Adding Turnbuckle to Diamond Wires - 07/29/14 01:01 AM

Looking to redo my standing rigging and one recomendation was to add a turnbuckle to the dimond wire for a NACRA F-18 to sort of fine tune the mast.

My question is, has anyhone done this and if so what are you recomendationds for adding tensuion to the wires...

Check out a couple of A cats, most have a adjustable diamond set-up that can be adjusted on the water.

We have them on the base of the mast on the newer F18's. 17 mm bolt tensions or loosens the settings. If you want a turn buckle Ronstan makes a nice one that is adjustable.

I used the type above on my tiger and you can get it with a small arm so it is adjustable on the water.

This looks like a great replacement for the nuke proof turnbuckle that NACRA orginal put on.... Would this be that same for adding an additional tunrnuckle? Just looking for something to compensate for the rigging it self as they are never the same...

be careful... dialing in 30 or up 45 on the loos guage with a wrench will almost certainly gall the threads..

Usually you flip the boat... pull a diamond off the spreader.... dial in the threads you want... bow string the diamond back on and off you go... can be done on the water as well... but a PIA...

The a cats build a lever arm with an internal three to one purchase to dial in tension.... the two turn buckles set your low setting and straighten the stick for wire variablity...

That piece might be different... but I would be care full.

If you're just trying to equal up the sides spin the longer diamond wire to tighten the strands and shorten it( takes a little experimenting) or add one turnbuckle to one side. You only need it once though and it's one extra failure point. I also had one of the factory Nacra "nuke proof" turn buckles unthread the rod from the bronze barrel on the first leg of the 2001 Worrell. Cost us 2 hours right out of the gate. Lucky it didn't cost us the rig.

Man, the F18/F16 (and other boat types) systems are so much better now.

Different, not better. Definitely not tougher, maybe more ease in adjustment. They have their problems too, been down that road also.
