Hydropter tries for 100?

This is where I get off, what's the point?

I suppose I'm jaded but I'd much rather see a speed competition on a 1000 mile ocean course, or a 24 hour run. Jus' sayin'..

But it will be interesting to see how the other cat sailors fall out.

I think the records Hydropter and Vestas sail rocket are chasing are over very short courses. On the other hand some of the big ocean racing tris are hitting 30+ for hours at a time, iirc.

So which is the greater accomplishment? Short bursts of very high speed or long duration at less extreme speeds.

Since this is Cat Sailor I'm guessing most of the readership is going to come down on the side of a record for 100s of miles or 1,000.

But I'll toss the guy on his Tiki 21 crossing the Atlantic both ways, single handed in a single season into the mix of profound achievements.

They're simply different types of records. As long as there is significant effort in trying to break any particular record, the achievement is notable. One craft that is good at one is probably not so good at another.

Hydroptere does have goals of setting long distance ocean records. They have to start somewhere.

I suppose but H. seems to me the equivalent of a AA fuel dragster of the sailing world. I'm personally more interested in Le Mans.

Have you let them know this? I'm sure they would switch up disciplines if it gets you as a fan.

Different strokes for different folks.

I would suspect some things they learn in the "sprint" discipline might be beneficial to the "Le Mans" discipline.

Maybe stuff like "what happens at the bleeding edge of this performance envelope?"

Or "why does this material/shape seem to fail at this point?"

I guess Glamorous Glennis made big leaps for aerospace, even though it was a "short hop" craft

100 kmh and "bleeding edge" would seem appropriate.

But a night's sleep and I see things differently. I'm interested in what the individual can do. Like the guy in the movie "World's Fastest Indian". I really don't have much interest in the other stuff. I've no idea who is involved in the Hydropter syndicate but I'm guessing it's more than one guy in a garage. ymmv

It's one guy, Alain Thébault, that provides the money and energy into Hydropter but he has a team. He's been working on this same general foiling configuration for decades. He would be a fascinating guy to sit down with over a beer.
