Prindle 19 furler set-up question - 06/07/12 11:09 PM

I bought a used Hobie "under the bridle" furler. Has anyone used one of these on a P-19? From just briefly looking, it appears that due to way this furler attaches, once the furler is attached to the bridle wires, the furler will actually bring the sail tack up an inch or two. I'm also guessing I will have to shorten the "upper forestay" by this measurement as well as the length of the upper swivel which is 2 5/8" pin to pin. Does this sound correct? I'm guessing there are a couple of different ways to do this, I just want to keep it as painless as possible.

Sounds correct. I did this to a Nacra 5.2 with the same under the bridle furler. Not sure about the P-19 but you could also shorten the bridles in stead. In hindsight, that's what I'd do. OTOH, if you change the angle of the bridle wires you increase the load on the bows, potentially causing failure. Just be careful.

I did the exact same thing on my P-19 years ago, and as said above, shortened the bridles. If you want to switch back or to something else it's easier that way.

Don't ask me how I know but make sure you need to shorten wires before you do it. It doesn't take much to raise the mast and check to see if you can get the mast rake you want, with the additions.

In many cases we rake the mast much further aft today, than when the boats were designed or the rigging you are using is not standard.

It really sucks when you shorten everything and then have to add an extender to get the mast rake you want.

Did this on a Prindle 18 years ago, and ended up going to the Harken setup which I feel was a cleaner application.

Your going to need to shorten the upper forestay along with the pigtail as well to accommodate the top roller barrel along the bridal wires. I believe we went with 2.25" on the bridals and 3.5 on the upper forestay pigtail

Give Joel @ Murrays a shout. He keeps an encyclopedia on this stuff and can hook you up with all the messurments
