouble with the trees For the maples want more sunlight And the oaks ignore their pleas
The trouble with the maples (And they're quite convinced they're right) They say the oaks are just too lofty And they grab up all the light But the oaks can't help their feelings If they like the way they're made And they wonder why the maples Can't be happy in their shade
There is trouble in the forest And the creatures all have fled As the maples scream 'Oppression!' And the oaks just shake their heads
So the maples formed a union And demanded equal rights 'The oaks are just too greedy We will make them give us light' Now there's no more oak oppression For they passed a noble law And the trees are all kept equal By hatchet, axe and saw
I think we've discussed cat sailing enough. Damn near everyone knows everyone else on here. We're just outta topics, outta good ideas. We've come full circle.

So the money you made at your corporate job was not used to build the Garage Mahal and start your business?
not discussing...just correcting
Actually no...the business I bought and built (with a loan from a relative...that I paid back with subsequent business proceeds) in 1999 has built the 'mahal. My wife gets all the proceeds from my corporate job. ... which is also a situation that likely has me tethered to a corporate job so she can have health insurance.
You mean...we've...reached the END of the Internet??
Damn, now we're gonna have to go back!
well, the END is December 21, 2012, so that makes sense. Go see the movie, Timbo. You house gets wasted. So does mine. Don't worry about mortgage payments anymore
Anyone want to give me their Gunboat 60? Or even their F-24 mk2?
Hey, I was out today on the lake for 2 hours of upwind-downwind fun, working on trapping downwind with the kite. At first it was blowing about 15 gusting to 20, then after about 4pm it started to drop off quite a bit, so I came in, but it was great fun while it lasted. Now it looks like glass out there...but at least Debbie brought the lake up a foot or two.
We are still way below 'normal' though, could use another 4 feet in the lake. I just hope it doesn't come all at once with 100+mph winds, like it did in 2004!
And Jay, if I can skip my mortgage payments, I can go out and buy the Gunboat now! You want in?
Ahhhh...rush. Best show I think I've seen (although stupidly too loud in Cleveland). Presto tour...Neil Pert- extended snare rat a tat after a lengthy solo with a rotating drum set bounces a drum stick off the snare up into the light rigging, stands up, faces the crowd, sticks his arm out, catches the drum stick, and they rip into the next song. Awesome.

"Once seen as the land of opportunity, the U.S. today is grappling with rising inequality and a political system that benefits the rich at the expense of others, resulting in lower growth and risking the death of the American dream, according to Nobel prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz."
Yes, no - type, kinda like a comedian, but not, Yes!, seems like it, i thought i was clear, you are funny! Like a clown (didnt we go over this already?)
Capitalism in its purest form is a demanding mistress. Those that succeed win big, and the opposite for the losers.
Extrapolating pure capitalism to its theoretical peak efficiency would, in effect, elimiate the concept of "middle class" as being inefficient.
with opportunity comes opportunity cost (risk). seems we're a bit more risk-averse these days.
On the other hand, the commonly referred to "socialist/communist" theorms could be argued as a model of capital inefficiency at the expense of societal progress.
