Flying Phantom for sale

Flying Phantom for sale - 03/20/15 10:32 PM

It's either an early April Fools prank, or a sad day for the seller.
I bet it goes quick

The only type of sailing you can do is on DN boats up in Madison.

Hey now. When you're down south in Madison, they get pretty long summer, sometimes two or three weeks worth.

My company HQ is in Madison. My boss says that I'm not allowed to come visit them in the office unless its -20F or less. I could have spent all winter up there from the accounts of my colleagues who live there.

Karl the II,
Did you make an offer?
Get with it.

There's nothing worse than having the money to buy something you want, but the smarts to not spend it.

If I wasn't planning on spending probably $300k on putting up a new shop this summer, it'd be sitting in my driveway already

Re: Flying Phantom for sale - 03/24/15 07:17 PM

Think they would take 30k cash?

I told one of the guys in craw to buy half and I'd trade my viper for the other half. He didn't seem impressed with the idea.

I count at least three good problems to have here...

Somebody bought it. Wonder who??
Posted By: F-18 5150

Re: Flying Phantom for sale - 03/27/15 08:34 PM

The sale will be made public when the time is right I'm sure. I got out bid and they didn't say who got it. Time to start watching.
I think Steve and Juke bought it to take line honors in the GT-300.

Re: Flying Phantom for sale - 03/30/15 10:09 PM

Bought the boat, put it together, has a life change, then puts it up for sale with never using it....

I hope the seller is in good health... and congrats to whoever got it...

Re: Flying Phantom for sale - 04/06/15 03:13 PM

Sure would be a fun ride but I would think it kind of a pain in the butt to deal with the lifting foils in an event like the GT with surf launch and landings. Am I understanding correctly that they are not going to produce any more?

Yeah, not that kind of boat. You wouldn't want to hit the beach with the kite up and drive it to dry sand. You can still launch it from a beach, but unless you like damaging expensive foils, care should be taken.

Weeds in the GT would be a fricking nightmare with this boat.

I haven't heard that. They're basically just getting going on production. I think they are behind on completing orders, but that's to be expected with a new product, and being flush with orders at the start.

Re: Flying Phantom for sale - 04/06/15 04:13 PM

I think it finally hit me yesterday that "life change" would likely have meant "divorce and b*tch took all my money"

Very sad, but hopefully the new owner may take the seller for a ride?

Either that or a serious illness.

That's the first thing I thought.

The new owner owes me a ride on that boat.

I'm hoping like hell someone in CRAW bought it, but I doubt it.

Re: Flying Phantom for sale - 04/08/15 09:07 PM

The Boat is in Texas, or was sold to someone in Texas. Mast had to be shipped from Artemis Racing in Alameda. I had to package the mast for the new owner prior to shipping.

Got a great tour of the Facility there. Got to inspect an AC-45T see all the wings and the whole compound. Big Blue is still there too.

Re: Flying Phantom for sale - 04/08/15 09:09 PM

Big Blue... What do you do with a $100million boat that sailed something like 6 races? Not like you can ship it to St. Martin and have the tourists take it for a joy ride.

Costs more to move everything than to keep paying the rent.

R.E. the Flying Phantom, here's a video I just found from about 3 weeks ago, of a Phantom putting the hurt on a Nacra F20:

Not only were they faster but it looked like they were pointing higher as well.

I wouldn't use that to compare pointing angle...the Nacra20 looks pretty badly trimmed for most of that video - the Nacra main is carrying a good deal of twist and even luffs at one point. It's possible that they were overpowered or maybe footing to try and achieve a more stable flight.

Behind these exiting vid, you find several others like the one below:

You see two super-enthousiastic Dutch friends buying a Flying Phantom and testing it for the first time.
Look at their gleaming eyes. It's a marvellous boys-with-new-toys happening.

And it's step-up and go. No problem in flying for the first time. Is it that easy?

But I still wonder where in Holland you can sail with such a cat.... IJsselmeer?

Re: Flying Phantom for sale - 04/09/15 09:59 PM

I love the Zebra boat, but how did they get the stripes onto the sails, without adding a whole bunch of extra plastic up there?
Posted By: bacho

Re: Flying Phantom for sale - 04/09/15 10:32 PM

Its not THAT heavy, I would sacrifice some weight for the zebra look.

It's probably less than 2 lbs for the sail assuming they did it in vinyl. Applying it like that, well....that's another question entirely. I pity the fool.

Added weight takes a pretty good justification, looking cool ain't it

Congrats to the new owner it looks nice foiling in the Texas waters. Glad your shipment arrived intact from California.

Karl,
It was in Madison?
Whose boat?

Re: Flying Phantom for sale - 04/18/15 04:30 PM

I don't know the person. Mr. Hearn knew him somehow. Looks like Tomko is the lucky new owner. I'm disappointed someone in CRAW didn't buy it, I wanted a ride on it.

Wow, Looks great.
I've sailed there in the past as much or even more than John has- Galveston Bay.

Looks very stable-
Now the real question is:

Will he put it in the GT300 in June?
I'm thinking probably not, but who knows?
John?

He's reportedly bringing it to this year's Florida 300 and has stated that the Texas 300 is unlikely due to weeds.

I have it on good authority that the only way to clear fouled blades is the back the boat down - on the N20FCS anyways. I was told "it doesn't really matter, when you're miles ahead, you can stop for a minute and back down to get rid of the weeds"
